Lynnfield seniors
are Punbelievable
By Lindsey Ryan
This is an exciting time of
year for high school seniors,
focusing on prom, college and
graduation. While Lynnfield
High School students Molly
Pifko, Alberto Benitez, Makayla
Maffeo, Raden Sorli Hawk and
Dominick Gravante have exciting
school events to look
forward to, their main focus
is representing Massachusetts
in the Global Finals for the
Destination Imagination, along
with the fourth grade Summer
Street and Huckleberry Hill
Elementary School students at
the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville, Tennessee from May
23 to May 26.
Destination Imagination is
leading educational nonprofit
dedicated to teaching students
the skills needed to succeed in
school, their careers and beyond.
They develop project-based
learning programs that blend
science, technology, engineering
and mathematics, (STEM) education
with the arts and social
entrepreneurship. The teams will
find themselves among 8000
students from 45 U.S. states and
more than 15 different countries
displaying their innovative challenge
solutions.
Their team “Punbelievable”
along with the fourth grade
Summer Street and Huckleberry
Hill Elementary School team
“Sugar High” were two of the
winning teams at Destination
Imagination’s Massachusetts
Regional and State tournaments.
The seven 2017-2018 challenge
areas competitors could
choose from include: Technical,
Scientific, Engineering, Fine
Arts, Improvisational, Service
Learning, Early learning and
the Instant Challenge.
Each challenge must involve
storytelling as a way
to prove their theory. The
“Punbelievable” team is involved
in the Scientific challenge,
along with the “Sugar
High” team.
“Punbelievable” took home
the first place title in the state
competition for the scientific
challenge ‘Unlikely Attraction’.
The team was tasked with
building a carnival attraction in
an unlikely location. They built
a high striker inside a treehouse,
and they portrayed little children
dressing up as the characters
chosen by the ‘random’
strikes on the high striker. The
high striker was programmed
by a Raspberry Pi computer
which generated the correct answers
as coded.
“They have to have principles
which will be the principles of
their carnival attraction,” said
coach Elaine Gravante, and
mother to Dominick Gravante.
“They use a computer called
a Raspberry Pi and they programmed
a string of lights on
the high striker. For the first
strike it’s always going to land
on a pirate, the second strike
will be a girl scout. Each strike
corresponds with that character
that they have to portray, it’s all
pre-programmed.”
The characters are as follows,
IMAGINATION
Destination Imagination is a
beyond. They develop project-based
learning programs
that blend science, technology,
engineering and mathematics,
(STEM) education with the arts
The Lynnfield students will
have plenty of company in
Knoxville: 8,000 students from
45 states and more than 15 different
countries will put their
innovative challenge solutions
on display.
Lynnfield’s Summer
Street and Huckleberry Hill
team “Sugar High” and the
Lynnfield High School team
“Punbelievable” were two of the
winning teams at Destination
Imagination’s Massachusetts
regional and state tournaments.
In “Sugar High’s” skit, which
was based on the scientific challenge
“Unlikely Attraction,” a
princess becomes aware of a
slum in Mumbai and the issues
they face to fulfill their necessities.
She introduces a vending
machine and water filter to provide
free nutritious food and
clean water. She also ensures
the food packaging and water
cups are compostable. The team
creatively represented the slum
using rags, cardboard, paper
and brought it to life using
sound effects.
Radhika Maruvanchery is
a mother of Nandana, and is
the co manager of the “Sugar
High” team, along with Kim
Buonopane, mother of Lydia
Buonopane.
“One of the first things the
team does is they look through
the challenges for that year, and
they only have to pick one challenge
which is called the main
challenge,” said Maruvanchery.
There are seven categories
of challenges each year for
Destination Imagination competitions,
the “Sugar High” team
chose the scientific challenge.
“When they compete in the
tournament they have something
called an ‘instant challenge’
which is not known until
the day of the tournament,” said
Maruvanchery. “They are asked
to do a specific task in a certain
amount of time.”
The judges will then rate their
performance by how well they
were able to execute the task.
