SALON C C1 ready for the real World? Career Education for Middle School
Students [E, M]
<strong>Careers</strong> Education is a real eye-opener for many middle school students. It is a
concept that can be adapted to core classes, exploratory classes, and advisory periods.
This presentation provides some ideas on how to bring <strong>Careers</strong> Education into the
classroom, shares experiences from a <strong>Careers</strong> Education exploratory teacher, and
suggests ideas for classroom activities and where to go for more materials. Repeats

of Labor Statistics [H, P, A]
The presentation will focus on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ biennial look at the labor
market 10 years into the future, including a look at occupations and industries that are
expected to grow. It will provide information on how global competition and changes
in technology, business practices, and the demand for goods and services will affect job
growth and the education and training needs of the future labor force. Repeats

SALON H C1 Developing a Comprehensive Career Development Program at a Two-Year
Campus [P]
This session discusses the role of career development at a two-year commuter campus.
The presenters will identify the institution’s demographics and discuss challenges and
the solutions the campus has developed to meet the needs of this student population.
The presentation centers on integrating career development theory and practices
throughout campus. First Year Seminars, Career and Life Planning, and Issues and
Values in the Workforce courses will be addressed. Repeats as Roundtable 88.

SALON G C18 Using Miniatures and Models as Job Search Training Aids [M, H, P, A]
Office-building mock-ups have been used in teaching adults and at-risk high school
students to visualize the interview and job search environments. A modular office
building can be constructed using basic craft materials and be modularly designed to
represent different companies and interview scenarios. The buildings are made along
workshop themes and reinforce the learning objectives. A variety of miniature gaming
figures support developing workshops along different themes: samurai for the Art of
War and monsters for Halloween. Repeats as Roundtable 69.

SALON A C19 Closing the Gap [M, H, P]
Students are entering classrooms with a lot more in their backpacks than books.
They are expected to sit in class and learn, score high on standardized tests, and plan
their future career path -- at the same time that they try to navigate adolescence, peer
pressure, gangs, home problems, and more. Schools must focus on students being
healthy, both mind and body, in order to get students back on a successful track. This
session will discuss issues and conduct a sensitivity training to help teachers, staff and
administrators understand why students are failing and help with solutions. Repeats as
