HOME DESIGN requires important considerations
regarding functionality, efficiency and lifestyle.
The Site must be considered when deciding on a house
plan. Often home planners will put the largest/widest house
allowed by zoning bylaws on your lot. Consider directionality,
especially if using passive solar heating.
Traffic routes should be kept short, reducing wasted space.
Avoid routes requiring passage through rooms. Determine
traffic patterns by tracing over the plan with a pencil, following
your daily routines. Time, space and even maintenance
can be saved with efficient design.
Homes have three basic activity zones; sleeping, service and
living areas. Try to keep them separate from each other.
The main entry should lead guests directly to living areas.
Consider visually separating the main entry from the living
area for privacy. First impressions are good impressions.
The Kitchen’s efficiency is optimized when the refrigerator,
range and sink form a 12 to 20 foot “work triangle”. Kitchen
and eating areas should be close.
Living rooms are multi-functional, serving as recreational,
study or occasional dining areas, and situated adjacent to
the entrance and dining room; areas most frequented by
guests.
Bedroom sizes are determined considering bed types and
additional furnishing; have two walls free from doors and
windows to allow a flexible furniture layout.
Bathrooms can be used for dressing, exercising and laundering.
Full bathrooms should be accessible to all bedrooms
and must be minimum 5’-0” x 7’-6” to accommodate all
fixtures.
Stairways, properly sized, average 14 to 16 risers and are at
least 3’-2” wide.
Planning aides to help you design your home can be as
simple as graph paper and pencil or a more complicated
home design computer software.
Remember when choosing or designing your home plan,
there is no perfect plan for everyone. The most important
factor is incorporating your lifestyle into the plan.

Why should I consider replacing my windows?
If your windows are more than 15-20 years old, replacing
them is one of the best ways to increase the energy
efficiency and comfort of your home. Anywhere from 25
to 30 % of your home’s energy costs are lost through the
windows. As well, when the inside surface of the glass gets
below 11 degrees Celsius a room will feel cold. Installing
new energy-efficient windows can greatly decrease your
heating costs and improve your comfort level in your
home.
My windows are only 20 years old, should I look at
replacing them?
Over time, the components of a window will suffer wear
and tear. Seals lose their elasticity and their ability to seal
moisture and cold air out. Hardware wears out and makes
opening and closing the windows more difficult. With
wood windows moisture can get into the wood causing
the components to swell or shrink, making them difficult
to open or close. Windows that are difficult to open or
close or have condensation between the panes of glass
could indicate that it is time to consider replacement
windows.
What are windows made of today?
Window frames can be manufactured from many different
types of materials. These range from hollow vinyl to composite
vinyl, fibreglass, wood, wood-metal clad, vinyl-metal
clad and even aluminum and steel frames.
Many of window replacements these days are done with
hollow vinyl frames. These windows balance energy efficiency,
stability and rigidness. Composite vinyl frames offer
an even more rigid frame and better energy efficiency.
Fibreglass frames are among the strongest, most durable
frames one can find. This allows for some configurations
that other window types cannot provide.
Wood metal clad and vinyl metal clad windows marry
the performance of the vinyl or wood windows with the
durability and strength of metal. European style “tilt-turn”
windows are made of extruded vinyl and steel and are engineered
to allow for some the most energy efficient, sturdy
windows on the market. The size of operating windows
that can be built with these windows is truly astounding.
How do I know if my windows need replacing?
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described
earlier, you should likely start researching your window
replacement options. There is no one-size fits all, cookie-cutter
solution to window replacements.
The age and the style of the home, type of frame, glass &
which Low E coatings all must be discussed. As well, you
may be thinking of updating the look of your home with
new siding or stucco. To find the right solution, all of these
things need to be considered. The first step many people
take is to do an internet search. Places like CMHC and the
Efficient Windows Collaborative have loads of information.
Next you might want to visit window contractor’s showroom
to see what the different options look like. Then you
may have someone come and do an assessment on your
present windows.

It is a well-known fact that the carpet cleaning industry
is rife with unprofessional-ism. So much so, that, in
many circles, when the topic of carpet cleaning comes
up, people will prefer to replace instead of clean just
because their experience with carpet cleaners has far too
often been negative. And far too often it’s because they
don’t even know if their carpet is a candidate for cleaning
because whenever they hired a cleaner in the past, the
results were much less than satisfactory.
There are several reasons for this. But it almost always
comes down to a lack of professionalism on the part of the
carpet cleaner. And primarily, this lack of professionalism
is due to a lack of proper training.
Carpet cleaners? Training? Didn’t think that was available?
Yes, it is. We all know that training and certification
in any industry, and especially the trades (yes, carpet
cleaning is a trade), is a key aspect of what makes a
professional or not. The primary institution in North
America that trains carpet cleaners is the IICRC. This
acronym stands for: Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and
Restoration Certification. I will encourage everyone that’s
looking for a carpet cleaner to check their website.
How can you tell if your cleaner has been trained? Simple.
Ask questions. Are you a professional? What makes you
a professional? Do you have any formal training? Do you
have a certificate from the institution that trained you?
Does this institution actually exist? What equipment do
you use? Why do you use that type of equipment? What
procedures do you use that make you better than your
competitors? Can you look at my carpet and give me an
idea of what to expect? Do you offer any type of warranty?
Do you carry insurance?
So, when hiring a carpet cleaner (or anyone else for that
matter), give the process some thought, and do your
research. Ask as many questions as you can think of, and
if the person on the phone can’t answer your questions
to your satisfaction, look somewhere else. Remember,
you are entrusting that firm with at least a portion of
your investment. If you are happy with the person you’ve
been using, keep using him or her. Not always, but quite
often, you get what you pay for. Higher price does not
always mean higher quality. But if you hire someone that
is properly trained and certified, chances are, you will be
pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Talk about water quality and purity
has expanded not only from
consumption of clean drinking
water, but of cleansing for
the optimal functioning of the
human body. The skin is a vital
organ of the body that absorbs
much through the pores, especially
when they open in a tepid

Tap water includes contamination
of chlorine or chloramines,
which are formed when chlorine
is combined with ammonia as

with copper and zinc, that further
do the work of filtering out
harmful chemicals, and bring
greater balance to the PH of the
