Fire rages, homes at risk
to celebrate 150-year jubilee
“Before then you would tell
lots of people and they would say
“where is Broadfield School?”
Now you say it is where the
scarecrows are and they go “oh I
know”,” Miss McMillan said.
Broadfield was opened in 1868
and originally operated in the
Broadfield Methodist Church
before its first buildings were
built in 1870.
While the earliest roll of pupils
ranged from 50-60, the attendance
was a lot less and the ages
ranged from 4 to 18-years-old.
At this time schooling was not
free so a charge of £1 per annum
was made.
It was reported school was not
compulsory and not all children
attended due to difficulties in
paying.
The grounds of the original
school comprising of three acres
was purchased by the late Samuel
Early for £30.
The official opening for the
new school building was on
Wednesday, July 6, 1870.
The first teacher at the school
was 19-year-old George Cotton,
who served until 1872.
It was reported Mr Cotton
died about 1874 and about 250
adults and 50 children attended
his funeral.
The longest serving teacher at
the school is Linda Trolove, who
taught at the school from 1987,
until her retirement at the end of
2017.
While it now has a solid roll of
140 pupils, it has had a history of
fluctuating numbers.
In 1973 the roll dropped to
seven and there was talk of closing
the school but the moving
in of a family with two children
saved the school and it began to
increase.
Over the years the school has
had several extensions with the
most recent upgrade in 2016.
BIG PLANS: An artist impression of jubilee pavilion structure to
be installed over the school’s netball court area.
space plus an
administration area, principal’s
office, staff room and sick
bay.
The school’s original tennis
court area was removed but a
new court area was laid between
the field and playground.
