30 x August 16 — September 5, 2018 x www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29 Orlando Magic held auditions for this season’s dancers, which culminated at Amway Center’s Disney Atrium. Six of the dancers are new to the squad. Newcomer Carolyn, who was born and raised in Orlando, looked up to the Magic Dancers when she was younger and aspired to be just like them. “As a young woman, as a little girl growing up going to Magic games, it’s very much a part of the community,” Carolyn said. “So, being able to be amongst this group of very empowered, very strong women who signify so much in our community — that’s very positive, that children look up to and that I looked up to at one point — it’s surreal. It’s definitely very, very surreal.” Even for those who are veterans, the energy and enthusiasm of the event and the thrill of finding out they have reclaimed their spots on the team doesn’t fade. “Never gets old,” said Nicole F., a team leader who will take the court for the seventh consecutive season. “But the nerves do get higher and higher every year, just because you know what you have to lose.” Returning team members, like Nicole and Desiree, who rejoins the team for a third straight year, are extra eager to get back into the swing of things because of how unique the upcoming season will be. “I’m looking forward to the big 30th anniversary with all of the alumni and dancing with everybody and sharing the court,” Desiree said. “I’m just excited for another amazing season.” The Orlando Magic Dancers for the 2018-19 NBA season are (front, l. to r.) www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x August 16 — September 5, 2018 x 31 Gary Bassing, Orlando Magic Orlando Magic rookie Mohamed Bamba (center) surprises approximately 50 youngsters at the Magic Youth Academy Basketball Camp. Campers participating in the Magic Youth Academy Basketball Camps, presented by UnitedHealthcare, were in for a surprise when they were visited by Orlando Magic rookie Mohamed Bamba. In addition to answering several questions from the attendees, Bamba took on all challengers in one-on-one, did slide and defensive drills, and took part in a five-on-five session. Later in the day, one player after another lined up and tried doing the unthinkable — shooting over the outstretched arms of the shot-blocking center the Magic selected with the sixth pick in June’s NBA Draft. Predictably, Bamba swatted just about every shot — much to the delight of the boys and girls ranging in ages 7-16. “I take [being a role model] very seriously, because the platform is there for me to have significant change on the youth, which is the world, because they are our future,” Bamba said. “One thing I told the kids is to believe in themselves and shoot for the stars. As cheesy as that sounds, it’s like a real thing. Being told to get out, not being afraid to fail, and [to] try new things — that really makes a difference.” Although we try to ensure that all information presented above is the most current, correct and dependable available, we do rely on others for the source of our news.
