Complex for seniors gets $25k
• Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A NEW residential complex
for over 65-year-olds, single or
widowed in the community, is
now one step closer to opening
in Leeston.
The Ellesmere Vintage Club
has presented a $25,000 cheque
towards completing the Abbeyfield
Ellesmere complex.
A tractor raffle and vintage
fair fundraiser, which showcased
more than 100 vintage
and classic tractors dating from
the early 1900s, was held earlier
this year. It was organised by
the club to help raise funds for
the home.
After eight years of planning
by local volunteers, construction
of the Flannery St complex
began last year.
The complex will be the first
of its kind to be built in Selwyn
and is expected to be completed
in October or November.
The overall cost of the complex
is to be $2.5 million and
the committee has raised $2.1
million.
“Our current target for fundraising
is a further $400,000
and this generous donation
of $25,000 goes a long way in
getting us closer to our target,”
committee chairman Bruce
GENEROUS: The Ellesmere Vintage Club with a $25,000 cheque they raised for the Abbeyfield
Ellesmere committee.
ON THE WAY: Construction on a new residential complex
in Leeston is under way with the building expected to open
later this year.
Cochrane said.
Residents living in the house,
owned by The Vintage Village
Trust, will be given weekly
rental to cover meals, rates,
insurance and power.
Members of the community
considering applying for the
complex are required to be able
to care for their personal needs
independently.
Mr Cochrane said he would
like to thank Ellesmere Vintage
Club chairman Stu Donald
and his committee along with
Southbridge-based Palmers
Transport founders Brian and
Averil Palmer for donating their
Massey Harris Pony tractor for
the raffle.
Cochrane on 027 432 9378 or
Countless young people were affected
by the sudden and dramatic
change to their sporting landscape
– with facilities lost and clubs presented
with the ultimate challenge.
From the start, Sport Canterbury
had a vision for the unique
secondary schools event.
“The event helped reach out
to those students who may not
participate in traditional sporting
codes,” Mr Falloon said.
Six years later, thanks to a
continuing partnership with UC
Education, the event has become
one of New Zealand’s most highly
anticipated events for secondary
school students.
Sport Canterbury Event coordinator
Isaac Sutherland said
Darfield is one of the events greatest
supporters.
He said from the beginning of
the events, Darfield High School
has been on board – 100 per cent.
Darfield High School sports coordinator
Karen Armstrong said
there are many reasons the event
has inspired their students.
“Our year 11 physical education
class has been encouraged to compete
as part of their course . . . plus
this year, the year 7 and 8 students
are getting involved,” she said.
