SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday July 11 2018 5 E.coli forces chlorination early • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding PERMANENT chlorination of the Sheffield Waddington water supplies have been fast tracked because of E.coli. A decision was made by the district council in consultation with the Canterbury District Health Board to continue chlorinating the scheme after the E.coli boil notice expired last month. A boil notice was issued on June 7, commencing the temporary chlorination and expired on June 14. The district council previously confirmed it would permanently chlorinate the water supplies this month and August. The decision was a result of pipe breaks, backflow, illegal connections and reservoir failures in the supplies. It received backlash from residents living in the Sheffield, Waddington, Glentunnel, Coalgate and Whitecliffs areas. The district council’s assets manager Murray Washington said the Sheffield Waddington supplies will also be upgraded with UV treatment, additional filtration and chlorine equipment. Work is expected to be completed in September. Waddington resident Casey de Bruin said wasn’t he aware the district council was still chlorinating the water supplies. He said the residents should have been notified and believes when the issue of the E.coli is resolved the chlorination should not be continued. Brian Thompson, who previously organised a public meeting in Glentunnel over the permanent chlorination, said had not had an update from the district council. Email your views to georgia.oconnor@ starmedia.kiwi Providing fire wood for people who can’t afford it THE DISTRICT council is working with a community group to help it supply firewood to those in need. It leases part of a gravel pit at Broadfield near Prebbleton to the Firewood Mission, which uses the space to split and cut the wood to prepare it for delivery. The Firewood Mission, which was set up 17 years ago by Al Fone, delivers firewood to those who can’t afford it, helping keep their households warm during winter. District council acquisitions disposals and leasing manager Rob Allen said a resource consent allows the charity to use part of the pit to prepare the wood. He said it’s fantastic for the district council to give back to a charitable organisation working to help those in need. Last year the Firewood Mission delivered 333 cu m of wood to 111 households. Each household receives three cubic metres. Mr Fone said his team of about 30 volunteers has worked tirelessly felling, splitting, sorting and delivering wood.
