The number of employed people in the region has fallen by 3.6% since 2001, whereas
for the NT overall there has been employment growth of 4.1% in this period.
4.2. Labour Force and Participation
Chart 4.53 is a graphical representation of the labour force status of the population in the
Katherine region. The percentage unemployed is the percentage of the total population
who are aged 15 years and over, and who are unemployed, and is different to the
unemployment rate shown in the previous table.

Only Katherine sub-region has a participation rate above the NT average.
Elsey Balance sub-region has the highest proportion of unemployed people, with 5%
of the labour force unemployed. Elsey Balance sub-region also has the lowest levels
of employment and participation in the Katherine region.
Labour force participation is lower outside the service centre of Katherine, but the
gap is not as wide as it is in some remote areas of the NT, such as in the Barkly and
East Arnhem regions.
A large proportion of the population, in some areas of the region, are not engaging
with the labour market.
