36 A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK Chris Fraser The Book Nook — “A Lending Library” We are open Monday to Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm * * * * I have a really good book to tell you about, “The Mountain Between Us” by Charles Martin. Ben Payne is a surgeon and is anxious to return home and Ashley Knox is trying to get home for her wedding. Bad weather cancels all flights but Ben decides to charter a plane and try to beat the storm before it hits Salt Lake City. He finds Ashley, who he had been talking to while waiting in the terminal, and invites her to join him on this charter flight. The pilot agrees to take them in his small plane, along with his dog, and they set off. Suddenly the plane plunges into Utah’s remote wilderness in the dead of winter. Ashley is badly injured and Ben also suffers from broken ribs but he struggles to get them out. They figure their pilot had a heart attack but somehow managed to get the plane down without killing them all. With no chance of anyone finding them in these mountains, Ben has to figure out how to get them down the mountain, keep them warm and find food. Fortunately, he and his wife Rachel enjoy hiking, so he has learned some useful skills on survival. He is unable to move Ashley with her broken leg so he figures out a way to build a sled and attach a harness to himself to pull her along. This story tells of the long days trying to move down the mountain, and the problems they have to face. With Ben’s determination to just put one foot in front of the other for as long as he can until they find help, and the humour they sometimes manage, many days go by with little or no food and several miles of walking in deep snow. This is a book you simply want to keep on reading, and is now a major motion picture. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy reading! My Garden in January and June by Sylvia Grant My Ontario garden is not static. It goes through extreme changes from the snow, the ice and the freezing temperatures of January to the heat and humidity of June. These seasonal changes create a number of differences not only in temperature but in plant life, colours, precipitation, wildlife and the mood of the garden. In January, my flower beds are covered with a thick blanket of snow. The only sign of the perennials that lie beneath are some dry brown stalks and seed heads from last summer’s phlox, Siberian iris and sedum. The stalks rustle in the north wind and catch snow on and around them while the crowns of the plants sleep peacefully below. Evergreen trees and shrubs provide a green backdrop to the snow-covered flower gardens and lawn. Deciduous trees and shrubs reach out their bare brown branches providing perches for blue jays and cardinals. The jays and cardinals add flashes of bright blue and red to the January garden whose predominant colours are white, green and brown. The mood of the garden in January fluctuates. On stormy days with winds howling and snow swirling, it feels like the garden is hosting the very demons of hell. When the storm passes, and the winds die down and the sun shines again, the garden becomes a place of peace and serenity. The earth turns, the northern hemisphere warms up and by June, my garden has emerged from its ice age and presents a totally different picture. The perennials that slept beneath the snow have awakened and emerged from the earth and grown into tall plants. My waist-high peonies bend under the weight of ruffly pink, white and red flowers. Their perfume announces their presence. The Siberian irises hold their delicate blue flowers atop tall stately stems. Bearded iris, not to be outdone by the Siberians, unfold their much bigger blooms in shades of blues and purples. The sedum and the phlox are growing, but it will take until later in the season for them to reach full height and to flower. The deciduous trees and shrubs have sprouted green leaves and some are laden with flowers. In June, my lilac trees hang heavy with light purple, dark purple and white flowers. They fill the air with their sweet scent. Honeysuckles add their white and pink flowers to the colour pallet and blend their aroma with the lilacs. In June, birds have returned from their winter in the south. They join with the blue jays and cardinals in my garden where they sing and tweet and chirp as they build nests and prepare to raise families. The mood of my garden in June is not one of peace and serenity but a whirling sense-stimulating experience of colour, scents and sound. Sometimes when I look at my garden in January and then in June, the differences are so pronounced that it is difficult to believe that it is the same garden. The benefit of gardening in Ontario is that, with all the seasonal changes that one has to contend with, one never has to contend with boredom. 37 T S - M 2018
