Fashion recap
AUTUMN/WINTER 2018
Here are some of our highlights from the
year in fashion, so far…
TIME FOR CHANGE
On January 1, 2018, following a string of
shocking headlines, Hollywood celebrities
decided that enough was enough and founded
‘Time’s up’, a movement against sexual
harassment and injustice.
Awards season has always been a platform
to promote fashion designers new and
old, however, this year, attendees used
the red carpet and their choice of attire to
communicate the movement’s key messages.
To show solidarity, females from the
entertainment industry wore all black to the
75th Annual Golden Globe awards, carried
white roses at the Grammys and attended the
BAFTAs not with partners or family members
but with prominent female activists.
So far the ‘Time’s up’ initiative has raised
more than $20 million for its defence fund as it
continues to gain serious momentum.
YEAR OF THE DOG
Man’s best friend is getting the fashion
treatment.
As a nod to the Chinese Year of
the Dog, a long list of brands including
Adidas, Vans, Gucci and Bape to name
but a few, have dedicated capsule
collections to our canine companions.
During Milan Fashion Week, models
including Gigi and Bella Hadid were
given a run for their money when
luxury leatherwear brand Tod’s sent
dogs down the catwalk.
In New Zealand, Karen Walker even
released a range of pet jewellery that
you can get your paws on now, with
prices starting from $50. To celebrate
the collection, Karen Walker hosted a
canine glamour shoot in Auckland with
proceeds being donated to the SPCA.
Barking mad but brilliant.
Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi,
75th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
A ROYAL FLUSH
Her Royal Majesty put her stamp on
London Fashion Week earlier this year.
The fashion elite, for whom the front
row is typically reserved, had to sit
closer to each other than usual at the
Richard Quinn show in London this
season due to a very special guest,
whose attendance was signified only by
the blue velvet cushion that was placed
on the f-row, moments before the
presentation.
Editor-in-chief of American Vogue,
Dame Anna Wintour, was the natural
choice of mentor for the Queen’s
inaugural Fashion Week appearance
and the two were pictured enjoying
both the show and one another’s
company. (Despite those sunglasses!)
As the show concluded, the Queen
ascended to present Mr Quinn with
the first Queen Elizabeth II Award for
British Design. A royal seal of approval
for the young graduate designer.
