For example, South Africa's constantly developing economy presents
much opportunity for it's growing youth population in terms of labour
force however it bears a massive skills shortage due to a mismatch of
qualification and field of study. With the growing rate of technology
disruptions, taking up 5.1 million of existing work between 2015-2020 in
15 major & emerging economies according to the WEF.: The Future of
Jobs. This is a major cry for a skills upgrade within organizations and
learning institutions curricula. Which is why preparing our youth by
equipping them with a theory guided project & problem-based learning is
essential, as it provides employment readiness due to it's practical
application of the learnt curriculum & soft skills training leaving students
affective competencies & standard proficiencies. This means employers
require employees who can collaborate, communicate and influence as
modern workplace environments reflect this through open-plan
workspaces designed for increased interaction.
It is due to these identified needs we have collaborated with existing
NGO's to adopt the Skill Exchange Makerspace model, corporate
companies to help onboard our students after completion and
universities to help with the knowledge transfer by using the space for
their students practical application of their field of study. This will creates
consistently high quality learning, accessibility to students, international
recognition and relevancy to the needs of industry. By introducing new
approaches such work integrated learning using project & problem-based
learning & assessment, opening room for Recognition of Prior Learning,
Skill Exchange Makerspace will create personalized career pathways for
people who seek autonomy, authenticity, craftsmanship & meaningful
assessment.
