NORTHERN EXPOSURE
AS THIS EDITION GOES TO PRINT
THE QHA ARE NOW OFF AND
RUNNING IN THE JUDGING
FOR THE ANNUAL AWARDS FOR
EXCELLENCE.
It has been a pleasure getting out to see so many members this month and to get
their feedback on how the QHA is helping them in their local areas.
This month started with our Accommodation members in Cairns. As the winter
winds started down south, I am thoroughly convinced our northern members are
in God’s own country! Whilst there have been “up and down” results for some
members, the growth of the tourism offering in the far north is nothing short of
spectacular.
Our second Pubs, Pots and Profits seminar ran in Rockhampton last month as
well, with members from both near and far attending. Again, it is pleasing to
see central Queensland starting to rebound as economic conditions slowly turn
around. Both coastal and inland venues were well represented and show how
these job-creating businesses truly are the lifeblood of so many communities.
For the 50 or so members that attended, there were plenty of “take-away” gems
including tips on social media and controlling food costs, with of course, plenty of
information swapped between members.
Finally, as this edition goes to print, the QHA are off and running with judging for
the annual Awards for Excellence. Once again thanks for all the hard work on the
entries. It will be an enormous task to split the fantastic venues and properties
across the state. We look forward to announcing the finalists and welcoming you
all at the Awards Night on October 8th!
NEWS
DEDICATED HOTELIER, BOLD VISIONARY
With great sadness, the QHA acknowledges the recent
passing of Gary Balkin – Queensland entrepreneurial
legend, hotelier and Honourary Life Member of the
Association.
Gary was awarded the honour in recognition of his
distinguished service to the QHA as Committeeman,
Secretary Treasurer, Vice-president and Chairman of
the Judges Panel of the QHA Awards for Excellence
since their inception.
As a visionary businessman and mentor, Gary
launched some bold enterprises in the 1980s
that helped mark Brisbane’s coming-of-age as
a metropolitan centre as dynamic as Sydney or
Melbourne.
Inspired by the city’s riviera setting, Gary developed
a couple of hospitality driven properties along the
Brisbane waterfront including a floating seafood
restaurant, Bonaparte’s Afloat, and the iconic
Kookaburra Queen paddle steamers that he built
for Expo 88.
However, the city will remember Gary Balkin most
fondly as one of the four “founding fathers” of the
NRL’s Brisbane Broncos in 1988.
Together with business partners Barry Maranta, Steve
Williams and the late Paul Morgan, Gary embarked on
this venture out of a love of the game (in 1964 he’d
been the top try scorer in the Brisbane Rugby League)
and a determination to cement Queensland’s place as
NSW’s 13-man nemesis on the back of Sate of Origin.
This shared dream was instantly realised when the
Broncos trounced reigning premiers Manly 44-10 in
the club’s thrilling inaugural match.
Speaking of his career recently, Gary said he was
“… still proud of the Kookaburra Queens. I built them
to last a long time. I loved it all – the hotels,
the restaurants … the Broncos. I’ve absolutely no
regrets.”
AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST BEER
LAUNCH IN 10 YEARS
REPORTED RECORD-BREAKING LAUNCH VOLUME HAS
SEEN IRON JACK BECOME AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST BEER
LAUNCH OF THE LAST DECADE.
Since its launch in September 2017, Iron Jack has
reportedly sold over 15 million litres, more volume
over the same period than established beer brands
like Crown Lager, Stella Artois and James Squire 50
Lashes. It is already one of the most available beer
brands in the country – distributed in over 5,000 bottle
shops and 2,000 pubs across Australia.
Lion’s Contemporary Portfolio Manager, Amy Darvill,
says the early signs are that the beer is connecting well
with consumers.
“When we launched Iron Jack, we wanted to make
a beer for hard working, down to earth Aussie
blokes. Blokes who love their dogs and the outdoors.
Their initial reaction to the beer has been really
encouraging,” Amy said.
A willingness amongst customers to trial Iron Jack is
also a direct result of where the brand has focussed its
investment.
“We made an early decision to make sure we
supported our customers with good trial mechanics
to get the beer in people’s hands, because we know
once this happens the beer stands up on its own.”
Amy says Lion has doubled the media spend behind
Iron Jack in order to further drive awareness of the
brand.
“We’ve had a really great launch but we know it’s
only early days and we need to keep up the positive
momentum. Our original media strategy was to start
regional and work our way in towards metro areas. But
given the strong start we’ve significantly increased our
media spend to include all capital cities, as well as still
supporting regional areas.”
THE BALFOUR KITCHEN
SPICES IT UP
QHA REVIEW | 10
The Balfour Kitchen, located at Spicers Balfour
Hotel in Brisbane’s New Farm, has launched its new
Vietnamese-inspired menu this month, with award
winning Executive Chef Dan Jarrett at the helm of the
revitalised restaurant offering.
Dan, who has worked with Spicers Retreats since
2010, has been integral in the growth of the Group’s
culinary story, having been involved in the launch of
The Long Apron at Spicers Clovelly and, currently,
operating as Head Chef at multi award winning The
Tamarind, at Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny.
“The Balfour Kitchen is set in such a beautiful location,
and the style of food we are offering on our new
menu has been carefully curated to align with this
environment – it is so unique to the area, and we are
beyond excited to welcome people in for a meal,” Dan
said.
Following his success with the cross-border Asian
dining experience at The Tamarind, Dan said there
was a natural inclination to adapt The Balfour Kitchen’s
menu when the opportunity presented itself.
“There have been several discussions over the years
about the opportunity of having a second Asian-style
restaurant under the Spicers umbrella, but we didn’t
want a carbon copy of The Tamarind,” he said.
“The Balfour Kitchen offers a Vietnamese twist with
a hint of French, and I’m confident it will be a hit with
locals and visitors.”
Vietnamese flavours are found throughout the menu
including Vietnamese beef tartare, fermented tofu
and preserved Chinese olive, yolk, puffed rice paper.
The French hint can be seen in dishes such as the
Vietnamese coffee brulee, lotus tea meringue, fried
cacao truffles with chilli chocolate.
Working alongside Dan to create the menu was a team
of talented in-house Chefs, who provided their insights
into sourcing local ingredients and fresh thinking for
the Queensland climate.
“We’ve put so much thought into each dish on the
menu and have made a conscious effort to make use
of lots of fresh vegetables and herbs, with almost half
of our menu including vegan and vegetarian options,”
he added.
