DENIS HOPE 

Menswear are 

moving to Norden! 

After almost 60 years in Rochdale Town 

Centre, DENIS HOPE are closing their Drake 

street store and moving to Norden village. 

Founder Denis Hope 

Founded by Denis Hope in 1959, the shop size more than tripled over the first 15 years, 

allowing Denis to showcase an array of new and exciting labels, many of which were sourced 

from all over Europe. There was the introduction of a formal hire department, soon followed by 

a ladies department. Denis always believed in providing the best experience to customers. If 

you have shopped in any of their stores you will know that impeccable customer service is still 

instilled in the team today. It is this ethos, coupled with exceptional quality 

clothing that sees generations of the same families still 

shopping in the store today. 

The store now in the hands of Michael, Denis’ son, has expanded 

further over the last few years. HOPE Menswear was opened in 

Clitheroe 7 years ago, with a ladies department added in August 

2017. And there is the beautiful HOPE Womenswear store, now in 

its 3rd year in Norden. 

While all 3 stores continue to prosper the decline of Drake Street 

has led to the decision to leave the town centre after 59 years. 

The move, headed by Oliver Hope, Denis’ grandson, is already proving a massive hit with 

existing customers and the locals of Norden village, and they’ve not even opened yet!! The store 

will occupy no 794 Edenfield Rd, 3 doors down from HOPE Womenswear, and is set to open in 

September 2018. Once opened customers will find new and exciting labels from throughout 

Europe, mixed with well known brands like TED BAKER, BARBOUR, 

and the largest HUGO BOSS collection outside of Manchester. 

Oliver said “We are really excited about the move! We feel 

new customers will be surprised as to how much choice 

we have, not only on formal tailoring, which we are 

famous for locally, but the casual side of things too.” 

The hire department will also move to the Norden 

store, with a separate entrance to the hire showroom 

at 796b Edenfield Rd. The in house alteration service 

is offered on all garments bought, meaning no 

matter your shape or size HOPE have you covered. 

September bodes to be an 

exciting chapter not only for 

DENIS HOPE but also for Norden itself.

Behind every Great Holiday

The Bermuda Triangle

Well not really, but with the 

exceptionally warm weather and 

some strange goings on up in Healey, 

you would be forgiven for calling the 

area bordered by Shawclough Road 

and Dell Road, just up past the 

Healey Hotel, the ‘Healey Triangle’. 

Now, the Bermuda Triangle is 

infamous for things (ships, boats and 

planes) disappearing whilst the 

opposite appears to be happening 

at the, now hoping to be famous, 

Healey Triangle. 

Firstly, the annual daffodil display 

moved to the edge of the Triangle to 

form a striking primrose coloured 

border. Then work started on the 

wooded area with the old fencing 

removed, trees cut back, coppicing 

(that’s branches intertwined to make 

a natural barrier that attracts wildlife) 

and over 10,000 bluebells planted. 

However, the mystery has been 

solved. There was no magic; it was 

all down to our Countryside Rangers 

ably assisted by the Town’s Green 

Volunteers headed up by local lad, 

Dave Wild. The work they do is 

phenomenal and the results of their 

labour are on show for everyone to 

admire. 

Poppies and wild flowers now grace 

the centrepiece within the Triangle. 

A new sign has appeared, 

‘Shawclough and Healey’ in the form 

and colours of the LMS Railway, 

representing the old railway station 

that stood in the place that 

Campion Way and Columbine Close 

now occupy. 

This was part of the Rochdale to 

Bacup line, built in 1870. It carried 

passengers up until 1947 and goods 

up until the 1960s, serving Turners

and the quarries, and finally closing 

in 1965. It now forms part of the 

Healey Dell Nature Reserve, 

enjoyed by walkers and cyclists alike. 

The latest addition to the Triangle 

is a silhouette of a soldier; this is part 

of the remembrance events for the

Whitworth enjoys 

another successful 

Family Fun Day 

Whitworth enjoyed its annual Family 

Fun Day on Sunday 8th July. Now in its 

ninth year, it is held at the Riverside and 

organised by the Whitworth Tourism and 

Leisure Committee volunteers. 

Unfortunately, this year, the dog show 

element was cancelled due to health and 

safety concerns for the dogs taking part 

and following advice from Rossendale 

Responsible Animal Rescue and local vets. 

Attractions on the Riverside car park 

included funfair rides and games, ice 

cream and candy floss. 

Samba Dance and Fitness provided 

fantastic entertainment by their different 

dance teams and there were a range 

of fundraising and craft stalls to tempt 

visitors. 

