Career educati<strong>on</strong> in Japan began in April 2004. The Ministry <strong>of</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong>, Science,<br />
Technology, <strong>and</strong> Culture developed a Career Educati<strong>on</strong> Program based <strong>on</strong> the Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Japanese Career Educati<strong>on</strong> Guidelines. Forty-five regi<strong>on</strong>al sites, including elementary<br />
through high schools, met to pilot career educati<strong>on</strong> in the schools. This sessi<strong>on</strong> will<br />
describe the beginnings <strong>and</strong> development <strong>of</strong> career educati<strong>on</strong> in Japan.<br />

There are tools available to at no-cost from the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Labor developed<br />
for career counseling, planning, <strong>and</strong> explorati<strong>on</strong>. Results provided through the O*NET<br />
career assessments are part <strong>of</strong> a whole-pers<strong>on</strong> approach to the assessment process.<br />
The Interest Pr<strong>of</strong>iler helps individuals identify their work-related interests. The <strong>Work</strong><br />
Importance Pr<strong>of</strong>iler helps them decide what is important to them in a job. The newly<br />
released Ability Pr<strong>of</strong>iler <strong>and</strong> General Aptitude Test Battery help individuals identify<br />
what they can do well. Also explored will be America’s Career Info Net <strong>and</strong> its many<br />
features.<br />
