Proper Medication Disposal
Through Deterra Drug
Deactivation System
Proper disposal of unwanted medication
helps to prevent environmental
contamination from flushing and throwing
away medications, as well as helps to
decrease the occurrence of misuse or
abuse.
Made by Minneapolis-based Verde
Technologies, Inc., the Deterra Drug
Deactivation System provides a safe and
environmentally responsible solution for
disposal of unwanted prescription and
over-the-counter medications. The system
renders unwanted, unneeded narcotics,
antibiotics, transdermal patches and other
medications ineffective – safe for disposal
and the environment.
How the Technology Works
Using activated carbon, the deactivation
system neutralizes the active chemicals in
prescription drugs. This technology is highly
effective in absorbing and firmly binding
pharmaceuticals, rendering them inactive
and ineffective for misuse or accidental
exposure to children or pets.
How to Deactivate and Dispose of
Unwanted Medication
1. Place unused medications in the pouch.
2. Fill halfway with warm tap water.
3. Wait 30 seconds.
4. Seal pouch.
5. Gently shake.
6. Dispose with normal trash.
These systems have been made possible by
a donation from Mallinckrodt
Pharmaceuticals, in partnership with
Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of
America (CADCA) and the Florida Rural
Water Association. Learn more at the Drug
