NEW SCHOOL A HIT
WITH STUDENTS
& COMMUNITY
he says.
“We have a relationship with computer supplier
Cyclone, who have arranged a package
deal for all seven schools, enabling parents to
pay off the devices over three years, if they
need to. At this stage, 75-80 per cent of the
devices at our school are student-owned. The
others are supplied by the school.”
Both principals say one of the most important
elements of the digital platform is the ability
it gives students to write their own blogs and
share their work with each other and with
family and friends, which Mr Sutton describes
as “learning made visible”.
Mr Roberts says they can “upload their work
and share it with a worldwide audience”.
“They couldn’t do that without the technology.
That’s one of the cool things about the Uru
Manuka cluster.”
With Manaiakalani Education Trust funding
coming to an the end, a new trust for Uru
Manuka has been set up in Christchurch
to continue funding the programme, which
requires $150,000 a year to run. The trustees
are former Christchurch mayor Garry Moore,
Janine Morrell-Gunn, manager of The Hub
Jason Marsden, and Rose Crossland.
Since moving into brand-new buildings on the
former Branston Intermediate site in Hornby,
everyone has settled in really well, South
Hornby School principal Simon Moriarty says.
“The children and the community are loving
the new environment. The classrooms have all
been purpose-built to meet the learning needs
of all our students,” he says.
“The outdoor area links with the indoor and
there is additional space in the playground,
which also includes a scooter track. It’s very
important to have that balance between learning
and the kids having fun.”
The last step in the move to the new site will
be completing the upgrade to the existing
school pool, Mr Moriarty says.
“That’s the second stage of the project and
the pool should be ready for the start of the
2018/19 season.”
The main focus for Term 2 at South Hornby
Primary will be the celebration of Matariki,
towards the end of the term.
“We have worked alongside the local rununga,
Te Taumutu, and they have gifted our school
with the name Te Manu Tukutuku, which translates
as kite. This has historical significance to
Maori in the local area, and we have named
our classrooms with the Maori names of the
four prevailing winds in Canterbury, which ties
in with the cultural narrative.”
School rolls in the western suburbs are in
a period of growth, and with the enrolment
zones, it means that children living in the
South Hornby area will have a place at South
Hornby School, Mr Moriarty says.
Create authentic Italian
dishes with locally
made fresh pasta
Anyone that enjoys cooking Italian food knows fresh pasta is the only way to go
to achieve that authentic flavour and texture.
Residents in the western suburbs are fortunate to have a fresh pasta producer
right on their doorstep – Pasta Vera. The business was founded 17 years
ago by New Zealander Phil Bennett, a baker by trade, who had fallen
in love with Italy and its cuisine after travelling around the country
and experiencing the Italian food culture.
On his return home he set up Pasta Vera, initially wholesaling to local
Christchurch restaurants.
As the business grew, Phil and his wife and business partner Linda
developed the product range from simple fettuccine and ravioli to include
many other types of pasta such as cannelloni and gnocchi as well as pesto and
pasta sauces.
Recently they expanded their business further with the opening of their new,
custom-built factory in Wigram Road, Sockburn, which includes a factory shop
offering the full range of fresh pasta and other authentic Italian food items so
you can create delicious Italian meals at home.
For those days when you are short of time and need a quick, tasty meal for the
family, or you have unexpected guests, they offer re-heat and serve meals. These
include the very popular baked lasagne, which is available as a single serve meal
or as a catering tray for groups – ideal for family occasions.
Other items regularly available include end-of-lines, samples and
special restaurant samples at discount prices.
The Pasta Vera Factory Shop is located on the corner of Wigram
Road and Musgrove Close. With plenty of off-street parking
available, it’s quick and convenient to pop in and pick up your
fresh pasta and sauce or ready-made meals.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am-5pm with a
late night Thursday until 6pm, and Saturday 9am-1pm.