Other challenges teams
can choose to pursue include
Technical, Scientific,
Engineering, Fine Arts,
Improvisational, Service
Learning, Early learning and
the Instant Challenge.
Each challenge must involve
storytelling as a way to prove
their theory.
The scientific challenge the
girls chose has them exploring
scientific concepts used in
amusement park attractions,
hence the vending machine
providing nutritious food in the
slums.
The princess in the slums
fulfills the need to create and
present a story that features the
attraction operating in an unlikely
location.
“The impact was the slum
was a place where people did
not have nutritious food or
clean water available, so they
are bringing a solution where
the vending machine and the
water filter will provide that
needs of that slum,” she said.
The “Sugar High” team meets
after school and on the weekends,
and have been meeting
more frequently as the Global
Finals are fast approaching.
“The main aspect of this
challeges is all of the ideas,
thoughts and creativity are
coming straight from the
team,” Maruvanchery said. “ As
coaches we are not supposed to
influence in any form.”
“They are learning to work
together as a team, they are
learning time management and
how to distribute tasks. There
is a lot of learning and different
stages of team building.” she
said.
The team has also learned
project management skills, as
well as presentation skills.
“They are thrilled, we didn’t
think we would make it this far,”
said Maruvanchery. The “Sugar
High” team’s entire family will
be traveling to Knoxville for the
event.
“I think what they are looking
forward to is meeting other
teams from different countries
and different states...I don’t
think they can ask for more excitement,”
she said.
The students are organizing
flamingo flocking, bake sales,
an electronic recycling day, canning,
craft sales, fitness camp,
and a Red Sox raffle to assist
with the cost of travel and expenses.
Some of these are being
held as part of the Geranium
festival May 12 in Lynnfield.
The team has been very motivated
and responsible, said
Elaine Gravante. They have
been self-motivated during the
entire process, and with their
age and ability to drive on their
own they did not need as much
help from coach Gravante.
“With these kids they’ve done
it all themselves...they thought
of the plot, they did everything.
They even drove themselves
to Home Depot to get the supplies,”
she said.
A popular fundraiser the team
has been doing is “flocking”
where you can “flock” a friend,
neighbor, or anyone else for a minimum
donation of $20. At night
the team will put flamingos in the
yards of potentially unsuspecting
people, and will put up a sign
saying “you’ve been flocked.”
The Lynnfield Police Department
as well as the Superintendent Jane
Tremblay have all been flocked.
“My kids are absolutely
thrilled. It’s the culmination of
all of their hard work, the highschool
years, their friendship,
and they are all really close
friends. The Globals is such a
ASPIRIN MAY CUT BREAST CANCER RISK
We already know that a low-dose (81-milligram) aspirin tablet is associated
with a number of health benefits, including lowering heart attack risk. Now,
researchers have also found that taking low-dose aspirin three times per
week may lower women’s risk of developing breast cancer by up to 20%.
This finding is based on an analysis of data of 57,164 women between the
years 2005 and 2013. Overall, women who reported using low-dose aspirin
at least three times per week were 16% less likely to develop breast cancer
than those who used aspirin less frequently. When looking at breast cancer
subtypes, the risk of developing HR positive/HER2-negative breast cancer
was 20% lower. It is thought that aspirin’s anti-inflammatory effects may be
responsible.
Like any over-the- counter-medication, it’s important not to abuse aspirin
and to talk to your doctor about the safety of taking aspirin for other ailments
besides the conventional headache. Depending on what other prescription or
OTC drugs you’re taking, aspirin may be contraindicated in your particular
case. For more information, please call or visit VILLAGE PHARMACY in the
Colonial Shopping Center (781-334-3133).
HINT: “HR” status refers to whether or not the breast cancer cells contain
receptors for the hormones estrogen or progesterone, while “HER2” status is
whether or not cancer cells contain too many HER2 receptors, which can fuel
breast cancer growth.
ARBOR
DAY
CELEBRATION
On Friday, April 27, Lynnfield
celebrated Arbor Day.
The town tree planting was
only slightly postponed in the
evening to accommodate the
passing rain showers, but our
new Sugar Maple is now firmly
entrenched into the community.
