SUPErIOr rOOM Learned from the research<br />

James R. St<strong>on</strong>e III<br />

What do we know about schools’ role in improving a student’s chances <strong>of</strong><br />

success in the future? Do high school <strong>and</strong> postsec<strong>on</strong>dary career <strong>and</strong> technical<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> make a difference? What else can we do to assist our young people<br />

<strong>and</strong> adults in transiti<strong>on</strong> to prepare for their next step in life?<br />

The facts tell an alarming story: Just 68% <strong>of</strong> 9th graders finish high school.<br />

Only a minority <strong>of</strong> students who start a college program finish. And <strong>of</strong> those<br />

who do finish high school, many are not equipped for the challenges that<br />

await them as they move <strong>on</strong> to further educati<strong>on</strong> or the workplace.<br />

In this provocative sessi<strong>on</strong>, Dr. James St<strong>on</strong>e will highlight some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

less<strong>on</strong>s learned from six years <strong>of</strong> research c<strong>on</strong>ducted by the Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Research <str<strong>on</strong>g>Center</str<strong>on</strong>g> for Career <strong>and</strong> Technical Educati<strong>on</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Minnesota. Using data collected from this research, he’ll help us c<strong>on</strong>sider<br />

how to apply these less<strong>on</strong>s to the critical issues c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ting all <strong>of</strong> us who<br />

work to prepare students <strong>and</strong> adults for their future lives as lifel<strong>on</strong>g<br />

learners <strong>and</strong> productive workers.<br />

James r. St<strong>on</strong>e III, Ph.D., is the director <strong>of</strong> the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Research <str<strong>on</strong>g>Center</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

for Career <strong>and</strong> Technical Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> career <strong>and</strong><br />

technical educati<strong>on</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Minnesota. He is a widely recognized<br />

expert in educati<strong>on</strong>al transiti<strong>on</strong>s, particularly transiti<strong>on</strong>s between<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> work, <strong>and</strong> has developed a series <strong>of</strong> studies examining<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s between the workplace <strong>and</strong> formal educati<strong>on</strong>. James is<br />

a passi<strong>on</strong>ate <strong>and</strong> humorous speaker who enjoys taking the results <strong>of</strong> his<br />

work <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>on</strong>strating how to apply them in practice with students <strong>and</strong><br />

adults.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ference Goal: C<strong>on</strong>nect educati<strong>on</strong> with business <strong>and</strong> industry<br />

to enable school-to -career transiti<strong>on</strong>
