The adjustable last row is purposed
predominantly for children, who can sit in
comfort on shorter drives.
There is generous space for front and
rear passengers. In the front, the passengers
enjoy headroom of up to 1,013mm, while
the second-row gets 1,015mm and the third,
935mm.
With all the three rows of seats in place
there is only 470 litres of storage, but with
seats folded down, this expands to 1,405 litres,
a capacity many cars can only dream about.
The new QX80 is best enjoyed as an “airline
experience” from the second row.
Given its size, you might think that driving
the QX80 might be an absolute pain but to my
surprise, it is as easy to manoeuvre as a Jaguar
F-PACE.
The powerful 5.6-litre (5,552cc) 32-valve
direct injection V8 engine which puts 298kW of
power and 560Nm of torque at your disposal
is surprisingly nimble on the road despite its
sizeable proportions and monumental presence.
Although weighing in at 2,783kg (Tare
mass), the QX80 does the century sprint in a
respectable 7.5 seconds.
Car speed picks up nice and steadily,
and gear changes from the smooth-shifting
seven-speed automatic transmissions are
calm and quick.
You may think that the QX80’s body-onframe
construction means it conforms to the
behaviour of a truck, but no … the ride quality
is outstanding and the Hydraulic Body Motion
Control (HBMC) helps stabilise the body during
manoeuvres, providing a more car-like ride.
As the car corners and its body starts to
lean, HBMC firms up the suspension on one
side to counter that effect.
Standard with four-wheel drive, the QX80
features Infiniti’s proven All-Mode 4WD system
with computer-controlled transfer case, offers
settings of Auto, 4WD High and 4WD Low. It
has 22 inch forged aluminium-alloy wheels with
new 18-spoke design.
The new Infiniti QX80 has choice of
seven contemporary exterior colours of which
three are new, and one interior trim and
upholstery option, and is priced at $110,900
plus on road costs.
