10 Tuesday February 20 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi PEGASUS POST Mairehau high School Encouraging ExcEllEncE in our community The Principal’s Desk i would like to acknowledge and welcome all the new families and many cultures that make up the Mairehau high School community in 2018. in particular, welcome to our Year 9, international, and other new students to all year levels, as well as new teachers and staff of Mairehau high School. Harry romana, Principal We have many cultures represented on the Mairehau high School roll. i am proud to lead a place of learning and creativity with such a rich and storied past. Mairehau high School was opened in 1961, the name of our school taken from the daughter of Marshlands landowner and benefactor, arthur gravenor rhodes. The school was initially named christchurch North hS. in Maori, Mairehau is a shrub prized for the fragrance of its flowers, the aroma of the Maori mist maiden. our motto, “Mairetia i te Matauranga” means “Fragrance with Wisdom”. our school is charged with the responsibility of making a difference for all students: • To prepare our young people for the future • To nurture all students to become decent, worthwhile citizens of the world. • To provide opportunities for all our students to learn and succeed as we enter into the 2018 academic school year, i wanted to share with the community “our Story”. During 2017, a group of students and teachers prepared the following illustration. We call it, “our Story” as it represents a student’s journey through our school, a journey in life. our story begins with you - if you can just imagine being a member of a group of keen, enthusiastic, passionate and committed people on a Waka (canoe) rowing towards a prosperous future. You are one amongst other students proud of your culture, proud of who you are, knowing yourself, having an identity, being a student of Mairehau high School. You are one of five students aboard the Waka , signifying the five-year levels in our school from Year 9- Year 13. There are boys and girls rowing with you, in unison, as one, sharing, collaborating and identifying as the coeducational school of your choice in our community. The Waka (canoe) is inscribed with the carving, depicting the word care, a word that has real meaning for all at Mairehau high School: challenge, achievement, responsibility and empathy: the Mairehau Way, our school values system, our expectations of you. This is the way we do things. on your Waka, you row as one, together, with dignity, with respect and with mana. With others, you row with purpose and meaning. You wear your Korowai (cloak) with pride a symbol of leadership and success. The Waka (canoe) carries “kete” or baskets of knowledge to guide and support you through school life, and to prepare you for your future. With the kete are scrolls depicting your maps to learning, to creating and to sharing. in our future with head, hands and heart, the words learn, create and Share will be embedded in the way that we teach. The Waka itself is protected by four guardians that symbolise each of our school houses: • The stern eyes of the yellow (Kowhai) Tuatara watching your every move, he basks on a rock, in the warm sun- Tau ihu (the bow of the waka) • The exclusive red (Whero) Pekapeka or Short-tailed NZ bat- Tau rapa (the stern of the waka) • Your Waka is guided through the Tai rawhiti (east coast) straights by Maui our NZ native dolphin- Waka Katea (Starboard- kahurangi or blue) • The mighty Karearea (Falcon) flying high above the mountains of our majestic Southern alps- Waka ama (Port, Kakariki green). in the foreground, the Mairehau flower wafts its beautiful fragrance upon the Southern winds. Mairehau our community and school name. This is who we are. on the shore, always caring and ever watchful are your teachers, parents and whānau watching every paddle stroke of the waka. Te Taki autahi/ The Southern cross constellation and Te Tiritiri o te Moana (The Southern alps) locates our students, waka and school to the canterbury region. You know who you are, and where you come from. “our Story” is “Your Story”. let us begin our journey, together. There is a subtle change from Te Po (night sky) to Te ata (the morning star) (Your future) So, i trust, when you walk through the gates of our school, and when you board your waka when you decide on your journey and learn in our computer suites and our classrooms, sharing “our Story and Your Journey”. Know that they lead to the treasures of opportunity. We expect our students to do well, to be successful and to be young people who contribute positively to our community. Mairehau high School prepares students for school success and more importantly, Mairehau high School prepares students for success in life. We cannot expect to rise any higher than the standards of excellence that we set within Mairehau high School. We have expectations of achievement, success, excellence and quality. We asked four new students how they felt about coming to Mairehau high School and how their first two weeks have been. Jodie has come to us from Shirley intermediate. Jodie has an older sister here but she said she was really nervous because she didn’t know if her friends would still want to hang out