Girls tennis team rolls to fifth straight win<br />

The Lynnfield girls tennis team<br />
(7-1) rolled to its fifth straight win<br />
Monday, defeating Ipswich 5-0 at<br />
the middle school.<br />
Emma Rocco and Grace Sokol<br />
won their first varsity match,<br />
taking the second doubles match,<br />
6-0, 6-2. Celeste Joly won her<br />
first career singles match with a<br />
6-0, 7-5 win at third singles.<br />
Alexa Vittiglio bumped up to<br />
first singles and won, 6-0, 6-0,<br />
while Emma Gallucci bumped up<br />
to second singles and won, 6-0,<br />
6-1.<br />
Makayla Maffeo and Clare Yang<br />
picked up the Pioneers’ final point,<br />
winning at first doubles 6-2, 6-3.<br />
“We moved kids up and into<br />
matches that they normally don’t<br />
play, so it was nice for them to<br />
hang in there and have the opportunity<br />
to contribute,” said<br />
Lynnfield coach Craig Stone.<br />

At Rockport Thursday, the<br />
Pioneers battled through rainy<br />
conditions and swept the singles<br />
matches to seal the victory. The<br />
match was delayed for an hour<br />
and a half so the teams played abbreviated<br />
matches to get the match<br />
in before any more rain could fall.<br />
Elena Moisidis paired with Joly<br />
at first doubles and won her first<br />
varsity match, 4-0, 4-1.<br />
Megan Nevils got off to a slow<br />
start but rallied to come from behind<br />
to take the first singles match<br />
1-4, 4-1 (7-0), while Bella Ferreira<br />
won at second singles, 4-2, 5-3.<br />
Gillian Skelley took the third<br />
singles match, 4-0, 4-1, while<br />
Christina Albano and Nina Dunn<br />
dropped a close one at second<br />
doubles, 4-5, 1-4.<br />
“Megan rebounded into form<br />
and dominated the second set<br />
as well as the tie-breaker,” said<br />
Stone. “Ferreira bumped up to<br />
second singles and was up to<br />
the challenge. She is rapidly becoming<br />
one of the best retrievers<br />
in the game.<br />
“Our team showed its depth<br />
and balance, playing without three<br />
starters, and still came away with<br />
a win.”<br />
