10 QUESTIONS
WITH VIC
By Vic Gerami
JAE SUH PARK
Jae Suh Park, star of Netflix’s Friends from
College seems to have it all-talent, smarts and
beauty, a handsome and talented husband,
beautiful daughter and a hit show. Best of all,
she is funny, playful and does not take herself
too seriously.
Modesty aside, how would you describe yourself?
Girl’s Girl. Home Creator. Plant Whisperer.
Smart Ass.
As a successful Korean-American actress, do
you see a shift in Hollywood in diversity, specifically
in regards to Asian-American roles?
Most definitely. I don’t think you can cast a
project now without thinking about diversity
and that’s great. But now we have to think
about making those roles full-fleshed and
three-dimensional, and that will take time.
Did you see the film, “Crazy Rich Asians”? If
so, what did you think?
Never heard of it…Of course I saw Crazy Rich
Asians! Well I love Rom-coms, and it did not
disappoint. It’s a fun summer flick you can
go see with a date, your girlfriends, and your
mom. I think what’s so special about the film is
that it’s a universal story brought alive by Asian
faces. We are relating to them as full-fleshed
three-dimensional people, and that does a lot
for our society.
How does it feel to be on a hit Netflix show like
COVER
When you are gay and live in a town,
Gay bars become a home, where you feel
comfortable. All the bars are great here, so
many tend to pick a different bar. The next
step is always to find a great bartender.
That is also hard to do, as there are many
great bartenders here.
Chuck is one. He has been the bartender at
Tool Shed nearly since Sean Newman built
the bar. Oh well, good by Chuck, out with
the old and all that. I am kidding of course.
When I first moved here I wanted to live in
Warm Sands. Because I read perverts lived
there according to the Desert Sun, and that
was good enough for me. And that was
also the last time I read the Desert Sun.
Honestly, being staggering distance from a
bar was more of a key factor in making it
my home bar. Nonetheless, Chuck was the
reason it remained my home bar. Truth be
told I am not a comfortable bar person and
more of an introvert, Not a “Oh god don't
talk to me”, but more like a "yup" and
"nope" one-word kind of guy and a swig of
beer.
Also, truth be told I spent many afternoons
at the Tool Shed, as it was also staggering
distance from the old office. It was in the
early days of 01 when it was fashionable to
attend one Bar. Today, I like many bars and
that's great because there are many great
Bars.
For those that want to be a great bartender,
following Chuck's lead would be a good
place to start.
For 16 magical years, Chuck was my
afternoon bartender and that is probably
the hardest shift. All shifts have their issues
but the after work crowd its probably more
testy.
Chuck always had a good sense of humor
and a good story and that made him one of
my favorites! He would say, "How is your
day" and I would say "Shitty". He would
just look at me and laugh, and say "Get in
line, everyone had a shitty day today".
great memories of Palm Springs, there was
a moment when we thought it would last
forever, But all good things have a timer.
But as I write this I feel like I am also
saying goodbye to a part of my past and
that hurts like hell. Back then, for me
Chuck ran the sand box many of us grew
up in. Where we drank, sang, laughed, and
cried. Then drank and cried, maybe laugh
again. But mostly we drank. But in a way, a
great bartender helped you live. Even today
the value of a local pub is gold, it remains
a place of community. Where admission is
merely the price of a drink.
Life comes with its up and downs and we
are weathered by it good or bad. But Chuck
stayed the same as he ignored our epic fails
and celebrated our successes.
To be sure, the heart of a bar is its staff and
the sign of a compassionate owner. Rob fits
that role and they add some bit of magic to
your life.
Thanks for the magic Chuck.
Chuck saw a lot of things come and go and
we all changed with the times, some we lost
or moved and some still here but like all NH rote 16 to Conway!
THE ARTS OF OBAMA JAPAN
AdamsArtExpose’
AdamsArtExpose’ ART
Yes, there is a city in Japan with the
same name as former President Obama.
The city of Obama is not named after
President Obama, it has existed for
several centuries and initially was a major
port of entry into Japan when travelers
passed through Obama going from Kyoto
to China. Obama visited Obama, Japan
when he was a U.S. Senator and gave
an interview to a Japanese television
network, TBS.
The primary industry of the city used
to be fishing but has in recent years
become known for lacquered chopsticks.
Obama is the location of about 80% of
the production of lacquered chopsticks
in Japan. The designs on the chopsticks,
known as Wakasa Chopsticks, includes
sea shells and gold and silver leaf which
is attached to the base of the chopstick
and covered with several coats of
lacquer which are then buffed until
colors appear. Each layer has different
colors and varied exquisite designs. The
designs are traditional and modern. If
you have dined in a Japanese restaurant
where lacquered chopsticks were offered
as eating utensils, as contrasted to the
unfinished wood chopsticks which you
pull apart, you were probably eating with
Wakasa chopsticks from Obama.