The official proclamation was
read by guest, Frances Fleming.
This tree joins other native
trees in the immediate area of
Town Hall. It is highly encouraged
to plant native trees as
they are the best at diversifying
habitat, supporting wildlife, and
requires fewer resources to sustain
life.
Join the Tree Committee
again Saturday, May 12 on the
Common from 9:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m., where we will be
spinning our Tree Wheel. There
will be chances for you to win a
tree, including a Sugar Maple of
your own, plus more tree prizes.
There will be activities and
Arseneault heading to Assumption
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — After a year of being
courted by several college basketball
coaches and recruiters, Lynnfield senior
Billy Arseneault made it official Friday;
he will be taking his basketball talent to
Assumption College in Worcester.
Arseneault signed on the dotted line
during a ceremony in the Lynnfield
gymnasium.
“It was a long process from start to
finish and I am glad it’s finally over,”
said Arseneault.
Several other Northeast-10 schools
were chasing Arseneault, including
Merrimack, Stonehill and Bentley as
well as Bridgewater State, where his
older brother Tom is on the wrestling
team.
Arseneault said Assumption came into
the mix after he sent his Hudle highlights
video to several coaches after the end of
this past season. Things fell into place
during a hectic April vacation week.
“Within 15 minutes of posting the
video, I got a call from the Assumption
coach,” said Arseneault.
“He thought I had already been picked
up by another D2 team, and he offered
me a scholarship on an overnight visit to
the school on Tuesday of April vacation
week.”
Arseneault had a breakout season as a
junior when he earned the first of backto-back
Cape Ann League Player of the
Billy Arseneault signs a letter of intent to play basketball at Assumption
College. With him Friday at the Lynnfield gym are, left to right, his father
Wayne Arseneault, Lynnfield coach Scott MacKenzie and his mother Susan
Arseneault.
Year awards. He averaged 15.8 points
and 7.1 assists per game.
His senior year was even better in
spite of the fact that he was often double-teamed.
He averaged 20.7 points
and nearly eight assists per game. He
quickly adapted to being the focal point
of most opponents’ game plans, opting
to pass the ball to open teammates.
“I definitely saw a lot more boxand-one
this year, which caused tension
but opened up more chances for me to
thread the needle to teammates,” he said.
He finished his 3-year varsity career
with 1,022 points, becoming only the
second Pioneer (Mike Kennedy was the
first) to hit the milestone in the Scott
MacKenzie era, and seventh overall.
“His numbers are impressive, but even
more so considering how many times he
made that pinpoint pass only to have a
teammate miss a layup of open shot,”
said MacKenzie. “I say it all the time,
he leads the league, and maybe the state
in missed assists.
“He is the best player that I have been
fortunate enough to coach in my seventeen
years affiliated with the program.
Skill, IQ, the ability to make his teammates
better, everything. And to think
that Billy is a kid who, yes, was born
with talent but truly worked at his game
to become the player that he has become
is something that I hope translates to
younger kids in town. To be great, you
need to have a ferocious work ethic and,
without a doubt, Billy is great.”
Arseneault will be joining an extremely
young Greyhounds team that
won just seven of 27 games last season
and featured a starting lineup of three
sophomores, one freshman and a junior.
“They struggled with injuries this
winter, but we have a good recruiting
class coming in,” said Arseneault. “I
hope to play a lot but will have to work
for it. They have a freshman guard who
is a scorer and I think they want him
to play more off-ball, so the opening is
there.”
Mitchell wins 400 in prestigious sprint
By Anne Marie Tobin
WESTON — It’s no secret that Lynnfield High senior
and Boston College commit Kate Mitchell is one of the
best distance runners in the state, and, with a ninth place
finish at the Indoor New Balance Indoor Nationals this
past March, one of the best high school runners in the
nation.
Saturday night, Mitchell proved she can also nail it
when it comes to sprinting.
In her first time running the event, Mitchell set a school
record and blazed her way to first place in the 400 at the
Weston Twilight Invitational Meet at Regis College and
Weston High School.
A week before the race, Mitchell was asked what she
needed to do to have a shot to win the race. Her answer?