Brisbane locals and in-house guests are tipped to be
frequent visitors at the new and improved restaurant
offering, which will open seven days a week for
breakfast, brunch and high tea, with dinner open
Tuesday to Friday from 5:30pm till late.
“The Balfour Kitchen is ideal for people living in the
area wanting a mid-week meal, and for our in-house
guests that have the luxury of enjoying a drink at our
rooftop bar before going downstairs for an Asianinspired
dish,” Dan said.
“It’s a simple formula… the food has to taste great,
have a real wow factor and the service in which
we pride ourselves on has to be genuine and real,”
Spicers Retreats Managing Director David Assef said.
“Yes the music, lighting and setting play a part but
ultimately the food has to speak for itself matched with
knowledgeable, suggestive and sincere service.”

KENO MEGA MILLIONS
JACKPOT NUDGES
RECORD HIGH OF
$7.5 MILLION
If your customers dream big then there’s never been a
better time for them to play Keno.
The Keno Mega Millions Play 10 jackpot is nudging
closer to the highest ever Keno cash prize in Australian
history. It’s currently sitting on just over $7 million!
The biggest Keno jackpot to be won was $7.5 million
back in 1994.
Mega Millions is continuing to radiate in the Sunshine
State following its successful statewide launch on 12
March. More than $5 million in prize money has been
given away to Queenslanders so far, with turnover of
$8.8 million.
Queensland hotel customers have certainly secured
their slice of the winning action. Three pub patrons
have come within just one number of winning the
coveted Play 10, winning $11,000 each.
The first player bought their ticket at Rudd’s Pub in
Nobby, south of Toowoomba, the second played at
Fitzy’s Loganholme, while the third was won at the
Railway Hotel, Imbil.
Hotel patrons have also won five of the six Mega
Millions Play 7 jackpots to date and the only Play 5
jackpot, taking home combined prize money totalling
more than $90,000. So far, tavern customers have
held the key to unlocking the jackpots, with customers
winning at Kirwan, Smithfield, Tully Heads, Bay Central,
Dog and Parrot, and North Shore Taverns.
To top it off, the first ever 8 Spot jackpot in Queensland
was won on 9 May. The $148,494 cash prize was won
by a 55 year-old mum from Warner who works for a
not for profit organisation in Brisbane.
While it’s early days, hotels, pubs and taverns around
the state are giving Mega Millions the thumbs up,
both in terms of a unique point of difference that will
enhance customers’ on-premise experience and the
opportunities for increasing turnover from Keno.
So, make sure your customers know they’ve got a
shot to win the biggest jackpot in Keno history.
A NEW 50 TAP GASTRO - PUB & BREWERY
OPENS ON CAIRNS WATERFRONT
QHA REVIEW | 12
A state-of-the-art craft brewery, gastro-pub and
versatile events space for 600 seated guests are
features of Cairns’ newest world-class, waterfront
destination.
Located within the heritage-listed Shed 2 of Cairns
Cruise Liner Terminal, the multi-million-dollar
Hemingway’s Brewery Cairns Wharf integrates cuttingedge
design while retaining the building’s original
features that date back to the early 1900s.
Occupying an expansive 1400 square metres,
Hemingway’s Brewery Cairns Wharf is Queensland’s
largest craft brewery north of Brisbane and one of
Australia’s largest gastro pubs.
While preserving the site’s historic architecture, the
venue’s brewery provides a dramatic statement,
defining the space with its Canadian-manufactured
brewing system that incorporates a four-vessel
brew house and eight, 6-metre high, stainless-steel
fermentation and brite beer tanks. Informative brewery
tours will be operated that invite patrons to observe
and learn about the craft brewing process.
Alongside the brewery Hemingway’s Cairns Wharf
includes an impressive 20-metre, timber topped bar
and a second outdoor bar with a total of 50 taps. For
craft beer lovers, Hemingway’s Brewery Cairns is set
to become a Mecca, serving 20 brands of craft beer,
including a broad range of Hemingway’s signature ales
brewed on-premise.
Hemingway’s Brewery co founders Tony Fyfe and
Craig Parsell began their foray into craft brewing and
gastro pubs when they opened their first Hemingway’s
Brewery at Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port
Douglas in July 2016. Soon after they focussed their
sights on expansion, and with the purpose of bringing
their winning formula to Cairns, negotiated a lease
agreement with Ports North and began work on the
heritage-listed Shed 2 at Cairns waterfront, which has
been 18 months in its development.
“What started as an appreciation of craft beer and its
fresh-is-best authenticity has become something far
bigger and we look forward to sharing it with others.
“Hemingway’s is as much about prioritising the local
community as it is about enjoyment and the winning
combination of great beer and great food in a great
location,” Tony said.
Coinciding with this weekend’s opening, Hemingway’s
Brewery Cairns will launch its Hop Heads membership
program for local residents and craft beer enthusiasts.

HUGE BENEFITS FOR
full service kitchen and a dedicated events space
catering for the MICE industry and weddings.
Open for lunch and dinner, the venue’s restaurant
will serve quality gastro-pub style food made
predominantly from locally sourced ingredients and
a paddock-to-plate philosophy while a providore will
showcase some of the region’s craft produce.
“Hemingway’s Brewery aims to build and operate the
best gastro brew pubs in the country with a focus
on brewing great craft beer which is a growing trend
based on an amazing taste – that is not only unfiltered,
unpasteurised and preservative free - but made from
just four key ingredients; yeast, hops, base malts and
water,” he said.
Hemingway’s Brewery, under the guidance of head
line-up that includes Doug’s Courage IPA
(recently won a medal at the Australian International
Beer Awards) and top selling pilsner, The Prospector
BEACHSIDE BITCOIN
THE BEACHSIDE COMMUNITY OF AGNES WATER AND
1770 HAS RECENTLY EMBRACED THE IDEA OF BEING
A DIGITAL CURRENCY FRIENDLY TOWN.
What this basically means is that someone can pay for
their entire holiday and all goods and services while
they are in Agnes Water using Bitcoin or any number of
the digital currencies that are currently on the market.
According to Agnes Water Tavern, General Manager
Jack Michelmore, “The general consensus around
town is that because it has been largely successful
overseas in countries like Japan and the like we
might be able to attract more tourist to town who
like using digital currencies and also to create a
point of difference for Agnes and 1770 as a holiday
destination.”
Reportedly the team from TravelByBit officially
launched Agnes Water and 1770 as the only digital
currency town in Australia. It would also appear the
Agnes Water Tavern is the first Pub in Queensland to
embrace and accept digital currency as payment.
