DO LOOK
at the floor
Alastair Murcott, of Floorpride – Mandeville Street, provides some sage advice on
why we should prioritise flooring when designing our homes.
What innovation have you seen change carpet the most?
The biggest innovation in recent years in New Zealand
has been the advancements in synthetic carpets. Manmade
fibres, like nylon, have come a long way over the past 20
years and now offer superior colour fastness and improved
appearance and ‘touch’ compared to the synthetics of old.
Nylon is still the most popular of the synthetics, but an
increasing variety of polyester and polypropylene carpets
are available now too.
Where does that leave Kiwis’ beloved wool carpet?
There is a touch of irony in the growth of synthetics, as
New Zealand is still considered the finest producer of
carpet wool in the world. Our wool is sought after by
carpet mills from Asia to Europe and North America.
At Floorpride we are still passionate about the virtues
of buying a NZ-made wool carpet, which is also the
most environmentally friendly option. It’s exciting to see
new looks in wool carpets from the leading brands too,
like luxurious loop piles, more textural weaves and
darker colours.
What do you wish people did more when considering
their flooring options?
When building or refurbishing, it would be great if people
made flooring more of a priority in their overall scheme.
The floor is often the largest expanse of colour and inferior
products can cheapen the overall interior look.
Biggest mistake made by first-time buyers?
Sacrificing quality to save money. Finding the budget for
quality floorcoverings pays dividends in the long run.
Laying carpet can be as much of a minefield as selecting it.
What advice can you give us?
The best advice I can give is to deal through established,
reputable dealers who are more likely to employ the
services of quality tradespeople and stand behind their
products and services. We employ our own ‘hand-picked’
wage team of carpet and hard floor installers, supported
by the best sub-contractors. We pre-cut and shape all our
carpets prior to installation, thus guaranteeing a quality and
efficient install with less likelihood of damage to interiors.
