IN THE GARDEN
Kiwi Gardener magazine highlights
what to prioritise in the garden now.
BY RACHEL VOGAN
Autumn is my favourite season of the year. With the cooler nights and warm days, it ticks the box for me. It is also a wonderful
time to get trees and shrubs planted out in the garden, and garden centres and plant stockists have amazing sales on – so it has
the bonus of being probably the most affordable time of year to invest in your garden, too.
Always bear in mind that plants will grow. While it looks better to plant a few extras to make the area look fuller, in a season or
two those small plants will more than likely to have doubled – if not tripled – in size. So, use restraint and, if need be, use a tape
measure to avoid hours of trimming in years to come.
INDOOR PLANTS
Globally, indoor plants are experiencing a resurgence in
popularity. A light switch has been turned on and people have
remembered that indoor plants not only liven and brighten up
an indoor space, but clean the air at the same time. Well-placed
indoor plants and greenery create a more relaxing, restful
ambience in any room and, as the colder months come closer,
bring the outdoors in beside you. Baby indoor plants are exceptional
value, as you can buy a couple for less than the cost
of a decent coffee, however, if instant gratification is more your
style, go for the big boys.
PERENNIALS
Lift and divide perennials while they are still above the ground
– before they go into hibernation. The best way to do this is
to lay a tarp or old curtain on the lawn or in the garden and
dig the entire plant out of the ground, remove any dead or
unhealthy looking segments, then divide it into sections and
replant. If you cut off sections of the plant while it is in the
ground you can cause damage to the plant without knowing it.
Good plants to divide now are hostas, ligularia, red hot poker,
delphiniums, alstroemeria, lady’s mantle, and astrantia. Hold doing
this for your dahlias for another month – you may as well
enjoy the blooms for a bit longer.
VEGETABLES
This month can be tricky in the vegetable patch. Some crops, such as
tomatoes and cucumbers, are still hanging on and producing and, whilst
this isn’t a bad thing, they are taking up valuable space that may be
required for autumn and winter crops. If you need the room, at some
point you might just have to be ruthless.
Loads of seedlings can go in this month, but not before the soil has had
a makeover. It is especially important to add nutrients and compost
now leading into winter. Plant out bok choy, celery, beetroot, salad
greens, kale and rocket. Sow broad bean seeds at some point this
month, too. This can be done directly into the ground, but if you don’t
have room in the garden – or if it’s simply easier – sow into punnets.
