The well-chosen route starts out at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Course, and progresses partly on the beach and road, before ending at the golf course. There are attractive prizes across many categories, including walkers. The first walker can win R300 and the first man and woman home in the open section R1 000 each. There are fun prizes for juniors, and unique money prizes to be earned in the following age groups 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and over 70. “I hope that we will get 300 people – if we get 150 then nearly everyone will get an Amanzi Festival T-shirt at least!” said Stiglingh, who knows how hard runners work in a race. You have to register for the race (adults R80, scholars R40 and pensioners R65), finish the race and wear a flash in front and back in order to win. Register online at entrytime.com, or at the hotel between 5-7pm tonight (March 29) or before the event tomorrow morning. There will also be a table available where you can register for the mile swim at the same time. Stiglingh has been with Kowie Striders for three years and has a permanent licence for completing 10 full-length (42km) marathons. This entitles him to run the Two Oceans in Cape Town, and he is flying there immediately after the trail run is over to do the half-marathon on Saturday while his wife, Marianne, and children do the full marathon. If you do not have a permanent licence, you can also purchase a temporary licence that will allow you to participate. You can buy a temporary licence to do the trail run for R30. You can also buy a permanent licence which is cheaper in the long run, according to Stiglingh who has sold 45 licences this year alone. Most of the people running in the trail run will be from Port Alfred rather than league runners who only run in well-established races, said Stiglingh. But in the future, he is confident the race will attract club runners from all around the countr y. There is a possibility a bike race will be added to the trail run and the mile swim and develop into a triathlon, he said. Currently, the trail run is a development race for 8km cross-country runners like Kowie St riders’ Wandile Funde, Ayabonga Saul and Mtutu Pikoli who could make the Eastern Province team and go on to run in the South African Cross Country Championships in Port Elizabeth this year. Derek and Cathy Braans are on their way to Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal where Derek becomes the new headmaster of Cowan House Preparatory School. While living in Grahamstown, Derek Braans has been headmaster of Kingswood Junior School, and Cathy Braans has been the owner of public relations and promotions firm Cathy Braans Public Relations. The former headmaster of Theodor Herzl School in Port Elizabeth takes up his appointment at Cowan House on April 1. There is a little-known fact about Derek Braans, and I’m about to share it with you. For two years – 1987 and 1988 – he was a professional rugby player in France, turning out for the Castres Olympique club, in Castres in the fullback and flyhalf positions. In December last year, the couple flew to France for a Castres Olympique reunion of former players and officials, and it was a really special and memorable occasion, they said. The Braans couple has three sons, all educated at Kingswood College. Cameron teaches at Kingswood Junior School and coaches under-13A rugby and cricket, Jono works at Investec in Johannesburg, and Michael is studying at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. While Cathy Braans herself is moving to another province, her PR and promotions firm will continue to operate with Lindsay Vroom handling matters locally, and Cathy a mere phone call, e-mail or SMS away. “Lindsay and I will handle operations j o i n t l y, ” said Cathy earlier this week. She added she will probably visit Grahamstown four times a year on business. The firm has several functions and projects lined up for the remainder of the year, including assisting with the organisation of the G2C mountain bike race, as well as organising a conference and various corporate dinners. ON THE RISE The good news on the water front this week is that Settlers Dam is, after all the rain we’ve had lately, estimated to be 25% of its total capacity. This represents an increase of about 6% in recent weeks. Nevertheless, water restrictions are still in place, residents should note. They are urged to use a maximum of 60 litres per person per day, while the use of hosepipes is not allowed, the watering of gardens except from non-municipal sources, and car washes are required to recycle 60% of water used. BRIGHT STAR ON THE CORNER The newly opened Makana Service Station at the corner of Beaufort and Bathurst streets represents an investment of R6-million by owners Jon Campbell and Mark Shelton, it was learnt at the official opening of the Caltex fuel station last Friday. Campbell also announced that a Pick n Pay convenience store will open in the double-storey dwelling alongside the filling station, hopefully before the end of the year. E-TYPE JAG TAKES SECOND Carel and Margaret Buchner, of Grahamstown piloted their 1963 Jaguar E-Type to second place overall at last w e e ke n d ’s OD Inggs Memorial Run hosted by the