Pensioner tricked; house burgled
• By Sophie Cornish
AN ELDERLY woman was
tricked into handing over the
keys to a campervan, which
was then used in a burglary to
“completely clear out” a North
New Brighton home.
Ina Livingston, 89, felt something
was not right when a man
in his 20s persuaded her to give
him the keys to her daughter and
son-in-law’s campervan.
Mrs Livingston was told by the
man, who knocked on her door,
that her son-in-law, Peter, said he
could borrow the campervan.
She turned him away but he
persisted, coming back a second
time to say he had just been on
the phone with Peter who said he
could take the campervan.
Mrs Livingston and her
daughter Leslie are unsure how
the man knew Peter’s name.
Within two hours of the
campervan being stolen, it was
used in a burglary of a house
in Royalist Ave, North New
Brighton.
Homeowner Shane Aitcheson
said the burglars took everything
they could from the house. They
were there for about 40min
“The whole place was a rubbish
tip, they had not left one thing
unturned or looked at. They had
gone through the fridge, freezer,
the pantry; they had taken the
dirty washing. They took everything.”
He believes belongings to the
value of $20,000 were taken, including
snowboard and surfing
equipment, power tools and all
of their clothing.
“Imagine you don’t have any
more clothes,” said Mr Aitcheson.
of properties all over Christchurch.
A neighbour witnessed the
campervan entering the property
and another neighbour caught
it on their security camera.
To make matters worse, Mr
Aitcheson and his partner are
now in a dispute with their
insurance company. They are not
likely to receive contents insurance,
in spite of initially being
told they were covered.
STOLEN: Leslie and her
husband Peter with their
campervan which was stolen
after Leslie’s elderly mother
was tricked into handing
over the keys. It was then
caught on a security camera
in Royalist Ave prior to a
burglary.
They are now seeking legal
advice.
Police have taken fingerprints
and said there had been no
confirmed sightings of the
campervan yet.
There is no connection
between the Mrs Livingston and
Mr Aitcheson.
Leslie said the campervan,
named Lucy, was “like a moving
bach” to her and her husband.
“We’re really attached to it
. . . we go away in it all the time,
it was stocked with food, dishes,
bedding, our tramping boots,
books.”
Teens steal
Parkview
School
laptops
• By Sophie Cornish
TWO TEENAGERS walked into
Parkview School and stole 11
laptops only 20min after the final
bell had rung.
The pair were identified by
the school’s CCTV footage and
police said they had been referred
to Youth Aid.
The theft took place on
February 9. It is another incident
in spate of thefts at schools in the
eastern suburbs.
Principal Simon Thomas
said the school community was
devastated.
“Those were learning devices
for our students . . . we will get
new ones as a result through
insurance, but it’s just that sense
of being intruded on.”
On the same day, a blue
cage trailer was stolen from
Queenspark Primary School.
A school spokesman said the
theft was disappointing.
In October, 20 outdoor
speakers were stolen from St
Albans School and seven from
Rawhiti School.
