The presence of last year’s BTC Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Albert
The Fat (Magic Albert) as well as Buffering’s stakeswinning
stablemate Woorim (Show A Heart) will only make the three-yearold’s
task tougher.
Buffering raced among the better three-year-olds in the spring. The
gelding won the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick
in october before he finished a narrow second to Celts (Lonhro) in
the Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) later that month.
Buffering finished fourth to exciting colt Star Witness (Starcraft) in
“Buffering has shown that he is a quality horse,” Heathcote said.
“He did everything right last campaign and he was quite tough,
“Buffering has won on a heavy (9) and he did carry 59kg. He has
Heathcote said Buffering suffered a slight setback with a foot
abscess “about three or four weeks ago” but the son of Mossman
had to run in the Victory Stakes to keep his winter program on
LINCOLN FARM FEES
Lincoln Farm released its 2011 fees yesterday with principal
Nick posa stating he has recognised the prevailing sentiment
concerning Australian nomination prices by significantly reducing
the service fees of Ready’s image (USA) and Krupt for the 2011
breeding season.
in his second stud season of operation on his recently acquired
Blandford property, posa has set Ready’s image (USA) at an
advertised fee of $6,600 (inc GST), down from $11,000 in 2010,
for his third southern hemisphere breeding season.
Juvenile Group winner Krupt (Flying Spur) will stand at $5,500 (inc
GST) - down from $8,800, in his second season at stud.
Despite the reduction in fees posa is upbeat about the coming
season. “The respective connections of Ready’s image and Krupt
are absolutely determined to give both stallions every chance to
The 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock
Sale (2-4 May) will see 218 lots being offered on an unreserved
basis, with unreserved drafts from Goodwood Stud, The oaks
Stud and Waikato Stud, in addition to Dormello Stud’s Unreserved
Dispersal Sale of 119 horses.
NZB Co-Managing Director Andrew Seabrook says these offerings
give buyers confidence to bid and buy.
“A number of studs have demonstrated at previous May Sales
that by offering their stock for genuine unreserved sale they
have attracted some very good demand,” says NZB Co-Managing
Director Andrew Seabrook. “Buyers can bid and buy with
confidence, benefitting both buyer and seller, and it means there
will be some great opportunities for some very savvy purchasing
next week.”
Nick and Anne-Marie King of Brighthill Farm reckon their
consignment for next week’s National Weanling Sale is as good as
they have ever taken to Karaka. “i really do hope buyers will come
and have a close look at our horses this year,” Nick King said on
Tuesday. “We’ve got a terrific cross-section of sires represented
and the majority of our horses have had x-rays done; these are
genuine pinhook opportunities.”
Weanlings by Benicio, Guillotine, High Chaparral, iffraaj (2), Keeper,
No Excuse Needed, patapan (2), perfectly Ready (2), Thorn park
and Towkay make up the 13-strong offering from Brighthill Farm
this year.
“The High Chaparral half-brother to Double Barrell (Lot 125) is a
star and i have no doubt that buyers will be impressed with the
two iffraaj colts (Lots 3 & 265),” said King. “Really though, it’s
unfair to single any horses out as it’s a great consignment across
succeed and if it means making a sizeable cut from last year’s
fees, then so be it,” posa said yesterday.
“The timing of Ready’s image’s reduction could hardly be better for
local broodmare owners. The More Than Ready breed continues to
thrive in Australia and clearly the young stallion has a very bright
future in the United States going on his very pleasing weanling
sale results.
“We honestly thought that Krupt was one of the best priced
stallions commencing stud duties in 2010. However, his new fee
for 2011 makes him unbelievable value.”
After Dormello Stud, Waikato Stud has the largest offering with 30
weanlings and 16 broodmares set to go under the auctioneer’s
hammer and Waikato Stud’s owner Garry Chittick says the May
Sale is an important part of their operation.
“Waikato Stud has had a tradition of selling on an unreserved
basis in the May Sale for the last three or four years. We are
a large operation and we retain only the numbers that we can
handle.
“We go through this numbers process each year and, as a result,
we annually present a selection of individuals who are genuinely
offered for sale on an unreserved basis.
“our draft this year has some nice horses available for buyers
and they are all by successful stallions.”
Rex Fell’s Goodwood Stud also has a large unreserved offering of
32 horses entered in the 2011 May Sale. The home of the sireson
of Stravinsky in Chinese Dragon, the Stud will be offering 18
With yearlings selling up to NZ$80,000 at this year’s Karaka
premier Sale, Chinese Dragon’s progeny were well received by the
Karaka Million winning trainer Lisa Latta.