Visitors to Agnes Water and 1770 can use digital
currency to purchase anything from accommodation
through to a beer over the bar.
EXPLORING
MODERNISM
AS MID-CENTURY ARCHITECTURE MAKES A
COMEBACK TO MODERN-DAY DESIGN, ONE BUILDING
IN TOOWOOMBA WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME AND HAS
STAYED ON TREND FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS.
THE BURKE AND WILLS HOTEL ON RUTHVEN STREET
IN TOOWOOMBA WAS BUILT IN 1957 AND DESIGNED
BY AN INFLUENTIAL MODERNIST AND ACCLAIMED
AUSTRIAN ARCHITECT, KARL LANGER.
Then known as Lennon’s Hotel, the seven-storey
building was the tallest building in Toowoomba at the
time and was considered quite innovative, highlighting
the ambition of 1950s architecture. The rooms were
considered luxurious with large windows, bathroom a
telephone, as well as its own colour scheme thanks
to the architect’s wife, Gertrude Langer. It offered an
exclusive service to its guests where those telephones
had direct connections to several shops including a
hairdresser and beauty salon which were attached to
the hotel on the ground floor, so guests could place
their orders easily.
Over the decades however, the hotel changed hands
and changed names. Under the prressent ownership
it is affectionately known as the Burke and Wills Hotel.
FEATURE
AS WE STARTED TO LOOK AT WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE, IT EXPANDED GREATLY INCLUDING THE GROUND
AND FIRST FLOORS WHICH WERE PROBABLY LAST TOUCHED IN THE 1970s.
Adding to their portfolio of hotels, the Hakfoort
Group purchased the hotel from Mercure in 2004 as
a declining business and did a small refurbishment
before it reopened its doors in 2005. However the
hotel was still in need of work and the Burke and Wills
Hotel shut its doors for just under one year while a
major refurbishment took place.
This latest refurbishment was four years in the planning
followed by 11 months of construction, reopening just
two months ago in May.
“How we came to this refurbishment, was a hangover
of that original refurbishment process,” Hakfoort Group
director, Albert Hakfoort said.
“In 2004 when they did that refurb of the
accommodation tower, not only has a lot of things
changed technology wise, but we were using analogue
televisions then and we use digital TVs now. There was
no wifi, there was barely internet back in those days.”
The ground and first floors were never included in the
2004 renovation processes and Albert said both had
suffered greatly as a result. Ten years on, the hotel
group was looking to update their soft furnishings such
as carpets, curtains, beds and linens; and suddenly
the scope of work became larger than just furnishings.
“As we started to look at what needed to be done, it
expanded greatly including the ground and first floors
which were probably last touched in the 1970s.
“The scope started to get away from us, so we
thought rather than doing another half job, we’d do a
full job,” Albert said.
The project wasn’t without its hurdles, one of which
included a battle with a state heritage listing application
at the same time as the company’s development
application, thus adding a year to the planning and
development process. With a local heritage listing,
Albert said the building was protected because
architect, Karl Langer was a notable person within the
Queensland architectural landscape, however internally
there was freedom and flexibility to renovate.
And so the refurbishment began and accepting the
challenge to transform the dated hotel into a modern
midcentury structure was the owner and director of
award-winning architects Darren S Dickfos Architects
Pty Ltd.
Darren’s brief seemed relatively simple as the
development approval (DA) was already in place.
FEATURE
DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS, WORKERS UNCOVERED THE ORIGINAL CELLAR OF THE EXCHANGE
HOTEL, THE ORIGINAL HOTEL THAT WAS BUILT ON THIS IN 1863.
QHA REVIEW | 20
“We were to take the DA drawings and give them
hospitality feel and a five-star look about the place,”
Darren said.
But like most refurbishments in older buildings, Darren
uncovered plenty of obstacles along the way.
“It was quite a well thought of building for 1957. We
had to keep the tower or the refurbishment of the
external tower in a sympathetic manner to the original
structure, so while we modernised it the lines and
angles of the facade were maintained.
“It was originally brick work and because it was such
a special example of modernist architecture, we didn’t
want to take away from that so that’s why those
external lines have been maintained because they are
an important part of it,” Darren said.
“Given it was built in 1957 there were a lot of strange
things we found, such as some really uneven floors,
the lift tower was out of plumb, and there was a lot of
asbestos.
“A lot of the fire rating and fire safety systems had
to be upgraded, and there were different pieces that
had been added on over the years so there was
problems with floor slabs collapsing and little things

FEATURE
like that. There were a few dramas to overcome and
problems to solve but the building was 60 years old,”
Darren said.
During the construction process, workers uncovered
the original cellar of the Exchange Hotel, the original
hotel that was built on this site in 1863, prior to its
demolition in 1956 which made way for what is
now the Burke and Wills Hotel. Keen to preserve an
historical structure, Albert wanted to salvage the cellar,
however it was hidden beneath approximately 190
cubic metres of rubble that had been contaminated
with asbestos products from previous demolitions.
“The footings, the walls, everything was there, however
it was full of rubble and asbestos containing material.
We were scrambling to see if we could incorporate
this heritage feature into the bar, but it was too shallow
from the stairs to be used reasonably we couldn‘t
because of the contamination and the work involved,”
Albert explained.
While the cellar could not be saved, almost every other
area throughout the hotel both internally and externally
was refurbished and one of the main aspects to
modernising the building was the addition of a
curtain wall - a non-structural covering to keep the
weather out.
“We really needed to give it a facelift, the building really
looked old, with the brick window sills and the old
paint job, so we wanted to modernise the feel of it
and that meant putting a curtain wall on both sides,”
Albert said.
“It has not only added an aesthetically pleasing finish
but it is also cleaner, modernised, looks nicer and brings
insulation properties that weren’t there from the 1950s
to nowadays, so there were a lot of benefits from doing
that and I think it has modernised that property.”
Internally, Darren explained the rooms were to
have a luxurious feel while taking the hotel in a new
direction by appealing to the leisure traveller and
accommodating families with children.
In order to achieve this, the previous 92 rooms were
reduced to 82 in order to create 16 luxury king suites
as well as nine adjoining rooms ideal for families
with children.
“There are 19 five-star suites and executive suites
which include features such as TV recessed into the
bathroom wall so you can watch the TV while you’re in
the bath,” Darren said.
“The rooms had to be pretty special, because they
have a good occupancy from out of towners, so the
rooms had to be perfect and likewise the foyer.”