with her. however her fears disappeared on the first day. Jodie said Mairehau was always her first choice of school and never thought about going anywhere else. Devin attended chisnallwood intermediate before coming to Mairehau high School. he said he was very nervous but not too bad. Devin looked at three other schools before choosing Mairehau. it was going to be four schools but two of them had open Nights at the same time. We are very pleased to have you here at Mairehau high School Devin. antionette also attended Shirley intermediate. She said she was really nervous with lots of fears about being lost and bullies. antionette said she must have watched far too many high school movies that had bullying in them as she hasn’t seen any bullying and she hasn’t got lost! Tamati joins us from Mairehau Primary. he said there was a mixture of nervousness and excitement, also looking forward to something different. its good so far! however, he has only just learned where the canteen is! We hope you brought lunch from home Tamati??? all four students said their time here has been good and not as scary as they had first thought. When asked if they were all happy, a definite ‘YeS’ was the answer. Jodie, Antoinette, Devin, Tamati 2018 Student Leaders our Senior Student leaders were introduced to our students recently. This year we have 12 Student leaders, all of whom have an important role within our school. Head Girl: Phoebe Pratt Head Boy: Niko Smith Academic Student Leader: Kerry Fairbrass Cultural Student Leaders: Jade Komene, Jakob callender Community Student Leaders: Tayla Prouting, ashlee clark-Nevard Sport Student Leaders: anysha Te Moana, hamish Wolfrey Waka (House) Student Leader: cassidy Kerr Marketing Student Leader: Tarryn Wilson Peer Support Student Leader: erin rosser Jade, Tarryn, Jakob, Tayla, hamish, ashlee, Pheobe, Niko, anysha, Kerry, cassidy, erin 2017 Celebration of Junior Students Wednesday 13 December was our last day of the 2017 school year and a celebration of our junior student successes. each year one student from each junior level, Year 9 and Year 10, are chosen for a good citizenship award. These are students who have worked hard to achieve their potential whilst also respecting the needs of others. Anna Prior The Year 9 recipient of The Mackenzie award, was anna Prior. anna came to us from rawhiti School and is described as an able and enthusiastic student with excellent understanding. She is diligent and independent and makes a great effort to complete her work. She is intelligent, attentive, mature and inquisitive. Being socially conscious, she is a member of the student council, part of the gaTe (gifted and Talented programme) and works in the school canteen. anna enthusiastically takes on opportunities to serve her school. The Year 10 recipient of the Dave Diggs award, was hanna chandra. hanna joined our school at the start of 2017. hanna’s long list of qualities place her in good stead as a future leader of our school. She is described as having a strong work ethic with focus, a sense of humour, mature and polite. hanna shows leadership qualities when working in a team, has a good understanding of concepts and skills Hanna Chandra taught, is ever-helpful, and interested in her learning. She has a willingness to express her ideas and to ask challenging questions. We also celebrated many students’ academic, sporting and cultural achievements. Here are our top academic junior students for 2017: Michael Scanlan received Top academic Student award for Year 9. Michael joined us from chisnallwood intermediate. Staff have described Michael as a focused, conscientious and talented student. he completes all tasks to a very high standard while at the same time is happy to help others. he is an extremely capable student and has an Michael Scanlan excellent work ethic. Michael enjoys learning and likes to challenge ideas. For the university of otago Mathematics competition, Michael was top student in our school for all students from Year 9 through to Year 11. Michael is part of our gaTe (gifted and Talented programme) Michael received a Year 9 excellence award in the following subjects: Social Studies, Science, english, Mathematics and Statisics – 1st place ella Peoples received Top academic Student award for Year 10. ella joined us from chisnallwood intermediate at the beginning of 2016. ella is an exceptional musician and is working at excellence level in all areas of Music. She is a member of the Jazz Band, choir, concert Band, Junior Band, Junior choir and also has her own band which performed at Smokefree rockQuest 2017. Ella Peoples ella has been described as a vibrant and engaging student with relentless positive energy. She is an intelligent and engaging student who demonstrates a talent in drama and leadership skills in class. ella received outstanding results for her school work across all subjects and is working well above the expected academic level for her age. She is a keen debater, motivates her fellow students and actively participates in all areas of school life. ella has already achieved Ncea level 1 credits with a Merit endorsement. ella received a Year 10 excellence award in the following subjects: Mathematics, health, Music, Science, Social Studies, english.
