18 Wednesday July 11 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Fruit sales for good cause • By Emily O’Connell FIVE TAI Tapu School pupils have gone fruity to raise funds for a 3D printer. Year 5 and 6 pupils Hugo Arthur, Max Wilson, Oscar Holvey, Louie Garry and Matthew Elliott have raised $1387 through selling fruit boxes. The group, who were mentored by the Garry family, toured MG marketing and were able to advertise the fruit boxes to the school community at a discounted price. The orders were taken and boxes distributed by the group. They followed a business plan and have a detailed spreadsheet to organise costs and buyers. The project was part of the Discover, Attempt, Reflect, Extend programme at Tai Tapu School. The DARE programme, which started three years ago, allows pupils to design a learning project of their choice in small groups. The project needs to be a new invention, something they can adapt and improve or something which addresses a need within the school, community or is designed to give service to others. Pupils use a design thinking process and each stage of their project is mentored by a teacher. The money will go towards a 3D printer to the school. their “excellent” promotion and advertising. “The school is very proud of their efforts and many students will benefit for the use of the printer,” she said. One of the pupils has registered the school for selling STEAM Kits which will be a further fundraiser. The 3D printer, which the group is hoping to buy next term, will be used for inventor workshops and DARE projects. Other DARE groups have raised money for welcome packs and soft toys for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, made donations to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Canterbury and the Christchurch City Mission, created carpentry tables for junior pupils and made games for the classroom. The schools wants to thank Dole for the bananas and pineapples it supplied and the MG Marketing sales team for their fantastic pricing.
