BE BOLD
WITH COLOR
Rebecca Green
Broker
ABOVE Color in a space should fit
a 60-30-10 rule.
LOCATION: 903 Ash Street,
Lake Oswego
Color evokes so many emotions.
Whether it’s a single wall in a show-stopping color, taking a cue from a
beloved piece of art, a few bright accessories or a rug that pops, color can
really set the stage in any home.
The homeowner and builder of this custom home took time to develop the
perfect balance with not only color but also a medley of wood tones, natural
light and the surroundings to create a bold, modern home in the heart in Lake
Oswego. Each color plays off the others. The sun that cascades through the
oversized windows creates an additional vibrancy and adds to the energy that
is so immediately recognized as you step inside this home.
As a rule, color in a space should meet a 60-30-10 rule. That is, 60 percent
of the room should be in the main color on the walls and incorporated in big
accent pieces. Then, 30 percent of the room is a secondary color—this could
be on bed linens, an accent wall, or furniture. The final 10 percent of color in
a room is an accent color—pillows, artwork, other decorations.
No matter how bold you are willing to be, the general rule is to pick a
color palette for the entire house, so the rooms work together. If you’re
designing a space around a large patterned piece of furniture, rug or art, pick
colors you like from that piece. The artwork in this home played a hand in
the inspiration for the main wall colors throughout. Design the most public
spaces first, then tie in colors from those rooms in your more private areas,
like bedrooms and bathrooms.
NEW PAINT
STYLES
ABOVE Contrasting colors on
molding and other features can
brighten a room.
One of the best ways to freshen up a home is with a new coat of paint. It
doesn’t have to be white (or ecru or cream or eggshell or any of the other
whites out there). A pop of color makes for a happy home, and paint
companies are already making predictions for what will be hot in 2019.
Sherwin-Williams announced its predictions for 2019 with its Colormix
Color Forecast. The forty-two colors are organized into six palettes, from
the Wanderer—earthy colors that echo the adobe homes and sun-drenched
canyons of the Southwest—to the Naturalist, with its garden-inspired greens
and mushroom tones. One thing that connects all the palettes? Versatile
neutrals connect with a splash of bright color to liven up your surroundings.
Pantone Color Institute recently issued seventy-two colors it believes will
trend in 2019. Two palettes the institute believes will be a hit are the Cravings
palette, a series of warm, deep purples, reds and oranges, and Classico, with
golds, deep jewel tones and neutrals that will never go out of style.
Once you have your color palette ready, consider painting your ceiling.
Sure, you’ve been told color on the ceiling will make the room feel smaller—
but done correctly, it can add drama and energy to a room. Use a contrasting
color if you have crown molding or other features, or paint the ceiling the
same color as the walls to envelop the room—but do this with a more neutral
color, or risk feeling stifled.
THE HUB OF YOUR HOME
Steve Studley
Broker
Our homes are formed from many unique spaces, each with
their own feel and spirit, reflective of different aspects of our
lives. Bedrooms are restful and rejuvenative, a retreat between
days. Dining rooms have a formal grandeur and the air of
gatherings. Offices speak of whirlwinds of productivity and
living rooms mark the freedom of relaxation. But kitchens
carry a distinction of connectivity to all the day’s pieces.
Kitchens are the pivoting point around which all our lives
spin, the intersection of our many comings and goings,
regardless of how we spend our days. Our lives are full, our
schedules hectic and our opportunities to connect to the
people we share our homes with seem fewer and farther
between. But these busy lives come together in the kitchen,
standing at the refrigerator, raiding the pantry or simply
grabbing a glass of water. In moments of reflection, kitchens
carry a romantic weight as the stage on which so many of our
most sincere memories are played.
Take the time to find a home with a kitchen befitting of
such an important role, and trust the right people to help
you find it—people who understand the worth of those
intangible values.