“Run, really, really fast,” she said.
That game plan was spot on, as Mitchell finished in
57.73 to win by more than a second and a half over Peabody
freshman Jolene Murphy, who finished second in
59.42.
“I had never run a 400 before, not even in practice, so
I just went out fast by my standards, in 27 (seconds) and
tried to hold on the best I could,” she said. “I typically
try to stay patient and run a strategic race, but in the 400,
you don’t have time to do that because by the time you
make your move, the race is over. I was really happy,
though to run a sub-60, that was my goal.”
Mitchell is known for being an intelligent and patient
distance runner, sticking to her splits like clockwork,
then, picking off runners one by one down the final
stretches.
This race was no different.
“Despite going out in 27, I was last the last runner to
hit the 200 mark, but I gained the lead coming around
the final turn,” said Mitchell. “I knew the Peabody girl
was really fast and she would go out fast early. It helped
that I was in lane three, because with the staggered start,
FILE PHOTO
In her first time running the 400, Kate Mitchell won the event at the Weston Twilight Invitational at Regis
College.
I could the people ahead of me because they were on the
outer lanes. Being able to see them go out in front of me
was definitely a big help.”
Mitchell said she went into the race with zero expectations
and with her sudden success in the 400, doesn’t
know at this point what she will run in the state postseason
meets.
“I was a little bit more nervous than usual as I know
what to expect in the 800, 1,000 and mile, but this race
gave me a lot of confidence in any event knowing that I
have the ability to run a 57, that will help me shave down
my splits in the 800 for sure,” she said. “Yesterday, because
I had no baseline in the event, I just had to do what
my coaches told me to do. No doubt, this meet was the
coolest meet of the year, especially running under the
lights.”

Boys tennis qualifies for tournament
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield boys tennis team (8-1, 6-0
CAL) qualified for the tournament and remained
undefeated in league play Monday
with a 3-2 win at Ipswich. The Pioneers
dropped the top two singles matches, but got
a key win at third singles from Colin Lamusta
(6-1, 6-3) and swept both doubles matches.
Lorenzo Russo and Michael Gentile prevailed
at first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, while Jamil Khodr
and David Gentile won at second doubles,
6-1, 6-2.
“We had a nice celebration on the bus
ride home,” said coach Joe Dunn. Sr. “I
am very happy for our team’s accomplishment,
they have worked hard and
they deserve it.”
St. John’s 3, Lynnfield 2
In an epic battle that took nearly three
and a half hours before the dust finally
settled, the Division 1 powerhouse St.
John’s Prep tennis team was pushed to
the limit by Lynnfield, but the Eagles
survived a serious scare to pull out a win
at the Lynnfield Middle School. The
match ultimately came down to a couple
Pioneer-Prep tennis could be
the start of a beautiful rivalry
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — In what will
truly go down as an instant classic
in the annals of Lynnfield
boys tennis, Friday’s match
against visiting St. John’s Prep
— yes, that St. John’s Prep, a
perennial Division 1 powerhouse
— had all you could hope for in a
match that might be the start of a
new, albeit unlikely, rivalry.
With three Lynnfield players
on the Eagles’ roster, the match
had a homecoming-like feel
for Holy Cross bound Mikey
Prokopis, Carleton Reister and
Jack Schumer.
But once the match started, all
that was put aside, much to the
delight of a vocal (one might say
even raucous at times) crowd of
fans for both teams, who got
their money’s worth in a dogfight
that lasted nearly three
and a half hours before the Prep
walked off a winner.
Lynnfield senior captain and
Roger Williams commit Arlex
Correa described the match
as a “civil war, brother against
brother.”
Lynnfield coach Joe Dunn,
Sr. said that the atmosphere felt
like more like a football game,
with a huge and vocal fan base
crammed around the perimeter
of the middle school courts.
The upstart Division 3 Pioneers
came into the match 8-0 while
the Eagles were 7-1. Despite the
records, on paper it was David
(the Pioneers) against Goliath.
In the end by the time the day
finally wrapped up as darkness
descended and the Eagles had
sweated out a narrow 3-2 win, it
was a win-win for all.
