Most dangerous intersections named<br />

CHRISTCHURCH<br />
intersections are among<br />
the most dangerous in New<br />
Zealand.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Memorial Ave roundabout<br />
near the airport was<br />
named fourth highest-risk in<br />
the country, one of 12 intersections<br />
in Christchurch and<br />
Selwyn on the year’s NZ Transport<br />
Agency top-100 list.<br />
<strong>The</strong> intersection is currently<br />
being upgraded from a roundabout<br />
to an overpass, in an effort<br />
to make it safer.<br />
Also named on the list were<br />
three different intersections<br />
along Marshland Rd, two<br />
on Riccarton Rd and two on<br />
Shands Rd.<br />
CHANGES: <strong>The</strong> intersection<br />
of Memorial Ave and<br />
Russley Rd, which was<br />
named fourth most<br />
dangerous in the country, is<br />
currently being upgraded<br />
to make it safer.<br />
<strong>The</strong> list, released by the<br />
NZTA this week, uses data<br />
from crashes between 2006 and<br />
last year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> intersections are ranked<br />
based on the number of fatal<br />
crashes, and crashes which<br />
leave people injured.<br />
NZTA road safety manager<br />
Bruce Richards said the list<br />
would be used to prioritise<br />
which intersections should be<br />
upgraded.<br />
People were injured in 30<br />
crashes at the Memorial Ave<br />
roundabout over the past 10<br />
years, including four crashes<br />
classified as serious.<br />
Mr Richards believed<br />
that would change once the<br />
intersection was upgraded,<br />
which is being done as part of<br />
the $112 million Russley Rd<br />
upgrade.<br />
On Marshland Rd, the<br />
intersection with Prestons Rd<br />
has been upgraded, but there<br />
are no plans to change the<br />
intersections with Hawkins Rd<br />
and Shirley Rd, which ranked<br />
43rd and 73rd on the list.<br />
Mr Richards said work on<br />
those roads would be considered,<br />
but it was made more<br />
complicated because work on<br />
the Northern Arterial Extension<br />
could change how much<br />
traffic there was on the roads.<br />