Offering opulent marble columns, a gold revolving
door, chandeliers and an expansive reception desk
behind which sits a four-metre long, two-way tropical
fish tank, the foyer makes a statement for when guests
arrive. Albert said he wanted that “wow” factor not
often found in a country town.
A statement chandelier with a petal featured at
its centre was custom made and chosen for its
representation of Toowoomba’s iconic Spring Carnival.
“It is a delicate balance between something classical
and something that’s modernist to tie in with the
tower building. The gaming room is a brand new addon
building, it was done in a black-faced brickwork
with white grouting so it stood out, but is still quite
modernist in its appearance externally,” Darren said.
Burke and Wills offer four function areas for groups of
all sizes from 15 to 250 and three of those rooms pay
homage to Toowoomba’s history with the Karl Langer
room named after the building’s original architect,
the Allan Cunningham room named after the English
botanist and explorer, and Lennon’s room which is
named after the hotel’s original name from 1957.
The hotel now appeals to the wedding market with so
many options available and this latest refurbishment
has not only provided an old building with a new look,
it has enabled the Burke and Wills hotel to move
forward into the future with a new direction appealing
to everyone.

SUPERANNUATION with Brendan O’Farrell
SUPER ACCESS TO BE MORE AVAILABLE
QHA REVIEW | 24
This month, I wanted to talk about the Government’s
strategy to help people break into the housing market
– the First Home Super Saver (FHSS) scheme. Since
announcing the legislation, the Government has released
further details about how the process works. I thought it
would be worth having a closer look at the scheme, for
any of your staff members who might be interested in
using it.
Since 1 July 2017, first-home buyers have been able
to make personal contributions to super to help them
save for a home deposit. They are now able to apply to
withdraw those contributions (since 1 July 2018), for use
when purchasing a property.
HOW IT WORKS
If young savers want to start using the FHSS scheme,
they will need to start making personal contributions
to super (if they don’t already). Fortunately, before-tax
contributions organised through salary sacrificing will not
need to be processed any differently by payroll. The ATO
is handling all monitoring of money in the FHSS scheme.
Savers can contribute up to $15,000 per year
through the FHSS scheme (using before or after-tax
contributions), and a maximum of $30,000. So a couple
can effectively save up to $60,000, plus investment
earnings, provided they are both first-home buyers. The
idea is to utilise the tax benefits of super to help savers
grow their deposit faster than they could outside of
super.
ACCESSING THE SAVINGS
It is very important that staff members ensure they
are eligible to use the FHSS scheme before they start
making contributions. To be eligible, staff members will
need to be older than 18, intend to live in the property for
at least the six months after its purchase and have never
owned a property in Australia. Eligibility is determined
on an individual basis, so a couple can jointly purchase
a property even if only one of them is eligible for the
scheme.
Since the announcement of the FHSS, the Government
has made one exception to this last rule. Anyone
who has previously owned a home and has suffered
a financial hardship is still allowed to participate in the
scheme (provided they haven’t bought another property
since).
Once someone is ready to purchase their house, or
believe they have saved enough in their super account,
an application can be made to the ATO to withdraw their
FHSS balance. The ATO will calculate the total amount
that is eligible to be withdrawn. This withdrawal will then,
in general, be taxed at the individual’s marginal rate, less
a 30 per cent tax offset.
The first-home buyer will then need to sign a contract
to purchase or construct a home within 12 months of
receiving their FHSS balance, and notify the ATO when
they do so. If staff members do not sign a contract
within this timeframe, they can apply for an extension,
recontribute the money to super, or keep the released
amount (subject to a 20 per cent tax).
If your staff need any assistance with making
contributions to their super for the FHSS scheme, Intrust
Super is here to help. Just call 132 467 or get in touch
LEGAL MATTERS
APPROVED MANAGERS –
IS YOUR HOTEL UP TO DATE?
AS MOST HOTELIERS WOULD BE AWARE, CERTAIN LICENSED PREMISES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE
AN INDIVIDUAL LICENSEE OR APPROVED MANAGER PRESENT OR REASONABLY AVAILABLE DURING
ORDINARY TRADING HOURS OF 10:00AM AND 12 MIDNIGHT AND APPROVED EXTENDED TRADING
HOURS BETWEEN 7:00AM AND 10:00AM.
In the conduct of business for hotels, the Approved
Manager is responsible for ensuring that liquor is
supplied or possessed on the premises only in
accordance with the authority conferred by the licence
or permit.
An Approved Manager is ‘present’ at the premises
if the Approved Manager is at the premises acting
in the capacity of an Approved Manager and is in
control of the premises. An Approved Manager is
‘reasonably available’ if the Approved Manager is
readily contactable by each person involved in the
service and supply of liquor at the premises and the
time reasonably needed for the Approved Manager to
travel to the premises is not more than one hour.
In order to be granted an Approved Manager
Licence the applicant must complete a Responsible
Management of Licensed Venues (RMLV) training
course. RMLV training is mandatory for all individual
licensees, nominees and applicants for an Approved
Manager Licence in Queensland. RMLV training was
developed to reduce the negative impact of poor
management practices on the community.
The course provides details of the law and liquor
licensing requirements as well as a range of
management strategies to assist operators in the
responsible conduct of their business. RMLV courses
are available through QHA training.
An Approved Manager Licence is valid for five years,
however the training components (RMLV) need to
be completed every three years in order to meet
mandatory training requirements.
It is important that both licensees and Approved
Managers are aware of the expiration date of their
Approved Manager Licence and have ensured that
their RMLV certificate is up to date and current. The
obligation is on any Approved Manager to ensure the
RMLV certificate and Approved Manager Licence are
kept current, however, licensees need also be aware
of the requirements to have an up to date and licensed
Approved Manager on site or reasonably available
during the hours mentioned above.
To apply for an Approved Manager Licence the
applicant must complete the training course (RMLV)
and send a photocopy of the training certificate along
with the completed application for liquor and gaming
individual employees (Form 82) and application fee to
the OLGR. Renewing an Approved Manager Licence
can be done online through the OLGR website.
At an OLGR inspection, officers may ask your
Approved Manager to produce an RMLV certificate
and RSA certificates for all staff. With compliance at
the forefront of many hotel’s operations, it is important
that your venue is ready for any unannounced
inspections.
If you have any queries in relation to this issue or
need assistance with Approved Manager Licence
applications or renewals for your venue, please contact
Offering a modern and relaxed atmosphere along with
good food and drinks, the Spirit Hotels Group has
adopted a responsible gaming ethos which has seen
them win the Best Responsible Service of Gaming at
KEEN ON KENO
LOCATED AT THE GATEWAY TO THE LOCKYER VALLEY
FAST-GROWING LOCALITY OF PLAINLAND.
