DPHS Graduate Participates in RIMPAC<br />

A 2003 graduate of Dr. Phillips<br />
High School and an Orlando native<br />
served in the world’s largest<br />
international maritime warfare exercise,<br />
Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC).<br />
Lt. Cmdr. Craig Dobson, a 2007<br />
graduate of the University of Florida,<br />
typically spends his drill weekends<br />
as a Navy reserve sailor at<br />
Navy Operational Support Center<br />
Denver in the Undersea Warfare<br />
Operations Detachment. However,<br />
he recently completed work at<br />
RIMPAC for Commander, Submarine<br />
Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, ensuring<br />
the safety and operability of the<br />
submarines that participated in the<br />
exercise.<br />
Dobson, who is a submarine<br />
warfare officer, knows a thing or<br />
two about submarines. He previously<br />
served five years on active<br />
duty, spending much of his time on<br />
the Los Angeles-class submarine<br />
USS Asheville (SSN-758). During<br />
RIMPAC, he served in the Maritime<br />
Operations Center as a watchstander,<br />
filling a role similar to what air<br />
traffic control does for air operations,<br />
but for submarines.<br />
“I remember being on the boat<br />
and talking through communications<br />
to our counterparts on shore,”<br />
Dobson said about his time on<br />
Asheville. “One of those shorebased<br />
watchstanders is the theater<br />
anti-submarine watch officer; that’s<br />
what I do now as a reservist. I come<br />