“We have been looking forward
to this match all season,”
said senior captain and Bridgewater
State commit Colin Lamusta,
who prevailed at third
singles in the longest match of
the day (3:24). “We were hungry
to see if our best could take
on their best, and we did that.
Today, it was all about taking
it to the brink and coming back,
that’s what tennis is all about.”
Lamusta did just that. But it
was not easy. Three times, he
had triple-match points only to
squander them, but he fought
off match point in the tie breaker
to win the final two points to
secure the match.
Prokopis, who attended Summer
Street and Lynnfield Middle
School, said being back at
the middle school brought back
a flood of memories.
“It was great being back here
today as I saw so many people I
have not seen in years,” he said. “I
grew up with Colin and a lot of the
other guys, and it was just an incredible
turnout of fans. I flashed
back to being in coach (Craig)
Stone’s after school activities
program, so it was great to come
back and play in my hometown.”
Correa lost his singles match,
but said playing a team like St.
John’s will go a long way as the
Pioneers hit the most challenging
part of their schedule.
“To play a team like St. John’s,
that is basically comprised half
of Lynnfield players and be in
a position to win the match, is a
big step us for us,” he said. “This
Mixed bag
for softball
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield softball team had a Jekyll
and Hyde week, but nonetheless gained
ground, winning two games while dropping
only one to improve to 7-5
The Pioneers’ only loss was at Triton on
Monday and it was a doozy as the Pioneers
lost 17-5 just three days after the Pioneers
won a lopsided contest over Ipswich in six
innings, 17-0.
The good news was Hayley O’Brien
tossed a no-hitter against Ipswich and came
within one batter of a perfect game. She
walked a Tiger in the fourth to spoil her
bid for a perfect game and finished with
11 strikeouts. It was O’Brien’s second nohitter
in two years.
Triton 17, Lynnfield 5
Lynnfield led 2-0 going into the bottom
of the second inning, but it was all Triton
after that. Chloe Shapleigh was 2-for-3
while Reilly Ganter was 1-for-2 with a
2-run single and Jenna Freni was 1-for-2
with a 2-run double. Breanna Serabian was
1-for-3 with and RBI and also scored a run.
“It was a disaster on all accounts, we just
didn’t make plays and just fell apart,” said
coach Peter Marinelli.
Lynnfield 17, Ipswich 0
At Ipswich Friday, the bats were ablaze
for the Pioneers and O’Brien was unhittable
in the circle. She helped her own cause
at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles,
two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor
Chloe Shapleigh was 2-for-4 and scored
Ipswich.
Tringali also had a big day, going 3-for-5
with two doubles and three RBI. Serabian
also had two doubles and finished 2-for-5
with an RBI and three runs scored. Ganter
(2 RBI, 3 runs) and Shapleigh (4 runs) finished
2-for-4.
Lynnfield 7, Amesbury 6
It’s been six years since the Pioneers
(6-4) have beaten the 6-time defending
Baker Division champion, but at home
May 2, the Pioneers’ snapped an 11-game
losing stretch against the Indians with a
walkoff win. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom
of the seventh inning, the Pioneers scored
three runs, the final one courtesy of a
game-winning single by sophomore Jenna
Freni. Freshman Reilly Ganter started the
rally with a long triple. She scored on an
RBI single by Sam Lebruska to make it 6-5.
Jillian Babine drove Ganter home with the
tying run, then Freni hit a line shot back
to the pitcher to drive home pinch runner
Kendall Laconte, running for Babine, with
the game winner.
Hayley O’Brien earned the win in the
circle.
Lynnfield quartet
helping No. Essex
By Anne Marie Tobin
HAVERHILL — The Northern
Essex Community College baseball
team’s quest for a national championship
begins tomorrow against Holyoke
Community College at Trinity Stadium
when the Knights begin their defense of
their National Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) Region 21
championship.
The Knights have won six straight regional
titles and in 2016 made it all the way
to the NJCAA Division III World Series,
where they finished runner-up.
Should the Knights defend their title, they
will advance to the District F Championship
Tournament May 11-13 (TBA). A win
there will punch the Knights’ ticket to the
World Series May 26-31.
