Is high school really so scary??<br />

it can be a big<br />

transition for many<br />

students entering<br />

high school as a<br />

new Year 9.<br />

We asked four new<br />

students how they<br />

felt about coming<br />

to Mairehau high<br />

School and how<br />

their first two<br />

weeks have been.<br />

Jodie has come to<br />

us from Shirley intermediate. Jodie has an older sister here but she said she was really<br />

nervous because she didn’t know if her friends would still want to hang out with her.<br />

however her fears disappeared on the first day. Jodie said Mairehau was always her<br />

first choice of school and never thought about going anywhere else.<br />

Devin attended chisnallwood intermediate before coming to Mairehau high School.<br />

he said he was very nervous but not too bad. Devin looked at three other schools<br />

before choosing Mairehau. it was going to be four schools but two of them had open<br />

Nights at the same time. We are very pleased to have you here at Mairehau high<br />

School Devin.<br />

antionette also attended Shirley intermediate. She said she was really nervous with<br />

lots of fears about being lost and bullies. antionette said she must have watched<br />

far too many high school movies that had bullying in them as she hasn’t seen any<br />

bullying and she hasn’t got lost!<br />

Tamati joins us from Mairehau Primary. he said there was a mixture of nervousness<br />

and excitement, also looking forward to something different. its good so far! however,<br />

he has only just learned where the canteen is! We hope you brought lunch from home<br />

Tamati???<br />

all four students said their time here has been good and not as scary as they had first<br />

thought.<br />

When asked if they were all happy, a definite ‘YeS’ was the answer.<br />

<strong>20</strong>18 Student Leaders<br />

our Senior Student leaders were introduced to our students recently.<br />

This year we have 12 Student leaders, all of whom have an important role within our<br />

school.<br />

<strong>20</strong>17 Celebration of Junior Students<br />

Wednesday 13 December was our last day of the <strong>20</strong>17 school year and a<br />

celebration of our junior student successes.<br />

each year one student from each junior level, Year 9 and Year 10, are chosen for<br />

a good citizenship award. These are students who have worked hard to achieve<br />

their potential whilst also respecting the needs of others.<br />

Anna Prior<br />

The Year 9 recipient of The Mackenzie award, was anna Prior.<br />

anna came to us from rawhiti School and is described as an<br />

able and enthusiastic student with excellent understanding.<br />

She is diligent and independent and makes a great effort<br />

to complete her work. She is intelligent, attentive, mature<br />

and inquisitive. Being socially conscious, she is a member of<br />

the student council, part of the gaTe (gifted and Talented<br />

programme) and works in the school canteen. anna<br />

enthusiastically takes on opportunities to serve her school.<br />

The Year 10 recipient of the Dave Diggs award, was hanna<br />

chandra.<br />

hanna joined our school at the start of <strong>20</strong>17. hanna’s long<br />

list of qualities place her in good stead as a future leader<br />

of our school. She is described as having a strong work<br />

ethic with focus, a sense of humour, mature and polite.<br />

hanna shows leadership qualities when working in a<br />

team, has a good understanding of concepts and skills<br />

taught, is ever-helpful, and interested in her learning. She<br />

has a willingness to express her ideas and to ask challenging questions.<br />

We also celebrated many students’ academic, sporting and cultural<br />

achievements. Here are our top academic junior students for <strong>20</strong>17:<br />

Michael Scanlan received Top academic Student<br />

award for Year 9. Michael joined us from chisnallwood<br />

intermediate.<br />

Staff have described Michael as a focused, conscientious<br />

and talented student. he completes all tasks to a very<br />

high standard while at the same time is happy to help<br />

others. he is an extremely capable student and has an<br />

Michael Scanlan excellent work ethic. Michael enjoys learning and likes to<br />

challenge ideas. For the university of otago Mathematics<br />

competition, Michael was top student in our school for all students from Year 9<br />

through to Year 11. Michael is part of our gaTe (gifted and Talented programme)<br />

Michael received a Year 9 excellence award in the following subjects: Social<br />

Studies, Science, english, Mathematics and Statisics – 1st place<br />

ella Peoples received Top academic Student award for Year<br />

10. ella joined us from chisnallwood intermediate at the<br />

beginning of <strong>20</strong>16.<br />

ella is an exceptional musician and is working at excellence<br />

level in all areas of Music. She is a member of the Jazz Band,<br />

choir, concert Band, Junior Band, Junior choir and also has<br />

her own band which performed at Smokefree rockQuest<br />

<strong>20</strong>17.<br />

Ella Peoples<br />

ella has been described as a vibrant and engaging student<br />

with relentless positive energy. She is an intelligent and engaging student who<br />

demonstrates a talent in drama and leadership skills in class.<br />

ella received outstanding results for her school work across all subjects and<br />

is working well above the expected academic level for her age. She is a keen<br />

debater, motivates her fellow students and actively participates in all areas<br />

of school life. ella has already achieved Ncea level 1 credits with a Merit<br />

endorsement.<br />

ella received a Year 10 excellence award in the following subjects:<br />

Mathematics, health, Music, Science, Social Studies, english.<br />
