16 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi ews Man assaulted at boy racer meet needs surgery • By Andrew King Thursday July 20 2017 A MAN needs a steel plate put in his head after he was assaulted at a boy racer meet near McLean’s Island on Sunday morning. He and his cousin, who is 23 weeks pregnant, had gone to find some friends at about 3am on Pound Rd, but when they arrived they were immediately involved in an altercation. A family member of the assaulted man told The Star that he was attacked by an offender wearing “knuckle dusters” who also smashed out windows in his cousin’s car. He and his cousin had driven in separate vehicles to the meet. She fled and hid in her vehicle when the assault took place. The victim’s eye socket is so badly damaged, he needs surgery to put a steel plate in. “They will never go cruising again. I hope my nephew will be okay,” the family member said. Police have confirmed they have received a complaint about the assault and are following “strong lines of inquiry”. Sir Graham linked to another trophy HE COACHED the All Blacks to their second World Cup victory, and now a trophy in his name will be up for grabs at next year’s Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival. The Sir Graham Henry Trophy will be contested in the newlycreated president’s grade division of the festival. The festival will be held in Christchurch in April, as part of the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018. Event organiser Peter McDermott said it was appropriate one of New Zealand’s legendary rugby names will be on the trophy awarded to the winner of the new division. “Rugby was the first ever Golden Oldies sport dating back to 1979, and we are excited to be able to now cater for players who want to add a competitive element on-field while still enjoying the off-field social aspect, which is what Golden Oldies sport is all about.” Sir Graham said Golden Oldies rugby brought likeminded people together to share a sense of camaraderie with fellow rugby players from around the world. He said it was an honour to have his name on a trophy that represents those old traditions. “For me personally, it is also an honour to have the trophy awarded for the first time in my hometown where my rugby playing days began as a schoolboy.” The new president’s grade division will be played under the full World Rugby laws and is expected to attract a new group of players to the popular Golden Oldies rugby programme. Rugby is expected to be the largest sport at next year’s event with more than 110 teams entered so far from across the world. The Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival will be played from April 22-29 at Hagley Park. It is one of 10 sports which make up the month-long Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018. The event is expected to bring about 10,000 people to the city.
