PARLIAMENT This neo-gothic palace was built in 1896 for a country more than twice the current size and still ruled by counts, lords and princes. It is the most expensive building ever constructed in Hungary, decorated with lots of marble, 40 kilograms of gold leaf, as well as statues, paintings and other works by the best artists of the day. The central dome houses the crown of King Stephen. Pest V, Kossuth Lajos tér 1, Map D4, www.parliament.hu Where It’s At Budapest BUDAPEST ZOO The animals are a lot of fun but the zoo has some amazing architecture, too, such as the extraordinary entrance building and the Elephant House, both by Art Nouveau architect Károly Kós. There are also a folk-style bird house, a glass-walled greenhouse with tropical plants and trees, an amusement park, botanical garden, and a huge playground for the children. It is where Budapest was born. where emperor Franz Joseph’s coronation banquette was held in 1867, and where highly-acclaimed concerts took place by outstanding musicians, including Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy. Today, Pesti Vigadó is housing interesting contemporary exhibitions and it has an unparalleled panoramic view from its roof terrace. Pest V, Vigadó tér 2., Map C4, www.vigado.hu CENTRAL MARKET The brightly colored tiled roof of this huge bazaar shelters a cornucopia of food stands, offering everything from fresh produce to pálinka brandy. Downstairs, vendors sell fresh fish, game, and – very Hungarian – all sorts of pickled and fermented products. Upstairs, vendors offer traditional gifts like woodworks, fine lace, and other souvenirs. Pest IX, Vámház krt. 1-3. Map A6 CHAIN BRIDGE The first permanent bridge crossing the Danube and uniting the separate towns of Pest and Buda was opened only in 1849. It was built by two Brits, architect William Clark and engineer Adam Clark (no relation), on the initiative of Count István Széchenyi, a great modernizer and liberal politician of the day. The more than 200 meter long suspension bridge was considered an engineering wonder and became a symbol for a modern Hungary. Map C4 HEROES’ SQUARE Budapest’s premier national ceremony site is dominated by the Millenary Monument, with statues of the seven headmen of the Hungarian tribes that, according to modern myth, conquered the Hungarian lands in 896. They pose at the foot of a column with Archangel Gabriel on the top and in front of a semicircular colonnade bearing statues of historical figures. Pest XIV, Hősök tere.