11 mares in foal to Chinese Dragon, and a broken-in bay filly
close eye on the sale as it will see the first progeny by their young
APQEII CUP DRAW GIVES MIXED FORTUNE TO FAVOURITES
The draw for the Audemars piguet Queen Elizabeth ii Cup (Gr
1, 2000m) is of more significance than most because, in the
words of Darren Beadman, “The 2000m start is the trickiest at
Sha Tin because the first turn comes so early.”
Beadman himself will have been more or less content with the
barrier 9 for his mount, two-time QEii Cup winner Viva pataca
(Marju), as this habitual hold-up horse would not have been
involved in any jostling for early position in any case. Viva
pataca’s trainer John Moore, anxious not to put any pressure of
expectation on the veteran champion, said: “He probably has
a chance from a place point of view, although i’d like to think
he’ll be right up there at the finish.”
if there is any charge for the lead at the first turn it looks most
likely to be led by the Moore-trained front-runner Mighty High
(peintre Celebre), as the trainer said of him: “i would think he’ll
be going forward, as he has previously raced well when ridden
in a forward position.”
in that case Mighty High could be doing some early work to
cross from barrier 13. of Moore’s other two runners, Destined
For Glory (Azamour) drew 1 and irian (Tertullian) barrier 8: the
latter perhaps a difficult gate for the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1,
2000m) runner-up if Brett prebble is looking to slot in not too
far back. “if irian can reproduce his run behind Snow Fairy in
December he’s got to be the one to beat.” Moore asserted and
described Destined For Glory as, “The dark horse in the race.”
He had no doubt however that the main threat to his quartet is
Ambitious Dragon (pins). Connections of the Hong Kong Derby
(HK Gr 1, 2000m) winner will have been less than thrilled to
have drawn wide in 12, but bearing in mind that the son of
pins was good enough to overcome 14 in the Derby, his genial
owner Johnson Lam had no trouble continuing to smile. “My
horse is very well,” he said when interviewed on stage “but
this is the best opposition he has met so i must not be overconfident.”
other late finishers who may be going back include Dubai Duty
Free (Gr 1, 18000m) third Wigmore Hall (High Chaparral) and
the Tony Cruz-trained Hong Kong Gold Cup (HK Gr 1, 2000m)
Friday, April 29th, 2011 6
winner California Memory (Highest Honor). Trainer Michael
Bell’s assistant Gillian Dolman, who has been riding Wigmore
Hall in all his work, was relaxed about his draw of 10. “He’s a
slow starter and he’s going to be held up anyway,” she said.
“So perhaps it doesn’t make a great deal of difference.”
Tony Cruz revealed that the brilliant California Memory, who
actually delivered a faster final quarter in the Gold Cup than
Snow Fairy (intikhab) had in the CxHK Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) itself,
had suffered from a foot abscess a couple of weeks ago. “But
we’ve got rid of that. He’s in excellent condition now, and it
didn’t really hold up his work. if he runs well on Sunday and
pulls up well, we’re planning to go on to Singapore (for the
Singapore Airlines international Cup). And Matthew (Chadwick)
will ride him in both races as the owners were very pleased with
his ride last time.”
Chadwick, who made the draw on behalf of connections, drew
11, but Cruz was unperturbed. “We drew 12 in the Gold Cup
and now 11 here. So we’ll be riding the same way - out the back
door. i see the pace as being fairly similar to his last race. it’s
all good, i’m very happy with him.”
Chadwick, riding in only his second international Group 1 after
his ride on Beauty Flash (Golan) in the Champions Mile (Gr 1,
1600m) last year and bidding to become the first local rider
to win one at home, echoed the trainer’s opinion. “The draw’s
oK,” he said. “We would settle back anyway. it’s great to have
a ride in a race like this, and an extra bonus to be on one with
a really good chance of winning.”
if there were any prizes for the happiest smiles after the draw
though, they would probably have gone to joint owner Mrs Cedric
Amm, who confessed to extreme nervousness before drawing
2 for the Mike de Kock challenger River Jetez (Jet Master), and
Edmond Siu Kim ping who said: “it was very good to draw 3 for
Semos.”
And the pair were joined in their contentment by Herman Brown,
trainer of Gitano Hernando (Hernando), who felt 6 was perfect
for his horse. “it means we won’t be tight on the rail and
we don’t have to do one thing or the other. We can go either
forward or back according to how the race is run. i’m very, very
happy with that.”