Situated on the Warrego Highway, Plainland is popular
with travellers passing through as well as locals from
the region.
The locality was once grazing country but today is
an important mix of expanding business, commercial
and residential properties. For those passing through,
there are major supermarket chains to refuel or
travellers can stay awhile and enjoy the offerings at the
historic Porters Plainland Hotel.
For over 70 years this hotel has been managed by
three generations of the Porter family, and is now
considered a well-known landmark on the Warrego
Highway.
Offering not only all-day dining, entertainment,
functions and bed and breakfast, it also has the best
keno facility in Queensland.
Last October at the QHA Awards, Porters Plainland
Hotel was awarded the Best Keno award for its
dedicated Keno setup. With nine Keno screens and
an additional three screens for Keno Racing, punters
will never miss out on their numbers. The screens
have been strategically placed to be visible to patrons
from anywhere in the venue, including the front deck
where meals are served, as well as the dining room.
“You can be in any area of our Hotel and play, be it our
front deck, bar or TAB areas, gaming room, pool room
or dining room,” said Porters Plainland Hotel marketing
manager, Melissa Porter.
“We have large screens and plenty of tickets in all
areas. We also have a great bunch of regular punters
who enjoy the game - it’s a very social game.”
Melissa reiterated that Keno is a game and it is meant
to be fun and enjoyable for patrons, so staffing was an
important factor in their Keno service, attributing the
hotel’s success to both staff and patrons.
“We keep striving to offer better Keno service each
year and this has paid off with ongoing growth. “We
are thrilled to have won the award two years in a row
- it’s a credit to our great players and wonderful team,”
Melissa said.
They have also had some jackpot winners at the Hotel.
“We’ve had some great winners over the years.
Ross Tims TRAINING AND SAFETY
THE RETURN OF THE WHSO?
IS THE WHSO COMING BACK? NOW THAT’S SCARED YOU, HASN’T IT?
Back in the day, the 1995 Workplace Health
and Safety legislation created a requirement for
Queensland businesses who employed more than 30
workers to appoint a staff member as the Workplace
Health and Safety Officer (WHSO). This was mandated
under the old legislation, and involved undertaking a
five day face-to-face training course for the core WHS
modules, and then a further two days for the elective
units (service industry).
The WHSO was the designated go-to person for
health and safety matters in the workplace. There were
difficulties in meeting the mandatory nature of this
appointment as it was often problematic identifying a
staff member who wanted to take on this responsibility,
and additionally undertake the seven day training
course. The other issue was cost. The high employee
turnover rate in the sector often led to prohibitive
training costs when trying to backfill the appointment.
I think that over time the scheme significantly
increased industry awareness of workplace health and
safety skills and knowledge but eventually outlived its
usefulness.
When our safety legislation was harmonised on 1
January 2012 along with other Australian states and
territories, which each had their own distinct laws,
the requirement was removed. None of the other
jurisdictions had a WHSO equivalent.
The news is that a return of the Work Health and
Safety Officer is imminent; however, in an optional
capacity. Legislation has recently passed the
Queensland Parliament which contained provisions to
allow businesses to formally appoint a WHSO, if they
so wish. The law change also provides incentives to
business to appoint a WHSO, the appointment being
evidence that steps have been taken to manage health
and safety risks.
Any person (either an employee or an employer) can
apply to the regulator for a certificate of authority for
appointment as a WHSO. The minimum qualification to
be able to gain WHSO certification is either:
WHEN OUR SAFETY LEGISLATION WAS
HARMONISED ON 1 JANUARY 2012 ALONG WITH
OTHER AUSTRALIAN STATES AND TERRITORIES,
WHICH EACH HAD THEIR OWN DISTINCT LAWS,
THE REQUIREMENT WAS REMOVED. NONE OF THE
OTHER JURISDICTIONS HAD A WHSO EQUIVALENT.
• A Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or
• Completion of an approved work health and safety
course (a number of which are currently being
accredited).
The certificate of authority is valid for a period of five
years.
The role of the WHSO is similar to former times in
that they are to advise the business on matters of
workplace health and safety including identifying
hazards and risks, report any related workplace
incidents or imminent risks, investigate WHS incidents
and establish and deliver WHS education and training
to staff.
On a 12 monthly basis, the WHSO is required to
undertake a risk assessment of work carried out by the
business and provide a written report identifying those
risks arising from the assessment. The WHSO (who is
not an employer) is indemnified from legal responsibility
for actions or omissions undertaken in good faith.
I can’t see an industry wide take-up of this optional
WHSO scheme but it’s certainly a good idea for
workplaces who wish to sustain their WHS standards
at a more proficient level.
PARENTAL LEAVE
ANSWERING SOME COMMON QUESTIONS
QHA REVIEW | 34
Parental leave is an important tool to support
employees who have welcomed a child into their
family (whether via birth or adoption), and it’s also a
workplace right as part of the National Employment
Standards (NES) in the Fair Work Act 2009.
Eligible employees also have the ability to access
parental leave pay funded by the Australian
Government, for which the employer will need to act
as ‘paymaster’. Parental leave can sometimes be a
tricky area to grasp, and the Employment Relations
Department receives a variety of enquiries from QHA
members as to how it operates in practice. This
article answers some common questions in relation to
parental leave.
Please note, the below information is only a general
summary of common parental leave questions – where
in doubt, seek advice for your specific circumstances!
Additionally, if after reading this article you want to
learn more about parental leave, the Employment
Relations Department has produced fact sheets
on both the unpaid leave under the NES and the
Government parental leave pay scheme – these can
be downloaded from the QHA website (member log-in
is required).
As an employer, do I have to provide parental
leave pay to an employee accessing parental
leave under the Act, out of my own funds?
There is no legal obligation for an employer to provide
parental leave pay out of their own funds – it is optional
to provide employer-funded parental leave pay.
Employers still have to comply with the ‘paymaster’
function for the Australian Government scheme, where
funds are sent by the Department of Human Services
(DHS) to the employer, who must then pay the funds
to the employee.
It’s important to comply with the Government
scheme - A NSW company was recently ordered
to pay a penalty of $98,700 and one of its directors
was ordered to personally pay a separate penalty of
$19,720, for breaching the Paid Parental Leave Act
2010 when they withheld Government parental leave
pay from an employee. The company eventually paid
the money …. five months late, after first giving the Fair
Work Ombudsman a document which falsely said the
payment had been made!