RRG Toyota Rochdale supported the 

event by supplying a new Aygo covered in 

paw prints and the community guessed 

the number of prints to win a gigantic 

teddy dog, the winner was Annaleese 

Hinchliffe who was the closest guess to 

the 605 paw print total!!

YELLOWAY AND ELLEN SMITHS 

It was as a parcels delivery service using 

pony and cart that Robert Holt began his 

business in 1902 before joining up with 

his brother two years later to operate a 

general carriers company, but it wasn’t 

long before the pony was replaced by 

steam and motor lorries. 

On slack weekends the lorries would be 

adapted and by May 1913 the Holts had built 

their first purpose-built charabanc, a 28 

seater Dennis, registering Yelloway as a 

passenger-carrying company in 1915. In the 

early days their routes were short, sometimes 

only to Hollingworth Lake, but before long 

trips were being taken farther afield, their 

familiar yellow coachwork becoming famous 

across the region. Soon, Holt Brothers 

extended their routes through Manchester 

and Oldham and into the 1920’s throughout 

the North West and to London as an express 

service. Times were hard for business in the 

late 1920’s and early 1930’s and the Holts 

business went into administration, being 

bought by a consortium who named the 

company Yelloway Motor Service Ltd in 1931. 

National Bus Company to whom they 

remained under contract until the late 1980’s. 

It is fitting, perhaps that the route which 

Rochdale people knew best – from the town 

to Blackpool – should be the last to go in the 

late 1980’s after which, due to maintenance 

problems and ageing coaches Yelloway was 

placed under the control of Crosville Motor 

Services along with what contract work 

remained. In 1986 Courtesy Coaches bought 

the rights to the Yelloway name and operated 

until 2013 since when Yelloway Coaches Ltd 

has run a fleet of coaches out of Oldham. 

Ellen Smith’s had rural beginnings with 

Littleborough farmers Ellen Gibson and Lund 

Smith. Alongside selling farm produce or 

carrying out local removals in covered vans, 

they opened in 1900 a horse-drawn haulage 

business. On Lund Smith’s death in 1907 

Ellen took up the reins of the business with 

her three sons and soon were stripping 

lorries and adapting them for passenger 

transport, promoting themselves as ‘Luxury 

coaching at its best.’ 

By 1911 Ellen Smith’s was operating 

nationally as a charabanc service, Gracie 

Fields remembering as a child of 13 taking 

their coach on a trip to Torquay. By the 

1920’s the company was running Leyland 

M-type charabancs to Eastbourne, and by 

1925 ‘chara parties ‘had become all the rage 

in Ellen Smith’s purpose-built 26-seater 

bodies built by Jack Crabtree (in one week) 

over a Leyland Lioness chassis. At that time, 

Ellen Smith’s garage and lean-to office stood 

at Wardleworth just before Heybrook School 

(now the site of the ATS Euromaster garage) 

later operating sales and ticketing from 

their familiar town centre booking office in 

Newgate. 

From its garage in Weir Street (now where 

the new library stands at Number One 

Riverside) the company extended its routes 

throughout the 1930’s although the war cut 

them back again, financial events requiring 

the expedience of a sale of their services to 

local corporations. But after World War II 

Yelloway expanded once more by buying out 

existing operators and licenses for express 

tours to run to North Wales and additional 

routes to Cleveleys. This buy-out continued 

through the 1950’s and 1960’s, capitalising 

on the heyday of mill town holidays 

especially to the Lancashire coast and North 

Wales. However, the 1970’s saw Yelloway 

relinquish some of its longer routes to the

With their white coaches with red piping and 

leaping tiger symbol, Ellen Smith’s coaches 

were part of the Rochdale scene for many 

years. Their fleet consisted initially of Lioness 

coaches, then Leyland Tigers from 1931 by 

which time they were running to almost 150 

destinations as well as school trips, football 

and rugby excursions. 

World War II saw Ellen Smith’s coaches 

requisitioned for such prisoner of war 

transport as taking Italians to help build 

Kirkholt estate, but into the 1950’s with the 

new Leyland Worldmaster coach the company 

set itself a long-term future into the 1990’s 

with a bigger fleet across more services. However, 

in 1991 Ellen Smith’s (Tours) was sold 

and operated as a subsidiary of Rossendale 

Transport Ltd (later Coachways Ltd) at which 

point the last two Smiths – Eric and Marjorie – 

decided to retire. 

Rochdale people owe much to the initially 

homely and primitive but latterly luxurious 

coach services which Yelloway and Ellen 

Smith’s have provided. Generations have 

known the excursions across the country and 

with affection associated the town with their 

familiar livery.
