crashes
After Mrs Imrie’s death, Dr
Latham met with city council
staff and police, and sought
urgent action on both sites.
While he was pleased to
hear measures were being put
in place, Dr
Latham was
disappointed
at the lack of
communication
from the
city council.
Dr Latham
was unaware
of the plans
to install a Darrell
new section of Latham
barrier south of the bend.
“It would have been good
if the community board
was updated and advised
accordingly. We haven’t had
an update regarding the latest
measures and that would have
been nice.”
Aaron Haymes, city council
transport operations manager,
said the barriers will be in place
by February 2018.
“We will then consider
continuing the (southern
barrier) a further 160m, which
will require additional approval
and funding,” he said.
LUCKY: The aftermath of Sunday’s serious crash on the Christchurch Akaroa Rd.
Pair lucky to survive horror smash
• By Andrew King
TWO PEOPLE are lucky to be
alive after a horror smash saw
their vehicle leave the road and
end up in a nearby property
early on Sunday.
The vehicle the man and
woman were in smashed
through a wooden power pole
and a tree before flying over a
2m wall, narrowly missing a
house in Robinsons Bay about
midnight.
Residents who heard the crash
raced to the scene and found
the vehicle in a neighbouring
property after leaving the
Christchurch Akaroa Rd.
Akaroa Senior Constable
Anita Osborne said she could
not believe how lucky the two
occupants were when she first
arrived.
“If you looked at the scene you
wouldn’t think anyone could
have survived,” she said.
Emergency services arrived
and firefighters cut free a
27-year-old woman who was
then airlifted to Christchurch
Hospital with head injuries.
The driver, who suffered a
broken back and ribs, was taken
to hospital by ambulance.
The power pole was snapped
off at the base and found in the
paddock a number of metres
away, while debris from the
tree was littered around the
property – there was a big piece
of wood protruding from the
windscreen.
The woman involved in
the crash said she could not
remember anything about
the crash or the ride in the
helicopter.
That was probably a good
thing, she said.
Trampoline
stolen to
‘feed kids’
• By Andrew King
A MAN was caught allegedly
stealing a trampoline in Halswell
to sell for scrap metal to feed his
children.
The 26-year-old appeared in the
district court yesterday charged
with burglary and was remanded
on bail to reappear on August 10.
Senior Sergeant Stephan
McDaniel said when questioned
by police the man said he was
“grabbing it [the trampoline] for
scrap metal to feed his kids”.
It’s alleged the offender was
seen at a property on Cashmere
Rd at about 2pm on Tuesday by
Community Watch Christchurch
South as they went past to patrol a
nearby subdivision.
When the patrol came back the
owner of the property was speaking
with the man so they pulled
over behind his vehicle.
He had the deconstructed
trampoline and other items in the
back of his vehicle.
Police were called to the scene
and the 26-year-old was arrested
for the alleged burglary.
Senior Sergeant McDaniel
said it was a good catch for the
community patrol.
