Further to these main fields of study, the main courses of study in the region were:
Certificate I in Introductory Vocational Education
Course to Develop Knowledge Required to Obtain a Learners Permit
Certificate I in Information Technology
Certificate II in Rural Operations.
Four out of the top ten most-studied courses in the region were at the Certificate II
level or above.
7.3. Supply: Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Apprenticeships/traineeships offer opportunities for anyone of working age to train, study
and earn an income in a wide range of occupations and trades. They are available in
more than 500 occupations and provide nationally recognised training, developed by
industry for industry.
Apprenticeship/traineeship statistics for the Barkly region are presented in Chart 4.84. The
in training numbers are for 31 December each year and the commencements are total
numbers for each calendar year, 2002 - 2007.

In Training Commencements (a)
There were 62 apprentice/trainee commencements in the region in 2007, a
significant decrease of 53% from 133 in 2002.
The region accounted for 2.2% of total commencements in the NT for 2007, which is
down from 5.8% five years ago.
Since 2002, the number of commencements, and students in training, has decreased
steadily. This is opposite to the overall NT trend which has seen a steady increase.