As a team, the Knights finished the
season batting .391 as a team. Key to the
Knights’ potent production at the plate this
year is a quartet of former Peabody and
Lynnfield High standouts.
Leading the group is Kyle Hawes, a
2017 Lynnfield High graduate and 2017
Cape Ann League First Team All-Star. The
freshman outfielder was named the NJCAA
Player of the Week after batting .524 for the
week May 16-22. He smacked five extra
base hits, knocked in 16 runs and set NECC
single game records for home runs (3) and
RBI (12), both in an April 18 game against
Mass Bay Community College when he
also hit for the cycle. He followed April
20 with a 3-for-5 (run, RBI) performance
against Quinsigamond, then wrapped up
the week going 2-for-6 with 3 runs and
3 RBI in a doubleheader against UConn
Avery Point on April 22.
Going into Tuesday’s final game of the
season, Hawes posted a batting average of
.429 in 29 games with four home runs, 31
RBI and a team-best 20 walks.
2016 Peabody High graduate and former
Northeastern Conference All-League
player Benjamin Irvine is now in his second
year at Northern Essex. Through 34 games,
he batted .378 in 32 games played with 30
RBI, two home runs and a team-high 48
runs scored.
After starting his college career at
Southern New Hampshire University, 2015
Peabody High graduate Ryan Collins has
also seen significant action at Northern
Essex this season. A member of the 2015
NEC All-League team, the sophomore
shortstop has played in 31 games, posting
a batting average of .383 with 25 RBI with
four home runs.
Spencer Balian’s road to Northern Essex
has been an adventure. The 2016 Lynnfield
High graduate and CAL All-Star started his
collegiate career at American International
College before transferring for a brief stint at
Endicott College.
Bombs away for Pioneers
The Lynnfield baseball team caught home-run fever last week, blasting four home runs over a 3-game stretch. Fernando Gonzalez, left, started the party
with a grand slam in a 6-2 win over Ipswich at home May 2, then Dan Jameson, center, hit a solo shot in an 8-2 win at Manchester-Essex Thursday. Cooper
Marengi got in on the fun Friday night, smashing two 2-run bombs against host Malden in the Pioneers’ 15-4 win.
Girls tennis team rolls to fifth straight win
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield girls tennis team
(7-1) rolled to its fifth straight win
Monday, defeating Ipswich 5-0 at
the middle school.
Emma Rocco and Grace Sokol
won their first varsity match,
taking the second doubles match,
6-0, 6-2. Celeste Joly won her
first career singles match with a
6-0, 7-5 win at third singles.
Alexa Vittiglio bumped up to
first singles and won, 6-0, 6-0,
while Emma Gallucci bumped up
to second singles and won, 6-0,
6-1.
Makayla Maffeo and Clare Yang
picked up the Pioneers’ final point,
winning at first doubles 6-2, 6-3.
“We moved kids up and into
matches that they normally don’t
play, so it was nice for them to
hang in there and have the opportunity
to contribute,” said
Lynnfield coach Craig Stone.
Lynnfield 4, Rockport 1
At Rockport Thursday, the
Pioneers battled through rainy
conditions and swept the singles
matches to seal the victory. The
match was delayed for an hour
and a half so the teams played abbreviated
matches to get the match
in before any more rain could fall.
Elena Moisidis paired with Joly
at first doubles and won her first
varsity match, 4-0, 4-1.
Megan Nevils got off to a slow
start but rallied to come from behind
to take the first singles match
1-4, 4-1 (7-0), while Bella Ferreira
won at second singles, 4-2, 5-3.
Gillian Skelley took the third
singles match, 4-0, 4-1, while
Christina Albano and Nina Dunn
dropped a close one at second
doubles, 4-5, 1-4.
“Megan rebounded into form
and dominated the second set
as well as the tie-breaker,” said
Stone. “Ferreira bumped up to
second singles and was up to
the challenge. She is rapidly becoming
one of the best retrievers
in the game.
“Our team showed its depth
and balance, playing without three
starters, and still came away with
a win.”
