SALON E F 6 Attitude is Everything: Its Impact on Career and Employability
What’s the most important thing affecting employability and success on the job? This
thought-provoking presentation will use real-life stories to focus on helping clients
and students understand the significance and benefits of teamwork and connecting
with others. Delivered in Kirk’s humorous, motivational style, this session will provide
applicable, practical, and positive information you can use. Data from multiple sources
will demonstrate that attitude is the most important of all employability skills.
kirk P. Wyers, Jr., is the Director of Career and Technical Education at the Newaygo
County Regional Education Service Agency in western Michigan, where he also has
served as the Career Tech <strong>Center</strong> Director. Kirk has K-12 experience as a principal, assistant
principal, athletic director, and teacher. He has served on and co-chaired North
Central Accreditation Teams, and chaired United Way and March of Dimes fundraiser
committees. He is a former Board Member for the Michigan Association of Secondary
School Principals, and was honored as “Principal of the Year” in 1996.Kirk has presented
on school-to-work and career initiatives at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
Currently, he serves on the board of the Fremont Area Community Foundation, as a local
school board member, on the Board of Directors for his local Boys/Girls Club, and
as President of the Michigan West Central Career-Tech Partnership.

Behavioral Disabilities [M, H, P]
How do we motivate our most difficult students to “buy into” what we teach?
Learn about a School-Based Enterprise that is being used to offer these students an
opportunity to gain work experience, apply basic academics, practice social skills,
and hone emotional competence within authentic contexts while developing an
employability skills portfolio. Participants will receive a curriculum framework, sample
lesson plans, and evaluation rubrics.

SALON G C 8 The Career Major Program: Framing Comprehensive Career
Development [H]
West Allis Nathan Hale High School’s Career Academy has been recognized as the
best career program in Wisconsin and fourth best in the nation. Learn how to use
career majors as a valuable component of a dynamic program that includes interest
inventories, career research, job shadowing, mock interviews, career assemblies,
employability skills, career portfolios, and career-related community activities.
Implementation strategies for all activities will be covered. Repeats as Roundtable 23.