In addition to chopsticks Wakasa-nun
also makes varied lacquered items
including trays and boxes that are highly
prized as luxury souvenirs around the
world. Pine needles and cypress are used
as the base of the items with egg shells
and sea shells that form the designs.
This is then covered in layers of lacquer
which is burnished to bring out a highly
polished surface.
Another prized item from Obama are
the agate crafts which are carved from
a primarily red agate stone found in the
area. The items carved from the stone
vary from ornaments to utility items such
as incense burners, drinking cups and
jewelry. The rough stone is burned and
then polished with sand to create a luster
that is found in the carved items.
Wakasa Japanese paper is also created
in Obama. It is a colorfully dyed strong
paper used in making stationary
and craft paper for paper dolls.
The paper is made from carefully
selected trees found in the local area
and in combination with the water
of Obama the it creates a unique
paper that is known worldwide.
“Friends from College’?
I feel super grateful. Not only am I on a show,
but I get to work with the kindest, funniest,
most talented cast and crew. Apparently this is
not always the case, so it’s not too shabby that I
get to experience this as my first series regular
gig.
What advice do you have for young Asian
actresses who are navigating lack of roles for
people of color in Hollywood?
Be true to who you are. Believe your voice matters
and that there’s only one you. You may be
Asian, or a person of color, but you’re not all
Asians or all persons of color. Stay in your lane
and do your best to stay sane!
What project(s) do you have coming up?
At this point, I’m back pounding the pavement
again. We wrapped season 2 a little bit ago. We
shoot in New York so I spent a few months
going back and forth from LA to NY. That was
one hell of a commute! I’m just re-charging and
waiting to see what adventures will come to be.
Tell me a secret-a good one!
Never! I’m great at keeping secrets…just like
my character.
What do you do on your day off to decompress?
Well, when you have a child, there’s really no
‘day off ’ but lately when I do get some time to
myself. It usually involves a glass of wine and
Queer Eye.
Tell me about your fans when they recognize
you in public.
I hardly ever get recognized, and when I do it’s
more of “Do I know you from somewhere? You
look familiar.” Usually they think we shop at
the same Trader Joe’s.
What is your favorite charity or cause?
I just recently became involved with Best
Buddies. It’s kind of like a mash-up of Special
Olympics and Big Brother/Big Sister. It’s mission
is to establish a global volunteer movement
that creates opportunities for one-to-one
friendships, integrated employment and leadership
development for people with intellectual
and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Especially in this social climate, what a beautiful
way to celebrate inclusion and love. Entertainment Journalism Award.
Fabeyonce “Be kind, Bitch”
I personally find it saddening that our
community is so small, yet no one can be happy
for anyone else's success. I work hard at what I
do. Sure, I work a daytime job, but I still push
my drag and make sure you get everything
needed when seeing me hit the stage, jewels,
nails, costume, Paint, etc. but it seems that
recently, other’s true colors are coming out and
it sucks.
You think people are your friends and they
turn out not to be. You think they’re here to
help you out and be better, but really want
you to fail and can care less. Now that's not
everybody but the ones that you trust the most,
it hurts the most. Now coming in the scene
5 years ago, I jumped right in not knowing
anything or anyone. I had no one to show me
how to become the queen I am today. I learned
that showing RESPECT AND BEING KIND
gets you everywhere. I learned from watching
queens around me work and took what I liked
and added my own twist to it. It wasn't easy.
I payed my dues and still am paying them.
Never have I took what I do to the head, nor
thought highly of myself. I consider myself one
of many local drag queens here in Palm Springs
working hard to be in the spotlight and it's not
a bad thing and I'll continue to push myself
everywhere I go.
others that need it, no need to be salty. We all
work in this small town and need to make sure
that we are doing what we are here for and
that's showing all of our guest that Palm springs
is the place to be for all gay events and drag
shows. If we work together, then more people
would come out and show their support. But
since we can't even support each other, how do
we expect them to do so.
I know where I stand in this community and I
know who I am and I know who has my back. I
won't let anyone affect me or what I do, that's a
promise.
But my advice to all new queens or
entertainers is don't let anyone steal your shine,
work hard, and show up and show support. If
you want this bad enough, work toward it and
don't be a mean toad. Be kind, love, respect
and encourage everyone else. To do that, we all
need to be happy for everyone, even if you’re
not winning the crown, it's ok be happy for
them. It's their time and they deserved it but
you need to work harder and show these people
that your here for good and you want to stay
around.
