The Rising and the Hereafter

Allâhu ta’âlâ pities all the people on the earth, and sends them the useful things He creates. He has taught the entire humanity how they should act and behave so that they may lead a life of comfort and peace in the world and in the Hereafter. Choosing some of the people whose deserved destination in the Hereafter is Hell, He will magnanimously forgive them and bless them with Paradise....

Ano<strong>the</strong>r­person­was­seen­in­a­dream­<strong>and</strong>­was­asked,­“How­did<br />

Allâhu­ta’âlâ­behave­towards­you?”­<strong>The</strong>­dead­person­said,­“As­<strong>the</strong><br />

person­who­was­washing­me­turned­me­harshly­from­one­side­to<br />

<strong>the</strong>­o<strong>the</strong>r,­an­iron­nail­on­<strong>the</strong>­bench­scratched­my­body.­That­hurt<br />

me­very­badly.”­When­<strong>the</strong>­person­who­had­washed­<strong>the</strong>­corpse­was<br />

asked­about­it­<strong>the</strong>­following­morning,­he­said­that­it­was­true.­“It<br />

did­happen,­although­inadvertently,”­he­added.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r­one­was­seen­in­a­dream­<strong>and</strong>­was­asked,­“How­have<br />

you­been?­Didn’t­you­die­<strong>the</strong>­o<strong>the</strong>r­day?”­“Yes,­I­did,”­he­replied.<br />

“I­am­in­a­state­of­khayr,­(i.e.­I­am­well­off­here.’­However,­as­<strong>the</strong>y<br />

were­shovelling­earth­into­my­grave,­a­piece­of­stone­fell­on­my<br />

body­ <strong>and</strong>­ broke­ two­ of­ my­ bones.­ That­ gave­ me­ a­ lot­ of­ pain.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>reupon­<strong>the</strong>y­opened­his­grave­<strong>and</strong>­saw­that­it­was­as­he­had<br />

said.<br />

A­person­was­dreamed­of­by­his­son­<strong>and</strong>­said­to­his­son,­“O,<br />

you,­bad­son!­Put­things­right­in­daddy’s­grave!­For­<strong>the</strong>­rain­has<br />

caused­a­lot­of­trouble.”­<strong>The</strong>reupon­<strong>the</strong>y­opened­his­grave.­Indeed,<br />

it­was­like­an­irrigation­trench.­Flood­had­filled­it­up.<br />

An­A’rabî­(nomad­Arab)­relates:­When­I­asked­my­(dead)­son<br />

how­Allâhu­ta’âlâ­had­treated­him,­he­said,­“I­am­all­right.­Yet,<br />

because­ I­ was­ buried­ in­ a­ grave­ near­ that­ of­ a­ fâsiq­ person,­ my<br />

heart­feels­fear­because­of­<strong>the</strong>­torment­being­inflicted­on­him.”­As<br />

is­ clearly­ understood­ from­ <strong>the</strong>se­ stories­ <strong>and</strong>­ many­ ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

analogous­story­being­related,­dead­people­suffer­torment­in­<strong>the</strong>ir<br />

graves.­ For­ that­ matter,­ our­ blessed­ Prophet­ ‘sall-Allâhu­ ta’âlâ<br />

’alaihi­wa­sallam’­prohibited­to­break­<strong>the</strong>­bones­of­a­corpse­<strong>and</strong>,<br />

when­one­day­he­saw­someone­sitting­on­one­side­of­a­grave,­he<br />

said,­ “Don’t torment <strong>the</strong> dead in <strong>the</strong>ir graves”­ <strong>and</strong>­ “Just as <strong>the</strong><br />

living people sense <strong>and</strong> feel sorrows <strong>and</strong> pains in <strong>the</strong>ir homes,<br />

likewise <strong>the</strong> dead people sense <strong>and</strong> feel sorrows <strong>and</strong> pains in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

graves.”<br />

When­ our­ blessed­ Prophet­ ‘sall-Allâhu­ ’alaihi­ wa­ sallam’<br />

visited­<strong>the</strong>­grave­of­Hadrat­Âmina,­his­blessed­mo<strong>the</strong>r,­he­wept,<br />

<strong>and</strong>­so­did­<strong>the</strong>­people­with­him.­He­explained:­“I asked my Rabb<br />

(Allâhu­ ta’âlâ) for permission so that I could invoke Him for<br />

forgiveness on her behalf. He refused to give me permission to do<br />

so.”­<strong>The</strong>n­he­stated:­“When I invoked Him to give me permission<br />

to visit her grave, He gave me permission. <strong>The</strong>n, you, too, visit<br />

graves. For, such visits will cause you to remember death.”<br />

[Afterwards,­ Rasûlullah­ was­ given­ permission­ to­ invoke­ Allâhu<br />

ta’âlâ­ for­ forgiveness­ on­ behalf­ of­ his­ parents.­ <strong>The</strong>y­ had­ been<br />
