Another Selwyn athlete swims Taupo
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
WHEN ANGE Moir, 49,
first started swimming she
struggled to swim 250m in
45min.
Five years later and the Lincoln
swimmer has conquered
Lake Taupo – swimming a
mammoth 41.5km.
Moir is the second Selwyn
resident this year to swim the
FortyPointTwo Lake Taupo
Marathon Swim.
Starting at 3.11am, it took
the mother-of-two 15hr 38min
to cross the lake.
“I did it really to show to
myself and others you don’t
have to have a background of
swimming to be able to succeed
in something like this as
long as you get stuck in and
get the work done,” Moir said.
Having a steady stroke
count of 51 per minute, it is
estimated she did about 48,000
strokes.
Earlier this year, Rolleston
resident Hannah Drury was
the first swimmer of the year
to achieve the marathon swim.
Swimmers have been taking
on the challenge since 1955.
Moir never thought she
could swim far until she began
getting coaching from Fit and
Abel owner Dan Abel – who
Are you a new business or
Organisation in Selwyn?
You need to let people know
who you are, where you are and
how to find you.
her support crew, Philip Rush,
Dan Abel and Mike Cochrane.
(Right) – Moir swimming
alongside her support boat
on Lake Taupo.
has successfully swam across
Cook Strait 88 times.
She said to this day, she
believes she would still be
trying to swim 3km if it wasn’t
for Abel.
She spent three years
training for the swim at the
Waltham Swimming Pool,
Aqua Gym Indoor Swim Centre
and in open water.
Moir said a major part of
enduring the swim was maintaining
a positive attitude.
Her support crew on the
day included Abel, marathon
swimmer Mike Cochrane,
and current world recordholder
for the fastest two and
three-way swim of the English
Channel, Phillip Rush.
“You wouldn’t do these
swims if it weren’t for this
amazing crew. It just about
makes you want to cry when
you think about what they did
for you actually,” she said.
While she was allowed to
stop to eat and drink throughout
the swim, she would be
disqualified if she touched the
boat.
SELWYN TIMES
Moir’s husband Barry and
friend, Melissa Hempstalk,
were also on a large boat
which would cruise past
throughout the swim.
At the end of her swim,
Moir said she was determined
to “stand triumphant” and
have photos taken before it “all
turned to custard”.
“The thing I had been looking
forward to for 15 hours
was a meat-lover’s pizza,” she
said.
Her next goal is to swim the
Cook Strait.