BETTER BE THE ONE BACK FOR LION CITY CUP
While all attention has been on Rocket Man (Viscount) for his
comeback to Singapore racing in Sunday’s $500,000 Lion City
Cup (Sing Gr 1) over 1200m, Better Be The one (More Than
Ready) (formerly Common interest) is somewhat the forgotten
horse, writes Craig Brennan.
in deserving all the fanfare for Rocket Man’s breakthrough
international Group 1 victory in Dubai last month, Better Be
The one was deserving of some of the hype following his
narrow third placing on the same night.
Whereas Rocket Man was successful in the US$2 million
Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr 1) over 1200m, Better Be The one
ran the race of his life in finishing third to J J The Jetplane
(Jet Master) in the US$1 million Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 2) over the
straight 1000m course on 26 March.
While the chances appear slim of Better Be The one accounting
for Rocket Man in Sunday’s race, trainer Michael Freedman is
confident he has the gelding in good order.
Both Rocket Man and Better Be The one returned from Dubai
on the same flight before spending the next two weeks in
quarantine.
While Rocket Man has trialled publically, scoring an easy trial
victory on 21 April, Better Be The one has been given an easier
time for his return to Singapore racing.
Trackwork and a jumpout out last Saturday has Better Be The
one on the fresh side as he sets out to tackle Rocket Man and
four other opponents on Sunday.
Better Be The one SiNGApoRE TURF CLUB
“All we can do is our best and just chase Rocket Man around,”
said Freedman.
“He seems in pretty good order and has done well since his
return.
“i would say he’s in similar form to what he was before he left
for Dubai.
“We’ve kept him as fresh as we can for this race as i think
that’s the way he races best.”
Friday, April 29th, 2011 7
Following Sunday’s race it will be on to the KrisFlyer international
Sprint (Gr 1) over 1200m on 22 May which was to also have
seen a rematch with J J The Jet plane.
However that rematch, and the rematch between Rocket Man
and his conqueror from the Hong Kong international Sprint
last December, is off with news that the South African-trained
sprinter has gone amiss.
J J The Jet plane suffered a core lesion of his medial lower
suspensory of his near foreleg and while the injury is regarded
as short to medium term connections have decided not to risk
the sprinter and will instead return to South Africa and allow
the gelding to recuperate.
Following his third placing to J J The Jet plane, Freedman
received an invitation from Nick Smith, Head of Communications
and international Racing of Ascot in England, for Better Be The
one to head to the Royal Ascot meeting in June.
After enjoying the Dubai experience and with Better Be The one
So often in racing history, good horses can be supremely talented
yet for all that, have a nemesis. Think Tulloch and prince Darius,
Affirmed and Alydar, i could go on but hopefully you have got the
point.
Hay List (Statue of Liberty) is clearly a high-class sprinter with
the misfortune to be in the same era as Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).
Last Saturday, with the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) looking
pretty much at his mercy in the absence of Black Caviar, Hay List
produced a career best with a really dominant win in his first test
at 1400m and in truly awful conditions.
Given the circumstances Hay List had two ready made excuses if
he had been beaten. instead he simply belted his rivals, clear into
the straight and then quickening further clear with Hinchinbrook
(Fastnet Rock), the three-year-old running an excellent race, in
second with Group 1 winners Heart of Dreams (Show A Heart)
and Melito (Redoute’s Choice) further behind.
We have increased Hay List’s rating to 126 for this win and we
can now only hope that the weather can be kinder to Queensland.
Ghozi (Catbird) in a Kranji Stakes A over 1200m on 6 February
before his third placing behind J J The Jet plane.
After a successful career in Australia where he raced as
Common interest before joining Freedman in Singapore, Better
Be The one has had just the five starts for the J Man Stable,
collecting around $300,000 in prizemoney.
ANZ OLDeR HORse FORM
HAY LIST PRODUCES CAREER BEST RUN IN ALL-AGED VICTORY
if Hay List can get to the BTC Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) in this level
of form then he might well give Black Caviar something to think
about.
Kingdom of Fife (Kingmambo) (120) has won both his starts in
Australia, both at Group level. if his win in the Royal parma Stakes
(Gr 3, 1600m) at 100/1 was regarded as a shock, there was no
element of doubt about his Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
defeat of dual Group 1 winner Sacred Choice (Choisir).
Kingdom of Fife did most of his racing at a mile and a quarter in
England with stakes form at a mile and a half so there is every
reason to suspect he will get to that distance in Australia and it
will certainly be interesting to see how he progresses.
Stand To Gain (Hawk Wing) (114) out-slogged his rivals to win a
Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) that was effectively a war of attrition
under the conditions. This was a major step up in form for the
former English runner but he was always going forward in a race
where several horses were clearly unable to perform to their best
under the conditions.
