Hydrant flushing is an important preventative maintenance activity, enabling the District to remove sediment or other solids that may collect in the water mains. Flushing also helps to maintain water quality and fire flows in the distribution system. Flushing may result in temporary water discoloration for a short time, which should dissipate after running the cold water until clear. Discoloration may stain laundry, especially white materials. Washing a dark load first is recommended after flushing is completed. If, after flushing, water pressure or volume seems low, residents should clean faucet screens to remove any silt or sediment that may be obstructing water flow. Good morning, and welcome to Lynnfield’s annual Memorial Day celebration. It’s great to see you all here this morning. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Bruce Siegel, and I am Lynnfield’s Veteran’s Services Officer. What does Memorial Day mean to you? It’s a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. We are here today to recognize and honor those that never came home. The brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to serve, protect, and defend our great nation. We collectively share our heartfelt sorrow and gratitude. Each Memorial Day, our nation says, “thank you,” to those who serve, and think – perhaps only momentarily – of those service members and families who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The majority of Americans have had the distinct luxury of never knowing war – what it does to a person, to a family, to a community – and so, for them, Memorial Day is just that: a day. Power Washing. And many more... grief knows no bounds. War is a burden which transcends time and space. Veterans make us humble. They teach us lessons. As heroes, they face death for others with no thought of personal gain or glory. The sacrifices our veterans have made should not be forgotten. With profound respect and admiration, I thank all who have served, and those who continue to serve this great country. This is the cost of war: the price our veterans, service members, and their families have paid for our nation’s freedom. This Memorial Day, we must all remember this cost. Remember our fallen service members and veterans, and remember the families they left behind. Remember the emails home, the prayers whispered, the hearts broken, and the lives cut short. Remember our military caregivers, and remember those among us who continue to battle the invisible wounds of war. Thus, while we celebrate their heroism by gathering here today on Lynnfield Common, I urge you to remember the weight that this day, and every day holds for the Families of the Fallen. As we observe the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, I would like to dedicate today’s celebration to the more than 58,000 patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in that war. Former Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel said; “We are a better, stronger nation today because of the tremendous sacrifices that our Vietnam veterans and their families made for this country, and I’m very proud to be part of that generation.” And finally, I want to thank all of you for coming here today. MAY 31, 2018 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 3 BY LINDSEY RYAN Dedication to education is all in a day’s work for the Lynnfield Athletic Association (LAA) run by President Kristen Shinnick, President-Elect Amy Nardone, Kerrianne Allain, Maria Terris, Anne Mitchell, Jodene Sanford and Eileen Vittiglio. The scholarships are being awarded as a part of the Senior Awards Night at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The LAA scholarship is the largest to be awarded. Over the past 10 years the LAA has donated over $200,000 worth of equipment, uniforms and scholarships to the Lynnfield High School student athletes. The winners of the scholarships will be announced today: Out of 18 applicants, 10 will be accepted. “Our mission is to recognize the role athletics play in the education and development of Lynnfield High School students,” said Shinnick. “We have given out $15,000 in scholarships for the past two years. It’s the highest amount of scholarships awarded to the outgoing senior class. We are doing 10 $1,500 scholarships this year.” The LAA provides financial support to the Lynnfield High School Athletics programs, as well as instilling a sense of school pride in all athletes and the community. The $15,000 the LAA raised for the kids is generated by working long hours at the Snack Shack during games, the 4th of July Road Race and selling the Superfan T-shirts to promote school spirit. If we have the funds we can help them,” said Kerrianne Allain, “It’s great to see all of what we do go back to the kids.” Lynnfield High School has a wide range of athletics all of which at some point will need new equipment, and the LAA is right there on the front lines to help the athletes in whatever they need. “This year we are donating to the new track that they just put in at the middle school to help buy equipment because we’ve never been able to have a full track program or host a track meet,” said Shinnick. “We support what benefits the most amount of kids.” Working the Snack Shack is a Before Get your car looking great this Spring! During a game hungry fans or players will buy snacks, and all of which will be going back to the students. Working the Snack Shack and selling T-shirts isn’t always easy in cold, rainy weather, but the LAA is the student’s biggest fan and they will do anything to ensure the success of the students. “I love being down here in the shack on the weekend you see a Fund Your Future.
