Services <strong>and</strong> Data<br />

Chapter 7 <strong>DICOM</strong> SOPs: Basic<br />

The model of data process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> exchange adopted by <strong>DICOM</strong> is classy <strong>and</strong><br />

elegant; <strong>DICOM</strong> AEs provide services to each other. One <strong>DICOM</strong> entity can<br />

request a service from another, <strong>and</strong> that entity provides service to the first. In<br />

<strong>DICOM</strong> l<strong>in</strong>go, a service-request<strong>in</strong>g AE is viewed as an SCU, <strong>and</strong> a serviceprovid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

AE is viewed as an SCP. In other words, AEs can play SCP or SCU<br />

application roles to communicate with each other (Fig. 33).<br />

As the SCP <strong>and</strong> SCU names suggest, all <strong>DICOM</strong> services are rendered on<br />

the level of <strong>DICOM</strong> Service Classes. Service Classes <strong>in</strong> <strong>DICOM</strong> b<strong>in</strong>d <strong>DICOM</strong><br />

data with data-process<strong>in</strong>g functions. In more strict terms, <strong>DICOM</strong> Service<br />

Class associates one or more <strong>DICOM</strong> IODs with one or more comm<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Consider pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g digital images on film, for example. The <strong>DICOM</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>t Management<br />

Service Class is responsible for pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g (comm<strong>and</strong>) various images<br />

(IODs, such as CT or MR images). Consequently, any <strong>DICOM</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ter can provide<br />

this service (that is, act as a Pr<strong>in</strong>t Management SCP). Any <strong>DICOM</strong> device<br />

send<strong>in</strong>g images to the pr<strong>in</strong>ter requests the service (that is, acts as a Pr<strong>in</strong>t Management<br />

SCU).<br />

In this section, we will become more acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with the structure <strong>and</strong><br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>DICOM</strong> services. I should po<strong>in</strong>t out that while the <strong>DICOM</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

is do<strong>in</strong>g a particularly great job detail<strong>in</strong>g the contents of its services, the<br />
