Not a strong word written, let alone a murmur on the airwaves, or even a squeak on social media. After last week’s Treasury report slamming our Canterbury District Heath Board, not one local National Party member of parliament has stood up to defend them or the remarkable men and women who are struggling to meet our health needs in the region. Senior Canterbury doctors have labelled the report a “Pearl Harbour-style attack”, David Clark, Labour’s health spokesman has called it a “hatchet job”. All we have seen from Government-elected members is a failure to stand up for us. It is a failure of leadership. The report claimed that the CDHB was using tactics to leverage more public funds. It completely ignored the reality of the ongoing health fallouts from the Canterbury earthquakes and the lack of funding to support their population. The National Government has treated our health system as if it was business as usual when it SINCE THE first big quake in 2010, the Government has invested more than $14 billion in the rebuild and recovery of Christchurch and greater Canterbury. Today, Canterbury’s population has topped its pre-earthquake numbers, the economy is growing faster than in many other parts of the country and its unemployment rate is below the national average. Even so, we still have work to do to ensure we continue to grow and thrive. That’s why, late last month, the Government launched an action plan to drive economic growth. comes to funding, when we can all plainly see around us that, when it comes to health, it is far from business as usual down here. Our pleas to Wellington have been ignored. The Ministry of Health simply will not listen. And Nicky Wagner, as minister supporting greater Christchurch regeneration and associate minister of health, has failed to make our case. Rather than silence, the minister should have been shouting from the rooftops about our un-met health needs and the need for assistance. I think the CDHB has been a star performer over the last seven years. Dedicated and exceptional men and women have continued to care for us through the most trying of conditions.
