Career education in Japan began in April 2004. The Ministry of Education, Science,
Technology, and Culture developed a Career Education Program based on the National
Japanese Career Education Guidelines. Forty-five regional sites, including elementary
through high schools, met to pilot career education in the schools. This session will
describe the beginnings and development of career education in Japan.

GrEEN BAY rOOM Career portfolios have long been considered a powerful employment tool. However,
with advancements in technology, employers are demanding real time access to a
candidate’s proof of skills and abilities. A powerful electronic career portfolio can make
the difference between getting a job and continuing the job search. This high-energy
session will describe the process of developing electronic portfolios, discuss how to use

SALON D C Job Survival and Success Scale: Identifying and Enhancing Emotional
Intelligence Skills [H, P, A]
Research indicates that interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are the most soughtafter
characteristics of new and prospective employees, even more so than job-related
knowledge. These characteristics and skills, however, have been neglected in services
provided by career counselors working with people transitioning into the workforce.
This session will explore The Job Survival and Success Scale (JSSS) which measures
soft, emotional intelligence skills that are critical for surviving and succeeding in the

LACrOSSE rOOM C 3A O*NET Career Exploration Tools: A New, Free, and Useful resource
[H, P, A]
There are tools available to at no-cost from the U.S. Department of Labor developed
for career counseling, planning, and exploration. Results provided through the O*NET
career assessments are part of a whole-person approach to the assessment process.
The Interest Profiler helps individuals identify their work-related interests. The Work
Importance Profiler helps them decide what is important to them in a job. The newly
released Ability Profiler and General Aptitude Test Battery help individuals identify
what they can do well. Also explored will be America’s Career Info Net and its many
features.
