Orange County last month.<br />

as an advanced county commissioner,”<br />

Commissioner Smith<br />

said. “This empowers me to<br />

continue to serve my constitutes<br />

with greater understanding as a<br />

problem solver.”<br />

The Advanced County<br />

Commissioner (ACC) education<br />

program is an advanced leadership<br />

program designed for graduates of<br />

the Certified County Commissioners<br />

Director of UF/IFAS Extension during<br />

a Florida Association of Counties<br />

conference in June.<br />

(CCC) program. The course focuses on leadership with an<br />

emphasis on the future of Florida. Participants are tasked with<br />

preparing for the future by thinking and acting anew and asserting<br />

skillful leadership in times of daunting challenges and rapid change.<br />

“Commissioners who choose to participate in the voluntary program<br />

have shown their commitment to the future of their communities,”<br />

said Florida Counties Foundation Director Eric Poole. “By<br />

bringing together veteran commissioners from throughout Florida,<br />

this program provides a foundation for commissioners to work<br />

collaboratively on Florida’s most pressing challenges.”<br />

Organized as a series of three seminars, the ACC program is<br />

completed after 27 hours of total course work. Participating<br />

commissioners must commit to fully participate in all three<br />

seminars. This year’s seminars focused on Preparing County<br />

Leaders for Florida’s Future. The University of Florida/IFAS<br />

Extension has sponsored this program for the last ten years in<br />

Alachua County.<br />

Manatee County Recognized as a Healthy<br />

Community Champion<br />

The Florida Department of Health is proud to recognize Manatee<br />

County as a <strong>2018</strong> Healthy Community Champion. Citing the<br />

county’s dedication to providing access to bicycle routes, parks,<br />

greenways, farm stands, a community orchard and a formal<br />

comprehensive employee wellness program, Manatee stood out as<br />
