MacDonald to
lead board
• By Sophie Cornish
SAM MACDONALD
has been voted in as the
new chairman of the
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community
Board.
Former chairman
David Cartwright tabled
his resignation at a board
meeting on April 9, after
planning to step down
18 months into the role.
A vote for Mr
MacDonald’s former
position as deputy
chairman resulted
in a tie between Mr
Cartwright and Aaron
Campbell.
Mr MacDonald said
it was decided among
board members to give
Mr Campbell the role.
Mr Cartwright will
still remain on the board
and is “committed to
working for Fendalton,”
said Mr MacDonald.
“The most important
thing at the moment, and
the real focus, is on the Long
Term Plan submission. I will
be presenting our submission
to council on
April 30,” said Mr
MacDonald.
“Within that, we
will be advocating
for a low, if not
minimal, rate
increase and
some of the key
projects in our
ward, including
the traffic lights for
Aaron Keown and
Sam MacDonald the community in
Harewood.”
The leadership
changes took
effect from last
Monday.
Mr Cartwright
said he was stepping
aside to let other
board members
take on more
responsibility.
“It’s about
building expertise
David Cartwright and giving people
a chance . . . there
are very capable people on the
board,” he said.
Mr Thomas said the
guidelines went “to key
stakeholders for comment”
and are expected to be
completed by Monday. They
include information which will
assist “decision makers make
consistent decisions when
considering requests to apply the
bylaw.”
Community Board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said she made two suggestions
after reading the draft guidelines.
“There is a section which
considers whether the street is
being used as a thoroughfare for
a range of traffic. It states, if so,
traffic calming measures should
be considered. Traffic calming
measures are non-existent
through lack of funding,” she
part of the guideline should
be deleted or modified. She
also said there needed to be an
“additional paragraph to state
that the community board has
discretionary powers relating to
heavy traffic vehicle restraint.”
When asked when restrictions
may be put on Lodestar Ave,
Mr Thomas said “staff expect to
be able to provide advice to the
community board in May.”
guidelines have been developed.
She said a heavy vehicle
with the issue and the board
would have to consider all