Do casuals have an entitlement to unpaid
parental leave?
They will have an entitlement where, immediately
before the commencement of the leave:
• they are, or will be, a long term casual, having
been employed by the employer on a regular and
systematic basis over the last 12 months; and
• they have a reasonable expectation of continuing
employment with the employer on a regular and
systematic basis.
An employee is going to be taking a year off of
unpaid parental leave. If they ask for another year
off, does the employer have agree to this?
The NES does allow an employee to request an
extension of their originally agreed parental leave
period, however there are several conditions to this.
In this scenario, if the employee has already been
granted 12 months of leave and asks for another
year off, the employer can refuse the request only on
reasonable business grounds. Please refer to the QHA
fact sheet titled ‘Parental Leave under the NES’ for
more information about how to properly respond to
parental leave extension requests from employees.
Note: if the employee is part of a couple where their
partner also takes unpaid parental leave in relation to
the same child, the couple can only take a total of 24
months of unpaid parental leave combined.
ACCOMMODATION UPDATE with Judy Hill
AUSTRALIA’S FIRST ACCOMMODATION
BUSINESS EXPO
QHA REVIEW | 36
No Vacancy is an event which for a number of years
was only a 1 day conference. However, it has now
been revamped and increased in size to become an
Accommodation Business Expo, the largest and most
comprehensive business event in the industry. It is
amined for those who own, run and market hotels,
motels, serviced apartments and other accommodation
properties across Australia, New Zealand and the
Pacific Islands.
Due to overwhelming interest from guests and
exhibitors an additional hall at Sydney’s recently
reopened International Convention Centre (ICC) has
been committed to the event, creating a dramatic
expansion to the originally planned show size. This
increase to the show’s footprint makes No Vacancy an
estimated seven times larger in scale than any other
industry event of its kind in the Australian market.
Now covering a floor space of over 7,700 square
metres, No Vacancy will boast exhibitors relevant to
all aspects of the hotel and accommodation industry
aiming to assist visitors in areas including technology,
guest experience, interiors and refurbishment, revenue
and distribution, digital marketing, management and
operations, as well as housekeeping products and
services to maximise profits.
With over 110 already confirmed suppliers and vendors
exhibiting, and a further 60 expected to be announced
in coming weeks, Sydney’s ICC will be full of experts
from across all areas of the industry. In addition, there
will be over 40 hours of free, practical and tactical
seminars led by industry experts catering to all property
sizes and management job functions.
With the Australian travel industry seeing a 6% increase
in international visitors year on year to 8.1 million and
a 7% increase in domestic travel to 97.2 million (IVS
year ending December 2017), increased demand has
propelled an expectated 24,000 new rooms to be
added to the market. Ahead of this expansion, No
Vacancy is the only place for industry members to stay
at the forefront of trends and innovations.

With breathtaking views of Table Top Mountain and
the Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba is the regional capital
for the Darling Downs and has been a major centre for
commerce, industry and education.
Thanks to its rich soils and ideal climate, Toowoomba
has been popular with agriculture and pastoralists
since the 19th century and is home to the famous
Carnival of Flowers, held annually in September and a
tradition that dates back to 1949.
The flower carnival was originally concocted as a way
to promote increased economic activity in the city
following the hardship of war and on October 21, 1950
it began with a street procession watched by a strong
crowd of 50,000 people.
Since then the event has gained momentum and
continues to grow each year attracting tourists from far
and wide. The 10-day event attracted a record crowd
last year with 255,639 people attending in what has
been a great drawcard for the town of Toowoomba.
The town’s botanical history can be traced back
to 1816 when an English botanist and explorer,
Allan Cunningham arrived in Toowoomba collecting
botanical specimens with fellow botanist Joseph
Banks.
As popularity for the region grew in the 1800s, so
too did the settlements with schools and churches
being built as well as three hotels by 1850 when
the population reached 700. Wanting to become a

was presented to the then Governor Bowen with a
request to become a city. Their wish was granted on
November 24, 1860 and Toowoomba was proclaimed
a municipality.
Progression and development soon followed with a
railway line, gaol, town hall, and hospital all built to
accommodate the growing population. Many of these
original buildings are still standing today with many
heritage-listed buildings dotted throughout the town.
In the central city and inner suburbs alone there are
about 50 sites listed on the Queensland heritage
register.
In the town’s main thoroughfare of Ruthven Street,
there are the Defiance Flour Mill and the neighbouring
Foundry built circa 1911, Piggots Department Store
(1910), The White Horse Hotel (c1900) and the clocktowered
city hall (1900).
Further walks around the town centre will uncover
the railway station built in 1873 as well as St Patrick’s
Cathedral constructed in 1883 and many more
historical structures.
Those who appreciate architecture and history will
Take a drive out of the city centre and you can
from the late 19 th to early 20 th centuries. Prior to 1931,
houses were identified by names rather than numbers,
designed by notable architects of their time. With so
However, it’s not just buildings that are heritage listed,
Toowoomba also has parklands that are protected
including Picnic Point on Tourist Road. Its natural
cultural heritage and pastoral history of the Darling
ATTORNEY GENERAL
SUPPORT RESPONSIBLE
GAMBLING AWARENESS WEEK
At end of July the Queensland Government will be
supporting Responsible Gambling Awareness Week
(RGAW), and we’d like you to join us.
The government is committed to help Queenslanders
stay within their limits, and promote how and where
they can access support services if they feel gambling
has become a problem.
The annual event will be held from 30 July to 5 August.
This year, we want your patrons to check-in with
themselves and ask ‘how does your gambling stack
up?’
By now, your venue should have received RGAW
2018 collateral, including posters and brochures to
display in the lead-up and during RGAW. Hotels with a
gaming licence are at the frontline in getting these key
messages out to their patrons.
If you’d like more information on how to become
involved in RGAW activities in your area, contact your
local Gambling Help service.
They assisted venue security with moving people on,
identified potential hazardous situations and, referred
matters to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) when
required.
In an evaluation, the officers have been described as
an “excellent resource” to the SNP and the statistics
back this up. The number of violent incidents generally
trended downwards and, we also saw the number
of referrals to QPS and the number of venue assists
increase as the trial went on.
Venue licensees, police and community
representatives all commented that the presence of
the security officers made a positive difference to their
operations and to the safety of the community.
One licensee commented, “Their contribution has
absolutely assisted us in continuing to provide a safe,
welcoming and controlled place.”
