DIVERSION ROAD TO ALLOW<br />
FOR MOTORWAY IMPROVEMENTS<br />
The Christchurch Southern<br />
Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project<br />
being carried out by NZ Transport<br />
Agency (NZTA) will see a diversion<br />
road in place for approximately<br />
18 months.<br />
As from <strong>April</strong> 27, traffic travelling<br />
on the Christchurch Southern<br />
Motorway will be switched onto<br />
the new temporary diversion<br />
road. (See map.) Traffic changes<br />
will be staged over a two-week<br />
period to allow for this.<br />
The diversion road will be in<br />
place until the new Halswell<br />
Junction interchange is ready to<br />
take traffic, estimated to be in<br />
late 2019, and is to allow the NZ<br />
Transport Agency to improve<br />
the safety and alignment of the<br />
Christchurch Southern Corridor.<br />
The CSM2 project is making Main<br />
South Road (SH1,) from near<br />
Rolleston to Robinsons Rd four<br />
lane, and building a new section of<br />
motorway through greenfields to<br />
connect with the first stage of the<br />
Christchurch Southern Motorway<br />
at Halswell Junction Road.<br />
The project will mean that<br />
residents and businesses in the<br />
Selwyn District (such as the Izone<br />
industrial park, and Rolleston)<br />
will have improved access to the<br />
Christchurch CBD, key employment<br />
centres and Lyttelton Port.<br />
It is expected to reduce fatal and<br />
serious crashes by 40 per cent<br />
and significantly reduce travel time<br />
between Rolleston and Christchurch.<br />
The project will also provide<br />
better access in and out of<br />
Christchurch and this will in turn<br />
improve the economic well-being<br />
of the Canterbury region and the<br />
wider South Island, NZTA says.<br />
The project will also include a<br />
cycle/pedestrian-shared path<br />
linking the Christchurch Southern<br />
Motorway Stage 1 cycle/pedestrian<br />
shared path with the existing<br />
Little River Rail Trail.<br />
Traffic moving onto the new section<br />
of motorway will reduce the<br />
number of vehicles on Main South<br />
Rd through Templeton and on<br />
other local roads making it safer<br />
for communities, including cyclists<br />
and pedestrians around the communities<br />
of Templeton, Hornby<br />
and Prebbleton.<br />
Costing $195 million, the project<br />
is designed by Aecom and is being<br />
constructed by the Downer Mc-<br />
Connell Dowell Joint Venture.<br />
