Debate on importance of soil

by radio personality Kim
Hill on the importance of
soil at Lincoln University
SOME SCIENTISTS state that
Britain may have as few as 60
harvests worth of usable soil left.
How many harvests do we
have left?
What does our soil need to
allow us to continue to grow
food?
Some countries have lost their
usable soil completely through
desertification.
Each year in June a planning
committee co-ordinated by the
Lincoln Envirotown Trust and
chaired by Dr Sue Jarvis starts
planning for the next hot topic
chaired by radio personality Kim
Hill.
The 2018 hot topic will be the
eighth, and as usual on a subject
of national and global environmental
significance – ‘Soil – are
we treating it like dirt?’
The planning starts with
choosing the topic.
This time it was quite easy
as last year’s topic was ‘Water

Lincoln Envirotown.
The events are always well
attended, with last year’s event
packed out with a number of
people listening to the discussion
from the foyer.
The choice of panellists is
always hard and takes quite a bit
of discussion to find four panellists
to cover all the aspects of
the topic.
This year’s panellists are Trish
Fraser, a local who works at
the Lincoln Plant and Food
Reserach; Ants Roberts, who
works for Ravensdown; Mike
Hedley from Massey University;
and Andy MacFarlane, farmer/
company director.
These panellists, who are
experts in their field, will discuss
a broad range of relevant issues:
Are we degrading our soil
cover? Is this most precious of
resources in any danger? How
important is the ecosystem of
the soil, how do we ensure the
production of safe, healthy food
and what may go wrong in terms
of such things as pollution and
erosion?
The audience can join in the
– a global issue affecting New
Zealand’ and as one of the panellists
said: “It is hard to separate
the role of water from the role of
soil – we should be talking about
soil too.”
Then we need to invite some
people to the planning committee
who are experts about the
topic.
For the 2018 event we have
members from AgResearch,
Plant and Food Research,
Canterbury University as well
as, of course Lincoln University,
who is hosting the event, and
discussion during question time.

22 at 6.30pm, Stewart Lecture
Theatre 1, Lincoln University.
A $5 koha is requested with
refreshments provided, along
with beer tasting from The
Laboratory Lincoln and a cash
