Cyclone, who have arranged a package<br />
deal for all seven schools, enabling parents to<br />
pay off the devices over three years, if they<br />
need to. At this stage, 75-80 per cent of the<br />
devices at our school are student-owned. The<br />
others are supplied by the school.”<br />
Both principals say one of the most important<br />
elements of the digital platform is the ability<br />
it gives students to write their own blogs and<br />
share their work with each other and with<br />
family and friends, which Mr Sutton describes<br />
as “learning made visible”.<br />
Mr Roberts says they can “upload their work<br />
and share it with a worldwide audience”.<br />
“They couldn’t do that without the technology.<br />
That’s one of the cool things about the Uru<br />
Manuka cluster.”<br />
With Manaiakalani Education Trust funding<br />
coming to an the end, a new trust for Uru<br />
Manuka has been set up in Christchurch<br />
to continue funding the programme, which<br />
requires $150,000 a year to run. The trustees<br />
are former Christchurch mayor Garry Moore,<br />
Janine Morrell-Gunn, manager of The Hub<br />
Jason Marsden, and Rose Crossland.<br />
Since moving into brand-new buildings on the<br />
former Branston Intermediate site in Hornby,<br />
everyone has settled in really well, South<br />
Hornby School principal Simon Moriarty says.<br />
“The children and the community are loving<br />
the new environment. The classrooms have all<br />
been purpose-built to meet the learning needs<br />
of all our students,” he says.<br />
“The outdoor area links with the indoor and<br />
there is additional space in the playground,<br />
which also includes a scooter track. It’s very<br />
important to have that balance between learning<br />
and the kids having fun.”<br />
The last step in the move to the new site will<br />
be completing the upgrade to the existing<br />
school pool, Mr Moriarty says.<br />
“That’s the second stage of the project and<br />
the pool should be ready for the start of the<br />
<strong>2018</strong>/19 season.”<br />
The main focus for Term 2 at South Hornby<br />
Primary will be the celebration of Matariki,<br />
towards the end of the term.<br />
“We have worked alongside the local rununga,<br />
Te Taumutu, and they have gifted our school<br />
with the name Te Manu Tukutuku, which translates<br />
as kite. This has historical significance to<br />
Maori in the local area, and we have named<br />
our classrooms with the Maori names of the<br />
four prevailing winds in Canterbury, which ties<br />
in with the cultural narrative.”<br />
School rolls in the western suburbs are in<br />
a period of growth, and with the enrolment<br />
zones, it means that children living in the<br />
South Hornby area will have a place at South<br />
Hornby School, Mr Moriarty says.<br />

Anyone that enjoys cooking Italian food knows fresh pasta is the only way to go<br />
to achieve that authentic flavour and texture.<br />
Residents in the western suburbs are fortunate to have a fresh pasta producer<br />
right on their doorstep – Pasta Vera. The business was founded 17 years<br />
ago by New Zealander Phil Bennett, a baker by trade, who had fallen<br />
in love with Italy and its cuisine after travelling around the country<br />
and experiencing the Italian food culture.<br />
On his return home he set up Pasta Vera, initially wholesaling to local<br />
Christchurch restaurants.<br />
As the business grew, Phil and his wife and business partner Linda<br />
developed the product range from simple fettuccine and ravioli to include<br />
many other types of pasta such as cannelloni and gnocchi as well as pesto and<br />
pasta sauces.<br />
Recently they expanded their business further with the opening of their new,<br />
custom-built factory in Wigram Road, Sockburn, which includes a factory shop<br />
offering the full range of fresh pasta and other authentic Italian food items so<br />
you can create delicious Italian meals at home.<br />
For those days when you are short of time and need a quick, tasty meal for the<br />
family, or you have unexpected guests, they offer re-heat and serve meals. These<br />
include the very popular baked lasagne, which is available as a single serve meal<br />
or as a catering tray for groups – ideal for family occasions.<br />
Other items regularly available include end-of-lines, samples and<br />
special restaurant samples at discount prices.<br />
The Pasta Vera Factory Shop is located on the corner of Wigram<br />
Road and Musgrove Close. With plenty of off-street parking<br />
available, it’s quick and convenient to pop in and pick up your<br />
fresh pasta and sauce or ready-made meals.<br />
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am-5pm with a<br />
late night Thursday until 6pm, and Saturday 9am-1pm.
