This session presents a strategy for helping high school and college students relate
their academic and non-academic experiences to developing the skills employers want.
Based on his book, 10 Things Employers Want You to Learn in College, the presenter will
provide a list of 38 skills and discuss strategies for seeing how what students do in high
school and college serves as basic training for the real world of careers. Repeats

SALON D C61 Giving Value to a Values Exercise: Using an Understanding of Personal
Values in the Job Search Process [H, P, A]
A person’s happiness and satisfaction in a given career and with a specific employer
is built upon three pillars: interests, skills, and values. This hands-on session will
introduce participants to a values exploration process designed to help the client/
student understand his or her values as they relate to work, and to use that awareness
to look for the “fit” between the individual’s values and the culture of the potential

In today’s global economy, people need career counseling services more than ever. The
question for many career services programs is how to address these needs in a costefficient
manner. This presentation highlights a career services program based in a
university setting that serves young people, university students, and community adults.
It illustrates how a theory-based career services program can meet the needs of various
populations by matching service delivery to the level of assistance needed.

By the year 2010, our population—including students and their families—will be
significantly represented by Latinos, Hispanics, Mexicans, and Chicanos. This session
will build participants’ understanding of what takes place in the minds of our Spanishspeaking
students. Literature, movies, and songs illustrate patterns of their struggles.
Moving these students into the job market can be confusing and challenging. The
presenter will describe tools and a program that will help lead these students to
academic success and through a pre-employment program.
