Mark Gordon
D. Walter Cohen
American Friends of the Hebrew University
(AFHU) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
are deeply saddened by the passing of
Mark R. Gordon. A leader in the financial services
industry and a prominent member of the Greater
New York Jewish community, Mark was admired
and respected for his incisive leadership, spirit of
compassion, and generosity. His commitment to
Israel was steadfast, and many were inspired by
his example.
A staunch advocate for the Hebrew University
and actively involved in AFHU’s mission, Mark served
on the National Board and Executive Committee
and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2009.
He chaired significant events in support of Hebrew
University and worked to help strengthen AFHU’s
fundraising capabilities, always displaying long-term
vision. Benefactors of Hebrew University, Mark and
his beloved wife Patricia provided scholarships,
supported faculty recruitment, and fostered achievement
at the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture,
Food, and Environment and the Lautenberg Center
for Cancer Research and Immunology.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Pat and to
the couple’s children: Bernard (Jennifer), Dora, and
Rebecca (Bud).
AFHU mourns the passing of D. Walter Cohen
DDS, a leader in the field of dental medicine and
a dedicated supporter of the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. An alumnus of the University of
Pennsylvania, D. Walter Cohen had a distinguished
35-year career at U. Penn, establishing the first
department of periodontics and becoming Dean
of the School of Dental Medicine. He also served
as Chancellor Emeritus of Drexel University College
of Medicine.
A humanitarian and advocate on behalf of Israel,
Dr. Cohen was honored by AFHU and the Hebrew
University in 2006, receiving the Etz Shalom, “Tree
of Peace,” Award. The D. Walter Cohen Middle East
Center for Dental Education was established at the
Hebrew University to foster dental education and
cooperation between Hebrew University and Al Quds
University in East Jerusalem and to develop local
programs in oral health and promote joint research
between Israeli researchers and colleagues from
neighboring countries. In honor of Dr. Cohen and
his wife Betty z”l, the D. Walter Cohen and Betty A.
Cohen Professor and Chair in Periodontal Research
was dedicated at the Hebrew University.
We extend our sympathies to his devoted partner
Claire Reichlin, to Dr. Cohen’s children, Jane E.
Millner (Martin), Amy Cohen, and Dr. Joanne Cohen
Katz (Dr. Aaron), and the entire family.
