Celebrating Einstein in San Francisco<br />

Professor Aron Troen: Offering Food for Thought<br />

Israel Neuroscience: New Paths to Knowledge<br />

“A Tribute to Albert Einstein, Celebrating 100 Years<br />

of Einstein and Hebrew University” was presented<br />

by <strong>AFHU</strong>’s Pacific Northwest region on May 1, 2018.<br />

The evening was graciously hosted by Israel’s Consul<br />

General to San Francisco, Mr. Shlomi Kofman, and his<br />

wife Sharon, at their private residence. The reception<br />

featured Professor Hanoch Gutfreund, the Andre<br />

Aisenstadt Chair in Theoretical Physics, and Director<br />

of the Albert Einstein Archives at Hebrew University.<br />

Professor Gutfreund offered guests a rare glimpse<br />

into the intimate details of Einstein’s personal and<br />

work life. Among the evening’s guests were several<br />

Hebrew University alumni, long-term <strong>AFHU</strong> supporters,<br />

as well as one of Professor Gutfreund’s former<br />

students who is now a Professor of Physics at the<br />

University of Kentucky.<br />

On July 16, 2018, the Pacific Northwest Region<br />

of <strong>AFHU</strong> and the Israel and World Jewry Committee<br />

co-hosted a reception at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette,<br />

California. Two hundred guests listened to featured<br />

speaker, Professor Aron Troen, Director of the Nutrition<br />

and Brain Health Laboratory at Hebrew University’s<br />

Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food<br />

and Environment, discuss “Food for Thought: Can<br />

What We Eat Prevent Alzheimer’s?” His presentation<br />

was introduced by Marlene Their, Chair of Israel and<br />

World Jewry.<br />

Internationally recognized neuroscientist Professor<br />

Adi Mizrahi, Director of the Hebrew University’s<br />

Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences,<br />

explored the mysteries of the brain in Palo Alto. One<br />

hundred and seventy guests gathered at the Oshman<br />

Family JCC on June 20, 2018 to learn about brain<br />

function and brain repair in the aftermath of injuries<br />

and neurodegenerative illnesses. Introduced by<br />

Eric Stein, President of <strong>AFHU</strong>’s Pacific Northwest<br />

Regional Board, Professor Mizrahi described changes<br />

in brain chemistry brought about by parenthood and<br />

shared a video depicting the transformative effect of<br />

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) on a patient previously<br />

unable to control body movement.<br />