SECURITY OFFICERS: ‘EXCELLENT
RESOURCE’ FOR SUNSHINE COAST SNP
A Sunshine Coast Safe Night Precinct (SNP) initiative
that aimed to ensure ‘enjoyable, safe and respectful
nights-out’ for patrons has been met with encouraging
feedback after the completion of an eight-month trial.
In October 2016 the SNP local board were granted
government funding to provide roaming security
officers to patrol the Maroochydore precinct. Due
to the success of this initiative further funding
was granted in June 2017 to employ additional
roaming security officers to extend the service to
the Mooloolaba precinct. This initiative will continue
through to the end of December 2018.
The security officers are providing a visible presence
and dealing with a number of issues including people
drinking in public, heavily intoxicated people, violent or
aggressive behaviours and public nuisance incidents.
HEAVY FINES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE
OF LIQUOR LICENCES
QHA REVIEW | 46
When it comes to complying with obligations relating
to the sale of liquor, consider the case of two Sunshine
Coast licensee companies as an example of what
to avoid.
The two companies were recently fined and convicted
for breaches against the Liquor Act 1992, some of
which related to the same Noosa nightclub.
On 10 May 2018, the Maroochydore Magistrates
Court heard that the current owners of Rolling Rock
Nightclub - Rolling Rock Nightclub Pty Ltd - sold nearly
$40,000 worth of liquor between July and August
2017 without holding a liquor licence. This followed the
company taking over the operation from Buddha on
Hastings Pty Ltd, which was also unlicensed.
Rolling Rock Nightclub Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to two
breaches of the Act and were fined $15,000 with a
conviction recorded.
Then on 23 May 2018, Buddha on Hastings Pty
Ltd - pleaded guilty in the Maroochydore Magistrates
Court to selling over $60,700 worth of liquor at the
same venue without a licence from 20 May to 13 July
2017, after they had taken over from the then licensee,
Noosa Nightclub Pty Ltd.
They were also fined $15,000 with a conviction
recorded.
Buddha on Hastings Pty Ltd faced additional charges
relating to when they operated the Buddha on
Hastings restaurant in Noosa.
The court heard that following a number of complaints,
OLGR and the Queensland Police Service executed a
search warrant in May 2017.
As a result the owners were charged and pleaded
guilty to six counts of supplying liquor at an
unauthorised time on 23 separate days and four
charges of allowing liquor to be consumed at an
unauthorised time on 11 separate days.
The company was fined an additional $30,000 and
convictions were recorded against all charges.
These convictions are a reminder to all parties looking
to operate in the liquor and gaming industries they
should be aware of their licensing requirements well
before commencing operations. Any breach will
be taken seriously and in this case the conviction
matched the seriousness of the offence.
In the event that a company purchases the business of
another, there is still a requirement to apply to transfer
the liquor licence.

DID YOU KNOW?
Up until Queensland’s statehood in 1859,
Queensland’s hotels operated under
NSW-issued licences.
ANNUAL LIQUOR LICENCE FEES
ARE DUE SHORTLY
Last year, more than $275,000 in fines were issued for
selling liquor with a suspended or cancelled licence as
a result of unpaid liquor licence fees.
Annual liquor licence fee notices for 2018 have now
been mailed to licensees and are due for payment by
31 July 2018.
I’d like to reiterate how important it is that you pay your
annual fee by the due date. In doing this, you will avoid
your licence being automatically suspended, and then
being unable to sell liquor. If your fee remains unpaid
for a further 28 days, your licence will automatically be
cancelled.
If you have not received your notice yet, please call the
MANAGING
GAMING MACHINE
‘RESERVATIONS’
Hoteliers whose venue offer gaming machines should
ensure that they, and their staff are clear on how
gaming machines can be reserved, when patrons wish
to leave them temporarily and return to keep playing
the same machine.
If this process is not handled properly, there is potential
for conflict to develop between patrons.
The Rules Ancillary to Gaming allow for gaming
machines to be reserved for a maximum of three
minutes.
Basically, there are three ways gaming machines can
be reserved by a patron at your venue:
• Using the machine’s ‘Reserve’ button is the
preferred option to reserve a gaming machine as
this functionality restricts the reservation to three
minutes.
• If your venue uses plastic, in-house ‘Reserve’
signs, make sure you comply with the Rules
Ancillary to Gaming. Requests by patrons to
remove the signs should be agreed to when
possible after three minutes, even if transferring
credits/money off the gaming machine is required.
If you find it difficult to comply with the Rules
Ancillary to Gaming regarding these signs you
should stop using them.
• When membership cards are used in conjunction
with site software (e.g. EZY Break or Break Away)
the attendant alerts, received after three minutes
of a machine being reserved, should be actioned
promptly.
TIME TO UPDATE YOUR SIGNAGE
To help you communicate this with patrons and
staff, we have gone through all our downloadable
signage online and amended the fine amounts.
Please check your in-venue signage, and update
where necessary.
Vonu Beer
STRONG PALE ALE
Balter Brewing
HOP SKIP &
JUMP IPA
Aether Brewing
QHA REVIEW | 48
Light golden ale with
a little bitterness, malt
and a wisp of lemon. It’s
enjoyable enough without
being out-of-this-world.
Certainly wouldn’t knock
it back if offered one on a
warm day.
Kind of like a Fijian version
of a Corona. Not much
aroma but it is clean and
crisp. Best of all, every
time you consume one
you’re in part playing
a role in supporting
the protection of the
endangered Vonu Dina
Majestic Sea Turtle of
the South Pacific. You
can consume a beer and
become a wildlife warrior
all in one.
Another Balter brew
that’s hard to fault. The
beers coming out of their
Currumbin brewery are
just so incredibly smooth.
This one is intended to
fill the void for drinkers
wanting more than a pale
ale without the hop-hit,
or should we say punch,
of an IPA, and it does just
that. A perfectly balanced
sweetness and bitterness
has resulted in an
incredibly easy-drinking
and enjoyable beer.
Thanks Balter, you have
done it again.
One hell of a great drop. It
pours golden amber with
a dense white head and
it’s then you are hit with
a fresh pine nose. Next is
the big, bold, full bodied
floral bitterness with
caramel malts coming
through the tasty, sprucy
hops. After ‘hopping’ into
a few of these you will
be ‘jumping’ for joy and
‘skipping’ on the notion of
going home early.

is so good it will have
you singing sea shanties
before signing up to sail
the seven seas. Best
in a Dirty Martini, it is
guaranteed to satisfy the
saltiest of sea dogs.
In old Latin, Aqua Vita
means ‘water for life’
and this could well be.
