Progress on ‘dirty 30’
• By Bridget Rutherford
THEY’RE DIRTY and derelict
– and now there’s no longer 30
of them.
Progress on the city’s “dirty
30” list has been made, with
eight buildings under “active
improvement”.
In May, the city council came
up with a three-step approach
to deal with derelict buildings,
and put together a list of those
hampering the central city’s
regeneration.
It included 30 buildings, plus
the adjoined Duncan’s Buildings
from 129-167 High St.
Since then, the former Trinity
Congregational Church and
Shands Emporium have been
removed because they were being
actively restored.
Eight of the buildings on
the list are now actively being
worked on, and the city council
has had “positive dialogue” with
owners of another eight of the
buildings, who have given their
commitment to action.
The other 19 buildings,
including the Christ Church
Cathedral, remained problem
sites.
City councillor Jamie Gough
said they were happy with the
building on High St (above) and Victoria St’s former Spagalimis
building (right) are both now under “active improvement”.
progress, but it was just the
start.
He said the next step was
to expand the approach to
include derelict residential
buildings between the
four avenues to get more
people moving back into
the central city.
Eventually they would tackle
derelict buildings in the suburbs,
he said.
The new list shows those
under active improvement
Jamie Gough
included the former
Scorpio Books building
on Hereford St, former
Work and Income building
on High St, Lichfield St’s
Lincoln House, the Public
Trust Building, the old
Spagalimis on Victoria St,
and buildings on High St and
Armagh St.
There had been positive
dialogue or commitment to
action about the former IRD
building, two of the Sol Square
buildings, Peterborough
Apartments, Victoria Mansions,
some of the Duncan’s Buildings,
a partially empty site on High St
and Harley Chambers.
It was announced last week
Harley Chambers, on the
corner of Worcester Blvd and
Cambridge Tce, would be
replaced by a six-star hotel.
The 19 buildings that
remained problem sites
included the former PWC
building on Armagh St, the
Old Post Office in Cathedral
Sq, the city council’s Our City
building, some of High St’s
Duncan’s Buildings and the
former 2 Fat Indians building
on Manchester St.
Cr Gough said while some
building owners had been
helpful, others had made no
attempt to fix their sites.
“We’ve given them a kick but
now we need to put steel caps on.”