Port Alfred-based Albany Vintage & Classic Car Motor Club. The event is held each year in memory of the late OD Inggs, a Grahamstown undertaker and avid collector of vintage motor vehicles. Competitors in this year’s event visited Bathurst, Grahamstown, Bedford, Alexandria and Kenton-on-Sea. Among the cars taking part were a 1946 Morris 8, a number of Mercedes-Benz sedans, two Austins and two Rovers. Entrants came from Port Elizabeth, East London, Komani, Grahamstown and Port Alfred. The Buchners’ Jaguar was also voted the most desirable car in the event. GREAT START TO SCHOOLS’ R U G BY SEASON With the weather playing along in ultra-bright fashion last Saturday, the Pam Golding Properties Graeme College rugby day was a massive success, with schools’ players and officials, plus supporters and parents, swelling the attendance figures for the day to several thousand. RESIDENTS SEE THE LIGHT After months of darkness, it is good to see that street lights are back on again in many parts of Grahamstown. The darkness was caused by electricity having “t ripped” at sub-stations, according to the Grahamstown Residents’ A s s o c i at i o n . JETTING OFF? I personally watched as the Jetpatcher crew (remember them?) repaired potholes on just one side of Market Street (between Hill and Bathurst streets) about four weeks ago. But, for some reason, they did not venture a few metres to the other side of the road, which earlier this week sported dozens of large potholes. I still cannot figure out why they did not repair both sides of the street that same day. Following all the fanfare upon the arrival of the Jetpatcher pothole-repairing crew in Grahamstown a few weeks ago, with residents closely following their progress, they appear to have left Grahamstown. From what I’ve read and heard, there are many other cities and towns in the Eastern Cape that have similar pothole problems. Meanwhile, I believe there are moves afoot to get Jetpatcher back on our streets. And let me tell you something, if you did not know it already – there are hundreds, if not thousands, of potholes eagerly awaiting their arrival! BUSY IN THE BOTS The first major aim for parkrunners, it would seem, is to complete 50 parkruns and follow it up with the long haul to number 100. Several parkrunners who participated last Saturday are nearing their 50th – Allison Holleman (49), Shane Hazell (48), John Haydock (48), Priyanka Harjeven (47), Bryn Reynolds (47), Gregory Shaw (46) and Sally Price-Smith (46). Further up the scale, Sydney Moyo has just two parkruns to go to his 100th. First finisher out of 150 participants last Saturday was Nicholas Greeff (20 minutes 34 seconds), second was Enock Mukwekwe (21:19) and third Daniel Erasmus (21:44). Charlotte Abraham was first in the ladies’ division (25:49), second was Shimorne Prince (27:23) and third was Carolyn Grant (27:56). AWARD RECIPIENT Professor Jacqueline Akhurst of the Rhodes Universit y’s Department of Psychology is the recipient of the 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Community Engagement. The award will be made to Akhurst at the 2018 Rhodes graduation ceremonies. SHORT DRIVE TO THE SHOW It’s only a 40km drive to the Bathurst Showgrounds, so why not take a drive down there to the annual Bathurst Agricultural Show on April 6 to 8? BIG KC CONTINGENT FOR FESTIVAL More than 90 Kingswood College pupils are on their way to the St Stithian’s College Easter sports festival in Johannesburg. The Kingswood players will be involved in hockey, netball, squash and rugby matches. Meanwhile, the Kingswood U16 girls’ and boys’ hockey teams are travelling in the opposite direction to take part in the Woodridge College sports festival at Thornhill. STARK REMINDER I was in the 1820 Settlers National Monument the other day showing visitors from Durban around and came across this sign in one of the passageways, finding it rather interesting. The sign reads: “The wall along this passage to the Monument Restaurant was not restored after the fire of August 13 1994 so that it would serve as a stark reminder of that disaster which resulted in damage to the Monument estimated at R30-million”. However, the blobs of Prestik stuck to the walls in that passage are much more recent. LIGHTNING IN THE ROOM I attended a function late last week, held in a rather small room crammed with people. The use of flash photography was essential. I and the other photographer present clicked off a couple of shots when a would-be heckler among the invited guests said out aloud something to the effect that those present took umbrage to the “lightning flashes” in the room. What an inane and inappropriate remark that was, made while the MC was speaking! A first for me in 38 years of media photography! ON PENINSULA ROADS The Two Oceans ultra marathon (56km) and half marathon (21km) take place on Easter Saturday. To those Grahamstown runners who are flying to Cape Town or driving there – best wishes and good luck. CHURCH IDENTIFIED A fortnight ago, I mentioned in this column the names of churches in Hill Street back in 1966, wondering what the proper name was of the church which building is now occupied by Gary’s Refrigeration. Well, HK says she is sure the church was the Apostolic Faith Mission, known as the AFM Church.