Fresh, fruity and floral
with imperial mandarin,
lemon myrtle, strawberry
eucalyptus, wild fennel
and Serbian juniper, this
is a very clean spirit. It is
recommended as best
savoured with a block of
ice and a splash of Fever
Tree Elderberry tonic,
along with fresh fruits
such mandarin or peach
to highlight the beautiful
fruity notes.
An invigorating mixture
of vapour-distilled anise
botanicals and locally
harvested elderberries.
The ingredients combine
to create a harmonious
taste that is rich on the
palate. However, don’t
limit enjoying this with
your better half alone
because you could quite
easily fall in love with it all
by yourself.
A premium “bottled”
cocktail within one of the
most creative pieces of
packaging we have come
across. “An explosive
twist on the Italian
classic. Equal parts The
Broadside, Italian Aperitif
and Sweet Vermouth
diluted and garnished for
the distinguished palate”
is what it says on the can.
The taste will absolutely
blow your socks off.
AETHER BREWING SHOWCASE
INTO THE AETHER
QHA REVIEW | 50
This is the story two friends
who dared to dream and set
about realising that dream.
Dave Johnson and Jimmy
Young are a couple of mates
who worked together in oil
and gas. They lived on the
Gold Coast and one day,
while knocking back a few
beers at Jimmy’s place,
Jimmy said those seven
words that so many have
said before him: “I’ve always
wanted to own a bar!” To which Dave replied, “I’ve
always wanted to own a brewery!”
They pulled out the butcher’s paper and started
scribbling all of their ideas to open a craft beer
brewpub in Brisbane. Whenever they hit a dead end,
they said, “Chuck that out in the aether for now, and
we’ll deal with it later.”
Any other story would have ended there. Any other
two guys would’ve woken up the next morning,
perhaps slightly the worse for wear, and shrugged it off
as a pipe dream that they could never pull off. Not this
story however and not these guys.
Dave, the creative, the ideas man, would never let his
dream die. Jimmy, the perfectionist, the action man,
would never stop before the job was done.
Over months and years, the plans kept forming, the
brew recipes kept evolving, the pieces kept falling
into place, and the boys kept working. Obstacles fell
in their path, but they pressed on in their labours with
determination. And then, one fateful day at the start
of 2016, they signed a lease for a venue on Railway
Terrace in Milton. Halfway through the year, their
custom designed brewing system arrived on their
doorstep.
The following months had Jimmy and Dave working
around the clock—fine-tuning equipment, ripping
out all evidence of the previous tenants, building a
brewpub from scratch… and of course, brewing
enough ‘test batches’ of delicious craft beer to keep
them hydrated during their marathon effort.
Finally, at the end of 2016,
the day arrived. Six years
of vision culminated in the
doors swinging open, as the
delights of Aether Brewing
were made available to the
people.
It truly is a remarkable story
of two mates simply having
a crack and working their
clackers off to realise a
dream. And their dream
is now expanding into an
entirely new realm, their brewpub in Milton can’t keep
up with demand and hence they’re looking to establish
a production facility in Northgate. It would see them
in a position to distribute on a sustainable level. They
already have their own canning line that provides them
the opportunity to put seasonals into cans and have
their staples in stock.
As for the venue itself, it isn’t some crowded beer hall,
where the floors are sticky and you can’t hear yourself
think. The place is quaint with a really friendly, relaxed
vibe. It is a quality setup.
You can pull up a stool at one of the custom-made bar
tables, admire the shiny brewing tanks, and tap your
foot to the music they’ve curated for your enjoyment.
There’s 12 beers on tap—Aether’s six core range
beers, three of their seasonal beers, and three guest
beers. If you’re keen on a bite to eat, their menu has
been designed with their beers in mind. In fact, the
food produced is designed to match their beers, and
their beers are designed to match their food.
If you sneak out back, past the waterfall and up the
stairs, there’s even a spacious function room with its
own music system and a standing capacity of 90 with
private catering packages available.
Simply put, this is one brewpub that has already made
its mark on the Brisbane hotel scene and with their
sights set on an expanded production facility, Dave
and Jimmy will no doubt get more of their Aether out
into the aether.

WINE with John Rozentals
Looking south across the Blue
foot of the Pyrenees mountains.
JOHN ROZENTALS CONSIDERS
A HUGE CLAIM
THAT THE CENTRAL-VICTORIAN PYRENEES
REGION PRODUCES THE STATE’S BEST
CABERNET SAUVIGNON - IT’S A HUGE
CALL TO MAKE
In a state as rich in grapegrowing resources as Victoria
— with regions such as the Yarra Valley, Heathcote,
Geelong and the Grampians — Andrew Koerner, chief
winemaker for Blue Pyrenees Estate, reckons that the
central region of the Pyrenees is the pick of the state’s
regions for cabernet sauvignon, arguably the king of
red-grape varieties.
“There is no doubt that the Pyrenees’ growing-season
weather pattern of warm days and cool nights lends
itself to long, slow and even ripening of cabernet
sauvignon grapes,” he says.
“This ripening season often culminates in warm, dry
March weather to finish off this ripening process,
producing intensity of flavour without compromising
elegance and subtlety.”
I can only nod in agreement, but add that several other
Victorian regions would claim the same, so the proof
has to be in the drinking.
Last week I reviewed the superlative BPE 2012
Richardson Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This was
certainly one of the best cabernets I have had the
pleasure to taste, but at about $120 it should be
outstanding.
So what about something that Average Joe can afford.
How does something like the standard BPE 2015
Cabernet reviewed this week stand up?
Very well indeed, though I’m still a bit reticent about
recognising Koerner’s claim, at least until presented
by the indisputable results of a major multi-region
Victorian taste-off.
Made from sangiovese,
an increasingly popular
variety for rosé, grown in
the Canowindra region,
where Jason O’Dea has
been practising organic
viticulture for many
years. A dry, refreshing
and flavoursome style
produced only from freerun
juice and fined with
‘vegan-friendly’ agents.
A bold, juicy red produced
again from fruit grown
near Canowindra. Brief
maturation in French and
American oak has added
a touch of complexity.
Preservatives have been
avoided, attesting to quite
remarkable and skilful
winemaking in achieving
such brightness and
clarity of appearance
and flavour.
A very handy red from a
drier-than-usual season in
the Pyrenees district. Lots
of cassis and blackberries,
plus refined and restrained
French oak. Palate shows
good balance of fruit, oak,
tannin and acidity.
I think the jury remains out
on whether this is from
Victoria’s top cabernet
region, though the Pyrenees
is right up there.
