POLICE CRIME PREVENTION
Like in any major metropolis, visitors should take
precautions to protect themselves from criminal
activity. Do not leave belongings unattended, or
leave valuables in your car, and keep an eye on
your bags. In case you do become a crime victim,
please report the incident to the nearest police
station as soon as possible, or go directly to
the nearest hotel, where the staff can help you
file a report promptly with the proper authorities
closest to the scene of the crime. Otherwise,
Budapest’s emergency phone numbers are 107
and 112, or log onto www.police.hu/brfk for a
complete list of police stations.
LOOKING AROUND
TALES OF ATA – page 6
NAVIGATING BUDAPEST
The city of Budapest clusters around the great Danube River, which
slices it in half on a curving north-south axis. The hilly west bank
is Buda, the flat east bank is Pest – two totally separate towns until
1873, when they were united to form today’s capital city. Modern
Budapest is divided into 23 districts (called “kerület”), each designated
by a Roman numeral. The two districts you will spend most
time in are Buda I (Castle Hill, Buda’s old medieval center) and Pest
V (downtown Pest, a robust, confident, turn-of-the-century area
containing the Parliament, banks and financial centers, as well as the
best shopping). See our detailed map on pages 38-39 for a reliable
city reference.
TOURIST INFO OFFICES Tourinform offices are
found around the city. The most useful is at
Deák Ferenc Square next to the McDonald’s.
Open daily 8am-8pm. Pest V, Sütő u. 2, T: (+36
1) 438 8080 Map D5. Another helpful office
is at Pest VI, Liszt Ferenc tér 11. Open daily
noon-8pm. T: (+36 1) 322 4098 Map E4. Tourist
information offices are also open daily at Budapest
Airport. At all of these locations you can
purchase the Budapest Card, which covers all
public transportation and provides discounted
access to major museums, spas, restaurants,
and attractions. www.budapestinfo.hu
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Budapest has an
extensive public transportation system with
buses, trams, trolleys, and four metro lines.
Most lines operate daily from 4am to about
midnight, trams 4 and 6 operate all night as
do several night buses. Tickets are available
at ticket machines (also English) and booths
(“pénztár”) in metro underpasses. To validate
a ticket (not necessary for daily, long-term
passes, or season tickets), insert it into the
orange or red boxes at the metro entrances, or
aboard buses and trams. Tickets are not always
checked on buses and trams, but ticket inspectors,
who identify themselves with armbands
or ID cards, may board the vehicles to check
that passengers have validated tickets. Fines
can be paid on the spot. See www.bkk.hu
for more details. There are single and section
tickets, as well as a discount book (10 single
tickets), a 24-hour or 72-hour card (valid on all
forms of public transportation), and seven-day
, two-week and one-month passes.
