PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER New vehicles boost for air rescue trust • By Sarla Donovan CANTERBURY West Coast Air Rescue Trust has just had its three busiest days on record, attending 22 missions from Friday to Sunday. To put that in perspective, crews would normally cover six to nine incidents over a three-day period. Chief executive Christine Prince said spikes generally came from a combination of ski jobs and weatherrelated road conditions such as heavy rain or ice, leading to more vehicle accidents. So it was excellent timing for local car dealership Miles Toyota to gift two new vehicles to the air rescue trust yesterday. Miles Toyota chief executive Andre Heyns said the trust provided a critical service and when it approached him for assistance, he saw a “valuable opportunity” to partner with another Canterbury institution. “We’re communitybased and focused so it was an easy decision from out point of view.” Intensive care paramedic and winch operator Mike McLintock takes it all in his stride. “Winter is a busy time for us, what with the skifields and our other normal work. We were down in Timaru twice on Sunday, with one job coming in from Fox Peak skifield. Yesterday we were up at Mt Hutt for two back injury patients.” There was a corresponding increase in paperwork which people didn’t see, Mr McLintock said. “We do have a great group of people here though,” he adds, including three full-time staff who are based at the headquarters 24/7. The cars would be used as general support vehicles for events and fundraising. In Mr McLintock’s 14 years with the service he had seen a huge increase in the number of jobs they perform each year. “We now do over 700 a year, up from 300 when I first started.” The trust has to fundraise $7 million annually on top of what it receives from the Government to provide the services.
